Yesterday, a fellow named SoothingBell asked if they could translate Twilight the Useless to Chinese, and no way was I gonna say no. :D

    Idle musing

so-called because that's what led me to the realization

What is so compelling about the idea of "warrior woman runs afoul of a wizard and is flung centuries into the future" that I made it happen twice?

...And with slightly more musing, I also realize, in a roundabout way, it was with the same wizard. >_> Huh.

Fic recs, March 8th: Top Ten of 2023!

Fic recs, December 29th + State of the Reviewer 2014 · 6:02pm Dec 29th, 2014

Though I'm not saying I won't do a versus post before the end of the year, I find it very unlikely, given that I read precisely zero fanfics since last Tuesday and I kind of want to get some writing out by then. Consider this the last review journal of the year, then, and look after the reviews for stats and a discussion of where I am and where I plan to go!

Hey, remember that thing where I was like “We need an FoE-based Godwin’s Law for EQD”? Well, after some discussion, I have decided to name it Homage’s Law. So if you bring up Fallout as any kind of example of Equestria Daily fiction standards, you have Homaged, with a capital H, and that’s terrible. :(

DeftFunk did a “read and react” video for my fic Treehouse (and pointed out that the song I linked to was no longer available, so I fixed that). Spoilers, he didn’t like it much, but it’s always great getting stuff like this, if only to hear his melodious voice. :3

Zoop zoop! And a couple of trio pics.

Muffins by Jonathon Smythe
Genre: Slice of Lie
Time Turner makes muffins for Ditzy Doo. Have a new writeoff-based story collection! There’s not much to this piece, being from a minific contest and all. The muffins are well-timed because Ditzy had a bad day, but Turner made, well, “one little mistake”. (This is the second story I’ve read recently where this sort of thing came up.) The ending’s not terribly strong and overall it leans heavily on the “poor, pathetic Derpy” trope, but ffs, at least he’s not the Doctor; then I would have had to hate it.

Hearth Swarming Eve by horizon
Genre: Political Mystery
When changelings invade Ponyville on Hearth’s Warming Eve, it’s up to Twilight and friends to figure out what Queen Chrysalis’s real plan is. One of my favorite entries from the last writeoff. For all that this has comedic overtones, a la Changeling: The Movie, it becomes deadly serious by the end. This is helped along by the use of Rarity as the viewpoint character, something you don’t often get with a full-ensemble mane cast. She’s got a ton of diplomatic knowhow and spends her time trying to suss out the truth behind Chrysalis’s claims. I’ve always liked Rarity as the Face character, and seeing her machinations behind the scenes — “playing super-spy”, as AJ puts it — makes this a really thrilling read. It’s certainly a much different story than “Twilight negotiates with Chrysalis” would have been, and likely more interesting overall. If there’s anything weird about this story, it’s the identity of Scootaloo’s parents. <.< But this zips along merrily and provides an entertaining ride from start to finish. It’s even better since the author nearly doubled its length from the writeoff. Absolutely nothing in this story is what it seems, and watching all the pieces fall into place is fantastic.

