    Falling behind

I'm getting to the point where just keeping up is beyond my dwindling capacities. I'm not sure what's going on, but I suspect I'm not going to like it when I find out.

Anyway, I apologize for having been such a lousy correspondent this year.

    Having gone wandering off somewhere

Of late, I seem to have been overtaken by events: my health has taken a turn for the worst, I wrecked my car, and the guy they hired to help me out at work has moved away. (Another guy has drawn the short straw.) I'm still alive, but it's not something I much feel like bragging about.

A night at the beer garden

I mean, I'm not allowed beer anymore, at least not until I get off some of these damnable medications, but our little table had massive fun discussing Jenga, photography, classic and modern weaponry, beer (of course) -- and ponies. Apparently they'd read my stuff. Who knew?

Regular visitors will remember that I'd asked the estimable LeekFish to knock out a sketch for my, um, OC. I posted it here, and it was well received; our own Twifight Sparkill came up with an idea, and heck, there's no reason you shouldn't see it here, especially since she's revised it to give me a more, um, scholarly look. (The LeekFish original is still in the sidebar at

    Back in the Real World

I think I would rather spend two weeks in the Everfree, trying to avoid everything that can kill me, and in the Everfree I assume everything can kill me, than one more minute in a hospital room.

That said, their definition of "on the mend" doesn't quite coincide with mine.

Trepidation alert · 2:52am Jul 6th, 2014

Let's assume that everything on that fabled Official Map of Equestria was put there for a reason other than to fill up space. How worried should I be that something in Season Five will wholly undercut a scene set in Hollow Shades?

I wouldn't worry. I'll still enjoy it regardless of what canon says.

That's comforting. I have jumped through a few hoops to keep this tale more or less in sync -- right now, it's somewhere early in Season Four -- and I'll probably jump through several more, but I'm hoping I don't have to retcon the whole thing beyond recognition.

I didn't pay an overt amount of attention to what they said, but I don't believe there was anything in Somepony to Watch Over Me stating that this is or is not Hollow Shades. Based on the scenery and geography, I'd be inclined to say we've already seen it.

2261488 My feelings on canon is that you should be flexible with it. Yes, sticking to canon can be appealing but honestly, there are several fics I like better than canon. It shouldn't be something that restrains you I think. A question for you. Why do you feel staying to canon is so important?

I suspect there are dozens, maybe hundreds, of little hamlets scattered through the Equestrian countryside; we do know that there are Apple Family members in the area, though I've pretty much decided that they're not actually In Town, but off the southern edge, beyond the reach of the forest. (I was working on establishing that very point last night when I had a major site failure, taking down all five of my domains.)

It was established in the very first chapter of The Sparkle Chronicles: with minor differences, what happened on the show also happened in, um, Real Life. Of course, I've already breached that premise by allowing a human to be ponified, so perhaps I feel the need to keep the breakage down to a minimum. :twilightsheepish:

You still have to admit that that town does look strikingly similar to the little view of Hollow Shades we have on the map.

Then again, that town also looks strikingly similar to the town of Spectre.

So, maybe I'm just crazy. In fact, I'm fairly certain I am.

There's a lot to be said for attention to detail. And I'd say it, if I had any.
