This game needs a proper remake. It's a good first game of a series , but when you play the other games, the problems become obvious.
Story
In a magical world, the Great Protoon has been stolen by Mister Dark and it's up our narcoleptic, limbless hero to save the day. And thats all the story we get. I mean it. There's not even a proper ending to the game. Then again, it's just an excuse plot.
Gameplay
You start out pretty pathetic, without even an attack(except for a scary face which only works on livedstones). then you learn to punch, then you learn to hang, then to grab, then to fly, then to run. But before you learn to hang, you must learn to punch. NOW PUNCH!! Now back to gameplay, the punch is very useful as it's like a boomerang, probably the best punch in series as it's the only one that does that. The heli-hair isn't as helpful as the later games as it only last for a few seconds compare to as long as you like. This may not sound too bad, but there are very nasty platforming parts and being able to slowing descend would be appreciated.
There are times where you do something different besides the platforming, like planting seeds to escape a flood or flying on a mosquito, but they are only used for one area, except for the super flying which is used three times.I must also comment on the bosses. These are some pretty good fights, some are straight forward others are extremely hard (I hate Space Mama).
But the biggest problem isn't the temporary heli-hair. It's not the hard difficulty. It's not that it use a life system, which be obsolete in the next game. It's that you have to get all the cages to get to the final level, and to get all the cages, you have to look all around the hard levels to find them and the unmarked spots that make some of them and other secrets appear. It may not seem bad, but it's a real pain in later levels as you may have to a lot of leaps of faith hoping that a cloud will appear and save you.
Presentation
The backgrounds and scenery look very nice (except for the badlands, which felt like a sky world most of the time). Picture City deserves a special mention for being one the most unique worlds in a game.the music is lovely and is one of my favorites, especially that one track when you reach the Band Lands.
verdict
While I do like this game, the difficulty and the need for 100% to get the "ending" is a big turn off. Only recommended for people who want a challenge.
7/10
I remember playing that game, i should probably search it on Psn and try to finish it.
