    "State of the Frissy" Address!

Hey there everyone, I know it's been a while. I wanted to kind of touch base and lay out a few things that have been going on with me. I know it's been quite a while since I've updated a story, or even shown my face around here.

    In Loving Memory

On Monday, November 16, 2015, at 10:00 PM EST, after a short but valiant fight, my puppy Einstein lost his battle with cancer. He was six years old, born on September 11, 2009, and the love of my life.

I could use some feedback. · 10:27am Aug 22nd, 2014

Hi peeps! So I'm currently writing the next chapter of Adjacency (you may have noticed the shiny new progress bar I've added to my user page. It'sa naise. :pinkiehappy:). Whenever I sit down to start doing so after a long hiatus, I always reread the previous chapters to get my head back where it needs to be and re-familiarize myself with the story. I also make edits to those chapters whenever I spot errors and typos while I do this.

Well it recently occurred to me that there are a lot of points in a lot of chapters of Adjacency where I could have, or maybe even should have split the chapter into two or more chapters. Chapter 11, for example, could easily have split into two chapters—the first ending at Trixie's wail of fear, and the second chapter being everything after that.

Doing this might also make it easier for new readers to get into the story, giving people more points in the story to stop and take a break when needed, and tackle it in bite-sized chunks. And of course, it could potentially lessen the pressure on me as the author so that I don't feel obligated to put out chapters around 5,000 words in length every time. When I go long stretches without an update like this, I just feel even more obligated to give you a bigger chunk of story to read to make up for it. :fluttershysad:

Now, for all those pros the idea of going back and splitting the existing chapters into more, smaller ones, there are a few cons:

1. Doing this would be a time-consuming project in and of itself.
2. I'd have to come up with a bunch of new names for the added chapters
3. It wouldn't change how little time my college schedule is leaving me to write

The third point worries me the most. In theory, shorter chapter lengths means I'd be able to update more frequently, maybe even getting back to my 'once every 2 weeks' schedule. If I can't though, I'd be making everyone wait this long for short chapters instead of long ones. :fluttercry: I don't want to do that to you.

Anyways, please tell me what you think of all this. Make your opinions known! (Or just give me hugs of support!)

Well. I can only speak for myself, but I think that matters are fine as they are. 5k-sized chapters feel like a good fit; enough to have something to sit down with, but not so much it feels like a huge undertaking. I've been told by some readers that they prefer something to the tune of 8k - 12k per chapter, just so they can do some serious reading. A meal instead of a light snack, so to speak. Besides, I often have to reread a previous chapter or two just to bring myself up to speed when a new one is out, so having a little more is just fine.

As for taking time, I'm not in a hurry. College takes priority. As long as you're making some progress (and nice progress bar, btw) it's fine. I'd rather wait a little than have you burn out and ditch the whole thing. Besides, my writing pace is entirely based on how inspired I feel, so I have no right to throw stones.

So yeah. Don't feel that you have an obligation to feed your fans - us true ones have patience. It's better to stay true to your own needs and get good, quality stories out when they're due rather than force it.

"Can't force an apple tree ta grow faster than it wants, after all."
--Applejack, To Romance A Magician

My philosophy on writing is thus:

"It'll be done when it's done."

That has saved me much hardship and anguish. :ajsmug:

As the Beetle said to the Record-Man, "Let it be.". I tend to avoid reading updates 'till they give me about 10K worth of content, so I may be biased. As for the length... I waited almost 6 months for Fragments to update; Just take as much time as you need.

I haven't read it, so I only have one option.