Fluttershy’s Bad “Hare” Day by Pegasus Rescue Brigade
Reading (part 1) by Spyman342
Genre: Pet Adventure
After a misplaced wish turns Fluttershy’s world upside-down, she learns that there is far more to her animal friends’ lives than she ever thought. If you need a reason to read this, I’ll give you two words: bunny mafia. Yes, the secrets lives of animals in Ponyville are quite a bit more interesting than any of us might think, and PRB does a fine job crafting a sub-society for them to live in, to the point where Fluttershy being turned into a rabbit is actually plot-important, rather than just “because Angel”. The adventure is enthralling and the characters fun. There are a few problems with it, though, likely owing to its age. The narrative has a tendency to be very explainy: an early monologue about why ponies can’t understand animals makes for clever world-building, but dull reading. Not all the “main” pets are used well. Gummy feels shoehorned in until he shows up a second time. Opal is definitely shoehorned in, and during the final “mane pets adventure time go” sequence, has the least reason to help everyone out. Tank could be just about anyone, but him being in the role he’s given is lots of fun. Owlowicius is pretty much what you’d expect him to be, and comes with bonus Peewee because season two. Winona is definitely the best of them. And then there’s Angel. My attention was caught majorly by his speech, thanks to Spyman’s fantastic Italian mobster accent, but I didn’t always buy his character arc; it feels like he’s too easily swayed by Fluttershy, though there are many ways I can argue myself down from that stance. Fluttershy occasionally feels dumb (though this is lampshaded somewhat, and usually again, I could usually argue myself down from shouting "IDIOT BALL" given context). There’s also an issue with conveniences helping out the characters during tense sections. But I can forgive a lot because of a scene in the middle of the story, where a dark event is played for legitimate laughs. I don't mean dark comedy, but literally, “Oh, it’s not as bad as you think”. I was honestly floored. This is not the most amazing story I’ve ever read, but it’s pretty solid, and if you can deal with some narrative issues, it’s a lot of fun. Definitely high on the scale of transformation fics, at the very least.

Chrysalis Works at Quills and Sofas by Syeekoh
Genre: Comedy
...And Twilight Sparkle just can’t believe it. This is a really dumb kind of crackfic, with an almost Pythonesque approach to its comedy, though that may be overselling it. It’s a ridiculous setup without a real punchline, is what I’m saying. I found myself laughing quite a bit while reading. I dunno, there’s not much to be said: if you’ve found Pony Does X crackfics to be amusing in the past, this one might also amuse you.

MechaCelestia Versus Giga Fluffle Puff by Soge
Genre: Kaiju Battle
This is from an older writeoff, and you’re damn right I begged the author to publish it during Project Writeoff. Look at that title! How can you not want to read this? This story makes no apologies for its ridiculous setup, not bothering to justify tossing a giant robot Celestia and Fluffle Puff into the scene. If that sounds like the perfect reason to have the title monsters duke it out, then this is the story for you. Also, Fluffle Puff is singularly amazing. The author originally gave her the ability to communicate telepathically, sans “speech impediment”, and was roundly criticized for doing so; the way in which he’s modified that for the story's publication is astoundingly hilarious. This is a duel for ages, and I love just everything about it.

Kiss by Wire by Bachiavellian
Reading by VisualPony
Genre: Light Romance
Ditzy Doo deals with Ponyville’s first telephone, a phone that wasn’t supposed to ring. Another from an older writeoff, a minific that I rather liked. I was rather surprised that I liked it, given that it’s a Ditzy/Time Turner fic, and easiest described as “adorable”, but there’s a certain earnestness in the writing that won me over. That, and the “phone should not ring” setup is pretty interesting, even if one could be forgiven thinking it was somewhat separate from the “secret admirer” plot. Still, this is another case of “cute fic I actually like”, and that says a lot.

Another keeper! He’s got good volume and presence. I like his intro music, and he also interestingly tells you when the story was originally posted. When this was featured, I passed it on by; after reading, I find myself wondering why. It’s the story of Hearth’s Warming, saved by a filly. The fic overall is incredibly silly. I was laughing so hard that I just didn’t care if the rhyme was imperfect or metrics impaired. Experience this and I know you’ll agree this story’s absurd as absurd can be. All righty then! Here's where I've been:

I've reviewed 1061 stories in 2014, my first full year of reviewing, bringing my total to 1639 reviews. My scores given for general reviews are as follows:

H: 113
R: 227
C: 311
V: 150
N: 237
I: 2

I did versus reviews of 21 single fics, scoring them thusly:

5: 5
4.5: 3
4: 3
3.5: 1
3: 3
2.5: 1
2: 2
1.5: 2
0: 1

I reviewed more fics by Pascoite than anyone else, 17 in total. I reviewed 70 fanfic readers.

