    Ciderfest's Scattered Pages Wrap-up!

Aside from contests and invitations to do things, I believe all of us here in Fimfic should get to hear about awesome things created by our community of writers.

It was not so long ago that Vivid Syntax reached out to me about a project he was working on. I admit, he wasn't the first to ask (that dubious honor goes to Nyronus) for me to work with them on it, but this time it was a request to reach out to all of you to see if you wanted to participate in something new and daring.

Ponyville Ciderfest: Last Call for Writers, Editors, and Actors

Ponyville Ciderfest: Last Call for Writers, Editors, and Actors

The words are flowing at Ponyville Ciderfest! This year’s convention theme is all about writing, and we’re celebrating with a ton of amazing events, including an interactive storytelling experience!

We’ve already got over sixty active creators and one-hundred stories as part of this project. We’d love to include everyone, but since we need to start finalizing so we can move onto the next stage:

The last day to sign up is Sunday, July 9th.

How does it work? Our writers are helping in three main ways:

    1. Hidden throughout the convention, we’ll have secret code words that can be entered into the PCVF companion app. When an attendee enters a code word, they’ll be presented with a short story (written by the writing team!) and get to make a choice that impacts the events at the con.

Twilight's Book Nook at Everfree Northwest!

D This Is Not A Contest Blog, What Is Happening!?

In 2019 Aquaman organized a bookstore booth at Bronycon. It was such a huge success and gathered so much attention that several of us, including: Capn_Chryssalid, PaulAsaran, yours truly, Monochromatic, Corejo and many others spent a considerable amount of the convention coordinating with security, selling books, engaging people and generally having a great time.

The best thing? The bookstore was incredibly successful. We had a line of people that we had to split into parts and arrange along the wall because of the interest people had in our stories.

    Everfree NW Scribblefest 2017!

Everfree Northwest, Seattle's premier pony convention is known for having one of—if not the—strongest writing tracks in the MLP fandom. As part of that, we run an online writing contest (now called "Scribblefest") every year. Entry is open to everyone, whether or not you attend the convention.

Like last year, we’re giving out six special awards, each of which comes with a $20 Amazon gift code!

This year’s prompt is: Growing up wild and forever free

    Awards

    The Jaw-Dropper Award ("The Dash")

We all know the type, the stories that make us go "Holy cow, THAT just happened!" This would go to the story with the best twist, surprise, or simple moment of hoof-pumping awesomeness!

    The D'aww Award ("The Fluttershy")

A staple of ponyfic... the story with the sweetest, most touching moment that makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

The Nasally Ejected Beverage Award ("The Pinkie")

Conventions » Weird Al has a message for Fimfiction, Galacon & BUCK · 9:48am Jul 16th, 2014

To save spamming more site posts I thought I'd wrap these up together.

Using my amazing last minute planning skills (because I'm an idiot and should have decided on this ages ago) I'll be going to Galacon this year. So, say hi if you see me or something. I'll most likely be wearing my fimfic shirt as usual.

Also I'll be doing BUCK again this year in Manchester, and I'll be hosting a panel with Blueshift so make sure you come along if you can and say hi

You know, I never would have thought that you would post this as a site post. But holy hell am I happy you did.

Man I've seen this video like five times today.

saw this in an earlier blog post
Mandatory Fun or no fun at all

Nothing on double negatives? For shame Cheesy!

2290563
this new disease called "fun" is spreading and now the people of fimfiction
are infected

Meh... you should have decided on Bronycon in Baltimore :rainbowwild:

That song is cheesy as hell.

Im afraid I am going to have to go with the feelings of one of the greatest modern users of the english language. One Stephen Fry

I may not be a fan of Weird Al usually, but I gotta give him props for this one.

Will see you there! Can't say I'm not nervous about this panel or anything... *panics*

I hate these things I can't go

...But I like the Oxford comma.

This was funny and very informative. Some people need to relearn English again.

2290574
In my opinion? Just like in the visual arts, one ought to learn the rules before you start faffing about with them in artistically incorrect ways. So, in a way, I think that Stephen Fry and Weird Al are both right.

I am loving this song a bit too much for my own good.

Gem

Which panel are you hosting?

2290622 Blueshift vs Knighty rap battle

That's why I try to type and write in proper grammar.

