Bat blot #1- Science discovers that vampires can't taste bitter things. · 4:30pm Jul 4th, 2014
Apparently a diet of blood isn't good for the taste buds. Centuries of a blood-based diet have lead vampire bats (and all vampires really) to lose their sense of taste. Bitter was the first to go, and now they're loosing their ability to taste sweet and unami flavors as well.
So all those pictures of bat ponies drinking milkshakes?
Lies! They can't taste a thing.
I thought it was bad enough for cats that they can't taste 'sweet'.
Poor bats, not having either bitter and savory too.
Maybe they're, like, salted sour-apple milkshakes or something?
Or maybe the bats are just playing along socially until they can strike for vulnerable pony necks.

Vampire bats still have the genes coding for bitter taste buds, they're just not active any more.
Hopefully one day our genetic engineering will become advanced enough to restore this ability. Until then we need all the bat awareness we can get.
I don't care if bats can't taste. Bat ponies drinking milkshakes is adorable!
What an interesting study.
the batpony pictured seems to only want to make bubbles in her milkshake, so she's not actually trying to taste or drink it