I also received my first demands to drop reviews. Let it be known, I will do this if asked politely. If asked to drop a review, I will delete the text of the review and its rating from the blog post, leaving behind only the title and author. I will also change the rating on my spreadsheet to X. I will not remove evidence that I reviewed the story, because that would fuck up my statistics. There is, however, no point in asking me to remove a review, because even if you get to me within the first few hours of me posting the journal (i.e., before the bulk of people see the review), everyone now knows to treat X's as N's.

So, where I am now.

2014 was a great year for me. I think my reviews have made a bit of a splash in the fandom, and I'm glad people enjoy them. :) I've gotten over the fact that I can expect at best half the views on any non-review journal (RCL features notwithstanding, as those are broadcast to a vastly different crowd), and that just means more front-loading with news and Sonata pictures. :V Deal with it!

I've lately felt like my standards have slipped a bit. Honestly, because of those two takedown requests, I've been shaken a little, feeling like all eyes are on me, and thus it's become harder for me not to recommend a fic. This means more C's and V's, and a lot more "well, they tried". I do kind of feel like I have some standards, and people who read my reviews come for them. Will this be a problem? I dunno. Maybe I'll get over it eventually.

The format of my reviews has also changed organically over the past couple months, somehow. I've been doing a lot of spelling out the recommendation in the last line, which I honestly don't like doing, so I'm trying to rein that in.

Now to where I plan on going.

Going off the last note above, I'm going to make one large but ultimately minor change in the review format. I'll be putting the summary on its own line before I start the review. Of course, with "Pony Does X" titles, I tend to skip those, but still, this will allow me to use more than one sentence to sum up a story (because sometimes that's the best way to sell one) without bumping into the text of the actual review. I don't think I'll use a "Summary" heading like I do with "Genre", so just expect single breaks from now on.

The other change you can expect to see is the "Edited by Me" tag, up in the bolded section with all the "Mature: X" and "Sequel to" and the occasional "Password:". This tag will mean that not only did I edit the story, but that I was paid to do so (I plan to codify my editing commission rates soonish). I just want things to be clear and not have a conflict of interest and also point out that I'm not being paid to review the story, just that I do that. If I edit stuff for fun or friends, then I'll just make a note of it after the summary like I always have.

Lastly, an idea I want some feedback on: would you be interested in knowing what stories I'm going to review in the journal header? I instituted the Read More break this year, and I worry that people maybe see a dearth of H's and R's and pass a given journal by. But if I said, for instance, "Come visit bunnyland with Pegasus Rescue Brigade, explore Hearth's Warming Even with horizon and Follow Focus, and enjoy the wacky antics of Syeekoh and Soge", to highlight the stories that I think are really worth reading, would that draw more interest? Would it be a waste of time?

Beyond that, I think things are gonna stay pretty much the same, though I'll try and work on bringing those standards back up. Honestly, my criteria for rating stories has always been "do I like it?" but I try and take other's views into account when giving the final rating. I think of people like Bad Horse and Titanium Dragon, Jake the Army Guy when it comes to shipping, and kits when it comes to darkfics. If I think I've got something they might actually enjoy despite their own hangups, I'll move it up in the ranks; otherwise, it's a big conditional. This is why I barely ever rate shipfics "Recommended", fyi. But yeah, there you go.

Of course, none of you care about that! You wanna know what I've got slated for review, right? :D Here's some highlights of what I have planned, in no particular order:

- vs. post of Antipodes (still), Equestria from Dust, Contraptionology!, and my first foray into the Lunaverse
- follower gets: The Last Human and Five Score Divided by Four
- lots more wacky shit I actually want to read (I now have a "read it now" list in my notes file, and I think this is why I've had a lot more to recommend lately)
- a massive 50-fic review project I'm slowly trangling through
- more writeoff entries and minific compilations
- let's not forget that Skywriter edition! I will probably do one or two other authors as well
- four more installments of Project Get!
- and oh yeah, how about finishing up that "Old Favorites" group project? That means White Box, and after that, well...

