Forgive me, for I am sleepy

Next chapter of Rendezvous is all written. Will edit and publish it tomorrow. Wanted to publish it tonight, but that's not going to happen because it's super late and I have an early morning meeting at work tomorrow. I was already falling asleep at my desk yesterday, so I really should have gone to bed hours ago.

    Switcheroo Entries!

So I've finally started to make good on that promise to publish 50K words by year's end. Took my sweet time, too.

Oh boy, let's see how much I can overreach

Everybody knows that New Year's resolutions don't work. But hey, they can't hurt, right?

I'm going to do a dumb thing and make a promise on the internet. It is as follows: By the end of the year, I plan to double the wordcount I have published here on my Fimfic account. Rounding it up to a nice, even number gives us 50,000. No sweat, eh?

Hi new followers! + Old Coot retrospective

So, this is something I'd usually like to do on people's individual userpages, but I was afraid I'd miss someone. So have it all in one go:

Writing this mainly to organize my own thoughts about the future of my fanfiction endeavors, but anyone who's interested in what I do here (an endangered bunch, I'm sure) is welcome to take a look.

First off, this happened. That spike on the views per day graph makes me grin like a fool.

I almost feel like I've cheated somehow to get it there. For one thing, I've been ridiculously lucky in finding an editor. Blood Lord is an amazing guy; he worked for hours and hours despite his hell-sent schedule to get Shoots and Roots fixed up, polished, and shinier than a new quarter. Seriously, the dude's nearly Kryptonian with the way he handles workload. I'm pretty sure I've begun owing him gold bricks for his help. Thanks, man.

I also owe thanks to everyone who's faved, commented, and followed me. It's been a whole new experience seeing people enjoy a creative work of mine. I'm really glad that what I'm doing is well-received among at least most of who viewed it. So, thanks again, guys! I might put up some more detailed reflections on Shoots and Roots later when some time has passed, but for now I'm pleased with the way the story is.

As for what I'm planing on next, I've got a couple of concrete ideas sitting next to a slightly larger pile of smoke and wisps.

Obselescence's Most Dangerous Game Contest kinda kicked my rear into putting out something that I've been thinking about for a long time. In Memoriam is basically the accumulation of how I interpreted Celestia and Luna's childhood and origins from "Hearth's Warming Eve" up through season 3. A couple of plot points (mostly timing) were tweaked due to some details I've heard about "The Journal of the Two Sisters", but I haven't actually read the book or a summary of it, so I'm fairly certain that there's enough contradictions to catapult it far past the "head-cannon" line and straight into "non-cannon" territory.

Nevertheless, I've got a couple of plans for this version of the Princesses. I've already outlined a story that picks up straight off the heels of In Memoriam. I could actually start writing it tomorrow if I decide to, but there's an internal debate going on in my head about whether or not I should write it now, or wait until after I've put out a different idea that I've been throwing around for a longer time.

It's basically a full blown adventure story, complete with a bit of globe-trotting and generous amounts of world-building. It'd be set in the same world as In Memoriam and its sequel but with Twilight & Co. taking front and center. Technically, I've already set up everything it needs with In Memoriam, so writing it now wouldn't be too much of a stretch. Plus, this is something that I've wanted to do for quite a while. Unfortunately, I have absolutely no idea how to pace a multi-part adventure story, and I'd rather have it all written/outlined before I publish anything. In any case, it might be a while before the next time I put something out.

For stories more along the lines of Shoots and Roots, I've got two ideas, and they're both tangentially related to S&R. One is a comedic piece about Lyra, Bon Bon, and Colgate that takes off from the line in S&R about Lyra's sister. To be honest, I don't feel very confident about my ability to write humorously, and I've only got a bare-bones concept in mind at the moment. It'll definitely be a piece I decide to do after I've gotten more experience under my belt.

The other idea is a thing about Big Mac. I've always wanted to explore what's going on in that stoic son of a gun's head, and I've got a couple of ideas about a slice of life piece I could do. I think its no big secret who Roseluck is crushing on in S&R, so this might warrant a "Romance" tag. While I'm loving the idea of this to death, I don't have enough concrete ideas or plans to write an outline quite yet. In fact, this story is at about the same stage as Shoots and Roots was back last winter when I had a couple of inklings of writing a story about why exactly Carrot Top is cool with living with a mare who regularly empties her fridge. It was almost six months from there till completion (I have an incredibly slow writing process, it seems), so I wouldn't hold my breath for the Big Mac piece.

In the meantime, I've been thinking about participating in the flash-fic event that The Writeoff Association does every month to help me get a better grasp at how to plan and write stories. The only thing is, most of the people involved in these events happen to be well known ass-kickers in the world of pony-wordsmithing, so I'm more than a little intimidated by the thought of my graceless doodlings being compared to their Mona Lisa's. Well, we'll see how well that turns out.

And there you have it! I'm pretty sure this blog post just broke the site record for biggest ratio discrepancy between word count and expected number of views. Having said that, it does feel good to have all my plans laid out in front of me. Hopefully that'll motivate me to get at least some of it done.

Thanks for stopping by!

A sequel to In Memoriam? I'm excited. :D And don't let us scare you away from the writeoff, I hope you're in on it now!

Oooo, so that followup would be a Twilight & Co. adventure fic building off of In Memoriam? Sounds like it could be a lot of fun.

Oh, I probably wasn't very clear here. The "Follow Up" to In Memoriam is a direct sequel; it picks up literally the morning after. The adventure story with the Twilight & Friends will build off of both of these stories. Thanks for your interest!
