Should we no longer preach 'Love and Tolerate'? · 11:37pm Oct 6th, 2014
We're an imperfect fandom, and we often fail to uphold our motto, but should we give up on it?
Admission of imperfection does not demand surrender of aspirations; a motto needs to exist because it is not yet true. Once it is, it turns redundant, forgotten, like saying the sky is blue.
Love and Tolerate is a standard, a horizon, a quest. We may not be the fandom that lives up to it, but I take pride in being one of the fandom that speaks up for it.
Our heroines themselves do not embody love and tolerance accomplished and perfected. They don't even perfectly uphold the very virtues their Elements are named after! What they do represent is love and tolerance becoming, through overcoming their many, many weaknesses, vices, and sins. This constant effort to mend and improve upon an imperfect nature is, I think, the heart of the show.
There's nothing wrong with not living up to what you preach, so long as you're still making a sincere effort. As long as we try to overcome hate and prejudice, I think there's no reason to stop saying it: love, and tolerate.

We're the fandom that can sing Smile, Smile, Smile, and mean every word. Let's not sell ourselves short :)
EDIT: For those who say "the show never said that". True, not in so many words. But if you read between the lines, it's written in big red letters. The show is about characters accepting each other for who they are, their character strengths being also their character flaws. "The thing that annoys you the most about someone is also the reason you love them so much." In general, there's an embrace of diversity and an acceptance of what is different.
That it's never said outright doesn't mean it isn't right there.
'Love and Tolerate' was NEVER, EVER mentioned in the show. AT ALL.
I don't know where or how that popped up.