Jake the Army Guy when it comes to shipping

What's it gonna take, PP? What more do I need to do? :(

One thing I've personally considered doing, and may or may not implement, is simply removing my "recommendation" line for stories which I don't recommend, so only things which are listed as being recommended in some capacity have an actual thing next to them. I'm not sure if this is a good idea or not, but it may take some of the sting out of a story being not recommended, even though you are, by not listing a recommendation, not recommending it.

On the other hand, it might confuse some folks. I dunno. When I'm looking at stuff, I'm looking for recommendations, but other folks might simply assume that because I reviewed it and talked about it that I thought it was worth reading, which isn't necessarily the case.

Of course, I've also been considering making little ribbon-type things which basically say "worth reading", "recommended", or "highly recommended" with my avatar lying over it, and those may be more eye-catching. Dunno if I actually have the wherewithal to produce such, though.

No one who wrote a story I reviewed has actually complained to my face about not recommending a story (unless I'm forgetting someone), though Steel Resolve told me that one person did react very poorly to my review of their story. I tried contacting the person in question, though, and they never wrote me back (though SR said that they'd blocked me on everything, so that's probably why).

Incidentally, I put all of the titles of the stories I review in my post titles, but I'm not sure if that actually helps the readers or not; it sure helps me find where I reviewed something, though.

People cite FoE as an example of EQD standards? Funny, I would use Spiderses or Cupcakes if I was feeling particularly unkind.

Honestly though, EQD does some good, largely unappreciated, work. Sure, some bad stories have slipped through the cracks (I am talking about things posted after the Grammar-Crunch of 2012 when technical proficiency began to trump whether a story was interesting.) But overall it's a repository of some of the best fiction that was proffered up for posting.

So If I mention Cupcakes have I sprinkled? If Spideres then Argembargered?

I super enjoyed Hearth Swarming Eve. I think I'll give Chrysalis Works at Quills and Sofas a look, won't take long.

Wow, a couple people asked you to take their story reviews down?

I'm looking forward to that Contraptionology review, and I'm really curious about which Lunaverse story you'll be taking on. Boast Busted, since it was the first? That's a 'verse I've been tangentially involved in for a while (just as a loudmouth reader, not an author), so it'll be interesting to see another outside take on it.

I think of people like Bad Horse and Titanium Dragon, Jake the Army Guy when it comes to shipping, and kits when it comes to darkfics.

... kits for darkfics? Have you never read anything by Razedrainbow?

And how can you not think Donnys Boy for shipping? I mean, c'mon, PP.

I kind of like not knowing what stories are going to pop up in each review post. Though you doing little blurbs at the beginning of each one could be fun.

2685867
What the...? People making takedown requests for reviews?

I... have a pretty low tolerance for that idea, myself. I mean, PP has reviewed what, 2.5 of my stories (I don't know if "Horizon and I get drunk and throw things at each other" really counts as a full story), and he totally panned one of the two he reviewed (and had a vested interest in the other one, since it was written for a prompt he generated :rainbowwild: ). So I'm not exactly getting set up as a paragon of fanfic-writing by PP's blogs. And you know what? I'm fine with that. I'd love it if he liked my stuff better, but hopefully his dislike can help me improve on some things—though he absolutely hated my most recent story, too!

I mean, I suppose I could ask him to stop reading my stories, since it seems like we have pretty different tastes, but I like to see what people think, and I don't particularly feel like reviewers ought to be beholden to the creators of the things they review. That seems stupid. Maybe I'm just missing something here, though.

Anyway, PP, feel free to hate on all my stories you want. It still gets my name out there.

I'm just... boggled by the idea that you're getting takedown requests from authors. I can't imagine actually complying with those things myself, not unless I was given a really fantastic reason for doing so. You're free to do what you want with them, but I find myself pretty bothered by the idea that anyone feels so entitled about their work that they'd make such a request. I'd really rather have you reading my stories and panning them than not reading them at all. And at this point, I pretty much expect you to pan them, based on past experience. So I really have no idea what these people are on about.

