    On Sex in Romance

I don't think that sex scenes in romance are "necessary"; for many stories, depending on tone, mood, intention, etc, they would be extremely superfluous. I don't believe they should be described in lengthy, erotic detail in many stories, either, even though that is what some consider most "gratifying" about them.

How do you (the follower) feel about smut / clean stories

    Hey there,

I haven't posted anything for a million years, but that may change soon. Dunno. We'll see.

This blog post is entirely to gauge feedback on two types of stories that have not yet existed on this page. My stuff up until now has been a mixture of romance and sex, but I am curious about how you guys would feel about stories that are:

    1) all sex, pure smut, little/no buildup

    Quick Update

I don't expect many people are still checking in/asking "Where the heck has Idylia been?" but I figure it's good to say something every once in a while.

I'm still here, checking the site daily pretty much.
I'm still editing stuff for people. That's the majority of my interaction with the site as of late.
I have ideas for writing and now I believe I have the motivation for it as well.

"Where Have You Been?" and other nonsensical doodads and hootenanies

TL;DR and also a convenient organizational outline
    1. College
    2. Taking care of myself
    3. Being lazy
    4. Engaging socially with other human beings
If these reasons aren't sufficient (they're certainly not for me) add "is difficult" to the end of those and you might feel a little bit better about them, regardless of whether they are or not (see: my methods of coping).

    In order.

How do you (the follower) feel about smut / clean stories · 4:37am Nov 21st, 2014

2) romance but contain no sex

I can always create another profile to post these stories on, which I will share freely here if ever that happens, so your opinion will not end up changing what I write.

1) Absolutely no problem
2) For the love of god don't tag these stores with Mature & Sex if there isn't gonna be sex in it... This is what the Teen is for and if you want your story to have no visibility add Sex. This rant is not aimed at you, just something I occasionally notice on fimfiction :)

Multi accounts might be quite a bit of hassle too... so I wouldn't recommend it unless you have a good personal reason (pleasing your readers doesn't seem like a very good one).

I don't really care about having fewer followers or having fewer people reading my story, so if my followers would prefer this account be just my romance + sex stuff then I have no objection.

Honestly, the main reason I started following you was because your smut took its time building up a romance, and a story, then having the sex as an extension of those passions. It was all very character-driven.

I guess meaningless sex can be fun, but it's not particularly interesting. If you feel like writing some, by all means.

Yeah, I gotcha. I don't really know what I'll be writing, but I've had ideas for all three and it just comes down to whatever really resonates with me.

Huh... apparently I'm following you. I don't remember following you, but I do remember I admired your organization about things. Anyway, back to the subject:

I honestly only rarely read smut or mature stories, because the few I have read tended to basically be porn in writing format, complete with lack of causality. I did enjoy a few mature stories, and those where, like every other story I enjoyed, I could put myself in the characters shoes. With that, I can truly understand the heat between the characters, and vicariously enjoy their ecstasy. Without that... well, you might as well be sticking a vibrator into a fleshlight.

I could imagine smut that was done so well that, even though it starts in the middle of the sex scene, enough detail is shown, both in the characters reactions and in the setting, that I can understand the characters and why they're having sex long before the story ends. Alternatively, I could imagine a romance scene where, say, two people were getting married or proposing to each other, and their reactions or their kisses or cautious hope was described so well that I truly felt it as well. I'm honestly not sure if either one is better.

Judging by the descriptions of your other stories, what you're proposing hardly seems like a departure from your usual work, so I doubt you'll risk alienating your readers as long as you tag everything and give a good description. Also, a new account splits things up, which means your readers that miss any blog post that has a link to your other account would miss out on half of your updates, and the ones that watched your new account would miss out on the other half. If I was a reader of the other account, I'd feel like I missed out on participating with other followers on any updates when they were new.

In fact, even if you're doing something completely new, like writing a murder mystery novel with little or no romance or sex, I'd say you're fine to keep it on your main account as long as your readers know what the story is about. At worst, a few of your readers won't like the story and may skip it. At best, you'll get to reach out to both romance lovers and murder mystery lovers. And even if you slowly start focusing on the new genre because you like it, you'll still have both the people that like your new stuff, and some of the old people that found that they enjoyed your new stuff as well. That way, you're not forcing yourself to write things you don't like, and you've got readers that enjoy what you enjoy.

Heh. My comment is longer than the blog post I'm responding to! :twilightsheepish:

Don't bother with alt accounts, it's more of a hassle than it's worth.

And frankly I'll read anything from you anyway, so yeah, write whatever you feel the drive for.

Write what you love first, and followers will filter in and out depending on what they love. If you really want to write smut, go for it! If you can't get enough of romance with dignity, go for it! Worrying about what your readers may think does you much credit, but ultimately this is about you. Passion compensates for a great many things, so write what you burn for and don't stop until you die.

Romance and sex... With or without sex, romance stories work well. I'll read most anything if it's written well. I'll even choke through some poorly written stuff ifor the story is really good.

I like mature fics the best. They're not afraid to show what happens behind bedroom doors, and I'm of the personal belief that you can learn a lot about a character and how they interact with partners in private. But smut for smut's sake... eh. It has its place for one-shots, and they can be fun to read, but I really love sex stories with a thought put into them.

I suppose if you're still thinking about writing things then there's no reason to not just do what you feel works at the time...

Worst case scenario, you can just change the tags mid-story if you feel that adding/going without sex isn't working for the direction you're going...

Honestly, the only story of yours I have read is The Ones Forgotten, and while it was a well constructed story regardless, I found that it felt stronger with the mature scenes in, mainly because that's what the story revolved around...
I'm not entirely certain where the line is drawn between teen and mature, but, say, for example: If TOF was only rated Teen, the most you'd likely get away with is the scene between Twi/Spike on the hill with the telescope... But even then, that'd probably be the uppermost limit of what is passable...

Would the ending of the story have anywhere near the same impact?
Well, that's up for debate too...
There's no reason to say that it couldn't be as emotional, but the whole scene where Spike spills his guts to Rarity would have to be butchered beyond repair and certainly wouldn't flow as easily as if you had free reign to write what you want...

I suppose I should sum this up:
TL;DR: Try starting it without the intention of sex being involved unless you feel certain scenes couldn't survive without it...
Worst case, add an Author's Note at the start of the chapter where the story rating changes to make sure readers wanting to avoid sex scenes don't get dumped with stuff they don't want to see...

Either way, I would love to read more from you and see how things have changed over what is almost two full years with your writing.

Ahh... thanks for your feedback!

Yeah, I'm still 100% on board the mantra that NSFW stuff can contribute to a story and bring character's emotions closer together unlike anything else, and I still really like it, but the smut question is like... I find It's really hard to come out of a writing slump by starting on a huge project, you know? You have to start with a small project that you know is manageable and want to do. So smut would kind of be that for me... something to get me back into the swing of writing so I can start on bigger stuff again, maybe.

After being away for quite some time, I can understand why you don't want to just dive into a ~50k+ word project not knowing how its going to run or if you're going to care about it at all...

If you ever want another pair of eyes to look over anything new or a different mind to bounce ideas off, I'd be more than happy to lend a hand...

I appreciate that! When I actually have things for people to look over, I will try to keep that in mind. Thanks!
