User copies HP Lovecraft story nearly word for word, gets called out · 5:40pm Jul 8th, 2014

The Lord of the Night, self-proclaimed servant of Cthulhu, submitted this story yesterday.

His language implies that this is an original story, with "moments where I will insert actual paragraphs from the story." A close reading determines otherwise.

Users call him out very quickly

While others wonder how blatant plagiarism got past moderation

Meanwhile, LoN goes on the defensive, justifying his actions with "I just can't make things out of thin air."

(thanks to Setheroth for the lead)

EDIT: The story has been deleted. HERE is a back up of the story heading for your perusal. And HERE is a shot of the story itself.

EDIT 2: The Lord of the Night has apologized

What a moron.

:rainbowhuh:

Love your account.

Confess to your crimes, stale end piece of white bread, don't avoid them.

Wow. Just...wow.

I love his little "in-character" roleplaying blog flavor.
Makes it so much easier to laugh at.

2266954 Indeed.
2266958 It's been unpublished and may be on deletion soon.
2266960 Ikr? :rainbowlaugh:

He at least could have cited his works.

As soon as I saw Parasprites blog about this, I had a feeling it would show up here.

This is fucking hilarious.

How did this slip past moderation? Are those guys just not that familiar with H.P. Lovecraft's work?

What an idiot!
Anyone could just select a random story and just change the name of the characters, that's just dumb.
Though his roleplaying is hilarious. :rainbowlaugh:

Pardon my parlance but...

What... in the name of Celestia's golden flank was he thinking? Obviously the only TRUE goddess here is Celestia, heavenly queen of the sun, Solar Invictus, She Who Is Too Bright To Be Glanced At By Mortal Eyes.

:trollestia:

On a more serious note... seriously, how did this get past moderation?

2267026 "Are those guys just not that familiar with H.P. Lovecraft's work?"
Most likely. Lovecraft isn't exactly super famous.(But totally should be.)

2267026
That's probably what happened. I'm not familiar with H.P. Lovecraft's work. If I were a moderator probably I would have not noticed it.

Yeah, the absolute moment that it was mentioned "actual paragraphs from the story" was mentioned, the story should have been rejected as even a few paragraphs would be enough to qualify as plagiarism. But reposting the entire thing with only a few words replaced then passing it off as even "mostly original" is total bullshit and the very idea of justifying that while basically saying he's going to be doing more direct thefts of HP's works should warrant a ban. Because otherwise, he's dancing in the face of one of the most basic rules on the site and lack of action by the mods (which is becoming disturbingly much more scarce in light of where the site's been going in recent months) will only encourage more things like this and open ignorance of the rules.

I think the bottom line, though, is that we simply need more pre-readers as things like this keep falling through more and more and it would be unfair to require the current pre-readers from working harder for an already thankless job. The approval process is where FimFic's standard of quality begins and ends, and right now that standard is slipping. Hell, make it a longer time period for stories to get approved, as while it's nice for a quick turn around, there's no reason a story needs to be posted ASAP and even if it takes a week or two at most, the rise in new submission quality should help restore confidence in the system.

That sounds like me when I was so very annoyed about my first ever fic was utterly destroyed by some people I know. We are fanfic writers, coming up with shit out of nowhere is our thing!

He's pretty famous, but more by reputation. I've heard of him but never read any of his work, which is pretty common with famous writers. I never would have read Hemingway, Flannery O'Connor, or Shakespeare either if I had any choice in the matter.

Let's play a game called "Is the story moderator drunk?"

The answer is yes.
At least I hope so.

Also:

I just can't make things out of thin air.

Man, I needed that laugh today.

I'm calling bullshit on that apology. He knew EXACTLY what he was doing.

Has he been banned yet?

So he practically forged a story! I can understand making a parody of a story, but you have to give credit where credit is do. And saying sorry doesn't help ether. :ajbemused:

2267279
He didn't practically forged a story, he did steal one however:pinkiesmile:

2267342
oh. Thank you for correcting me on that. :twilightblush:

To be fair, he did write,

He needs more cultists and I believe the best way to do that is make more FAN FICTIONS.

which is clearly one of the greatest lines of written English in the history of the language.

>tfw u have an angry Cthulu 2 please

I started reading it, then just went 'Hooooold on a second....' and checked my copy of it.

:twilightsmile::pinkiehappy:Thanks for the shout out

2267026 Apparently some of us aren't. Shocking, truly.

And as such, his soul was fed to the mighty lord Cthulhu, and he shall suffer for all of eternity, in the madness of his almighty Lord.

Praise be to Cthulhu, Celestia and knighty.

2267702 FOOL, DON'T YOU KNOW YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO MAKE MISTAKES! YOU MUST BE PERFECT AND CATCH EVERY SINGLE COPIER, TROLL, ECT. ON THE SITE! AND IN ORDER TO DO SO YOU MUST READ EVERY SINGLE NOVEL ON THE PLANET OT PREVENT PLAGIARISM.

SHAPE UP OR GTFO!

I've only heard of HP Lovecraft a few times, but this is hilarious. Like other people, I'm wondering how this got past moderation. But what was he thinking, didn't he know that he could easily get banned for that, even if the story somehow got submitted? Juiciest drama I've seen here, though.