I reviewed 70 fanfic readers.

Is that 70 fanfic writers?

It is because some people get very angry over such things.

I actually realized just this morning that someone went through and downvoted every one of my stories yesterday, apparently. I suspect it was the same person who supposedly freaked out over their review, but I have no way of knowing for sure.

See, I was gonna mention you, and then I was like, "Wait, is it Csquared or is it someone else I'm thinking of?" I'm getting there! :V

2685867
That's an interesting idea. Honestly, your reviews should be able to convey what you thought about a story in the first place, and, at least I think, whether anyone else would be interested in it. I dunno, try it and see what happens?

2685890
Cupcakes is no longer on the blog and therefore irrelevant to standards discussions. Spiderses is godly and you shut your mouth.

2685909
Yeah, Boast Busted, I've got it lined up. It's not too long, so that's cool. I've just heard so much about that AU, I want to at least be able to approach it when other people are talking about it.

2685911
The point is those people don't like those genres. :B

2685943
Two out of a thousand isn't too bad, all things considered. :B I ain't mad. I did have someone ask me to either review something good of theirs (I'd not recommended like five in a row) or else stop reviewing their stories. That turned out well, surprisingly.

2685953
No, the people who do dramatic readings. :B

You can totally bring this up with a mod if you like. They might do something about it.
Worked for a few of my friends in the past, at least.

Also, PP, don't worry about peoples' opinions. If someone is getting that butthurt over a poor review, they shouldn't be writing. Not everyone is going to like any one person's work. I've had a few pretty well-exposed negative reviews; I'm sure you have too.
I don't think you should adhere to demands, anyway. That just reeks of entitlement. You certainly shouldn't let it shake you up, or feel like your standards are slipping. If anything, with the amount you read, it should be getting harder and harder to impress you.

2686013

I did have someone ask me to either review something good of theirs (I'd not recommended like five in a row) or else stop reviewing their stories. That turned out well, surprisingly.

I could ask you to review something good of mine, but almost all of my stuff is pretty decent anyway, and it's not my fault you have no taste in fanfiction and shouldn't be reviewing anyway you don't like it.

Here, go review this.

2686029
Yeah, someone else suggested that I send in a message too, and so I did. Ah well, we'll see what happens. *le shrug*

I'm actually doing another set of reviews right now, but both the stories so far have been worth reading.

2686047
Are you seriously suggesting I should review The Spiderses? :ajbemused:

2686068
*snort*
I-if you really want to... :rainbowlaugh:
Edit: I just realised I meant to reply to PP, but I :derpytongue2:ed

I'd like it if you started each post with a list of the stories being reviewed (that could make it a lot easier to look up old reviews quickly), but I'd rather avoid the "Come visit bunnyland with ..." kind of thing. It uses up time that could be better spent doing other stuff, and it's hard to come up with intros like that that don't end up sounding kinda dumb very quickly.

I don't think your standards are something you need to be worrying about; there are a bunch of awesome people following you, and they'll make sure to let you know if they see any problems. If you haven't gotten a lot of comments from them saying you need to fix your standards, they're probably fine.

That, and the “phone should not ring” setup is pretty interesting

My first thought when reading this line was the proverbial Red Telephone, for some reason. Except that doesn't make much sense, because it's actually a dragon instead of a telephone.

Regarding takedown requests...I don't have all the details, and thus will refrain from weighing in one way or another. I will say that you absolutely, indubitably, shouldn't let it bother you.

Have I thanked you recently for doing your reviews? My busy schedule doesn't leave me much time for reading, and trying to sift through the mountains of rough to find the rare fic that I would enjoy would be impossible. Were it not for your reviews I probably wouldn't bother reading fanfics at all. Thank you, PresentPerfect. You are a force for good in the fandom, and your beard is glorious to behold.