2290574
Points to consider in that for you, who takes his side.
"I think what annoys employers when confronted with informal, unpunctuated, and haywire language is the implication of not caring."

"You slip into a suit for an interview and you dress your language up, too."

"You can wear what you want linguistically or sartorially when you're at home with your friends, but most people accept the need to smarten up under some circumstances. It's only considerate."

2290606 I hate it! :fluttercry: I can never figure out when it's ok to use. It really depends on who/whom/etc. is supposed to be reading whatever it is you're sending them. Some people like it, some don't, AND THAT IRRITATES ME!

I found the video you linked to be very hilarious.

Hey, that's me! :pinkiehappy: I'm also going to BUCKcon.

And yet the title of the post is ambiguous because of punctuation. It is likely that Weird Al does not have a message for Fimfiction and Galacon and BUCK. I think you mean, "Weird Al has a message for Fimfiction; Galacon and BUCK."

I think it was George Orwell who's Five Rules for Effective Writing that taught me what to leave out and where to draw the line re. required grammar and clarity of communication.
When something has to be read twice to make sense then it's time to ask for a proof reader or try and work the meaning into the surrounding text, and if you don't know how to say something clearly it's perfectly alright to ask for some experienced help despite what years of closed-book tests have taught children.
For the rest of my personal opinions on education see my blog then claw your eyes out.
A.G.

WORDS CONFUSE ME!

He knows...

I'm going to be at Buck!

2290651
awww she so adora-

time to practice medicine
....OH GOD:applejackconfused:

I've seen people on other writing sites who need this advice

For a moment there, before I started the video, I thought he was gonna comment on all the Cheese Sandwich fabrics.:pinkiehappy:

I hope I'm not the only one, but did anyone else notice that, at the 30 second mark on the video, it shows a website user whose name is George Newman?

You know who really needs to take that song's message to heart (and maybe a few refresher courses in English while they're at it)? Some of the pre-readers and story approvers here on this site. :twilightangry2: The rule about "stories without a basic level of grammar will be failed" seems to be honoured in the breach more than it's actually upheld... :facehoof:

Was the 302nd person to watch it

Had to:

2290778
I don't agree. The use of a comma in the title is fine, although the Oxford comma would be permissible too; "a message for Fimfiction, Galacon, & BUCK".

2290619
I agree. It's akin to the other rules in the writing guide; you will find good writers aplenty that break them, but when they do so, they know fully well that they are breaking a rule and why it helps them achieve the effect they want.

2290574 Woo, go Stephen Fry. Not that I disagree with Weird Al here, but without a balance of these point of views... what's the real fun in writing anymore? Your going to have to look for every different nitpick for the English language to get it correct, and the English language is confusing enough as it is. Much simpler at the other languages.. with all these rules in the English language, people can't expect us to remember all of them (plus, more and more children aren't learning almost no rules except in top prodigy schools). We have to have a decent amount of understanding of the language, and doesn't mean we shouldn't look out for mistakes. (Plus, those texts that replace you with u are ridiculous. Can you not spell out three simple letters?) Just... a balance.

But then again, lots of people use editors on here who know language rules on here without really looking over their story, so ignore me.

Nice! It's been a while since Al made his own song which is not a parody. Or is this song a parody? If it is, I have no idea which song that is.

The message is right and I have no complain about it. However, I think what most of FiMfiction's "grammar guardians" missing are two facts: a lot of people (a specially in pony international community) are not english native speakers and many actual english speakers view grammar mistakes as an excuse to go full douchebag mod. Those meanies hurting english more that any other. They discourge people to practice their writing and promote drama like trolls.

Im not agains correcting people's grammar. Nonetheless, Im against the mean approach to those who need guadience. Im make tones of grammar slips every day and I need help, not a gestapo with a whip.

Now you may correct my grammar.

2290944 it's a parody. I listened to it last night. He's parodying Robin Thicke "Blurred Lines"

Just learned learned more than ten years of English could teach me.
Thanks. Now I know I wasted my time.

It's like this video was made directly in response to all the spelling & grammar errors that keep popping up in media nowadays.

What is this world coming to? :raritydespair:

Oh fuck yes! Weird Al's a bos boss. :D

Also, here's his newest parody in case you missed it:

I'd like to hope I write better than that.:pinkiesad2:

But all the same, thanks knighty for introducing me to the awesomeness of Weird Al's music!