I'm gonna read em either way so see what other folks think. I read all your blogs just about tho:P

Oh man, bummer on the drop requests. I can understand — if not sympathize — with them; authors can get pretty attached to their work, and if your review doesn't match with what the author considers the point of their fic, a low rating can feel unfair. It's a lot classier to disagree with the review (or to touch base with you, like that one author did after five in a row) than to suppress it, though. I mean, the worst that a bad review will do (as long as you're not trainwreck-exploring) is to not drive any traffic to the story. Hell, I read all of your reviews and I couldn't even tell you who the author was that you NR'ed five times in a row, and if I read any good stories of theirs I wouldn't even make the connection unless you deliberately name-dropped.

Out of curiosity, have you received any "plz re-review my fic b/c I edited the shit out of it" requests?

Re the other stuff:

* Your Darth's Warming Eve review was amazing and I'll even forgive the lack of scansion. See what happens when you let yourself get into the spirit? I bet your poetry heart grew three sizes today. :pinkiehappy:

* What do you mean, summaries? You're doing Genre and Rating now, what will this Summary thing look like and why is it going at the top?

* I'm very meh on adding teasers to the journal header. But then, I click through to every review post regardless, so my opinion doesn't make much difference. The feedback you'll want is from the people whose behavior it would change.

have you received any "plz re-review my fic b/c I edited the shit out of it" requests?

Not as such. I do get "plz review muh fix" a lot, but usually just out of the blue. I am, however, totally actually really going to re-review a fic that I panned during a contest review, which the author has completely rewritten, to the point of being multiple chapters instead of a one-shot. I haven't forgotten about that, author, if you're reading this! ;_;

What do you mean, summaries? You're doing Genre and Rating now, what will this Summary thing look like and why is it going at the top?

Look at my reviews: unless the story is summarized by the title, I always give a one or two sentence summary at the start of each one. Sometimes I don't want to do that, however, so separating it out just a bit will give me some leeway to organize the review like I want.

The feedback you'll want is from the people whose behavior it would change.

I just realized that, by putting my SotR at the bottom of a review fic, I'm quite likely not going to get feedback from people who wouldn't read the reviews without blurbs. <.< I'm liking MSPiper's suggestion, however, so I may very well implement that instead.

It's just, y'know, pointless when the review was months ago.

...
Yes. Yes it is.

I reviewed more fics by Pascoite than anyone else, 17 in total.

That's because you're my sugar daddy (even though I'm older).

I'm glad. I am still way too proud of my Derpy line to care about anything anyway.

I've lately felt like my standards have slipped a bit. Honestly, because of those two takedown requests, I've been shaken a little, feeling like all eyes are on me, and thus it's become harder for me not to recommend a fic.

I don't know if I'd be so worried about that. I mean, I've gotten my share of bad reviews, including a "Not Recommended" from you (I'm pretty sure that's what you gave Twilight Eats a Peach, anyway), and I don't hold it against the reviewer. I see it like this:

So you didn't like it. Okay. Based on the thumbs down, you weren't the only one, right? And at least you put the effort into detailing what was wrong with it, rather than all those drive-by downvoters. I can learn and improve from a bad review (or just keep writing crackfics because why not?).

Heck, I had three reviewers pan a single fic. That's an accomplishment!

You should do a video review so we can watch your faith in humanity crumble in real time. :D

Oh geeze, yes! Do it

Unfortunately, I have no faith in humanity to begin with, so there is aught but the wailing and gnashing of teeth.

2687121 I would love to see a dragon of your caliber do that. :pinkiehappy:

Looking forward to your reaction to the Lunaverse. I'm wavering on the threshold of reading some of them, caught between not liking the sound of the concept and having read several positive reviews. Maybe you'll push me over the edge. :twilightoops:

You need to show that fic to the guy who made Fluffle Puff. :B

Unemployment which is going away soon spoilers

I like your reviews. So long as they stay, I don't really care how you present them, Present. YA SEE WHAT I DID THERE

I just happened to notice btw that while Hearth Swarming Eve was Highly Recommended, it doesn't seem to have made it into the "I'm Gonna Rec It!" group. Oversight, or are you not doing that any more?
