Friendship is Card Games: Kenbucky Roller Derby #2 & #3

We return to the cutthroat world of G5 roller derby, where Sunny’s trying her darndest to prove she’s more than just a casual skater… and has assembled one of the most ragtag teams of misfits this side of the Mighty Ducks in the process. Let’s see how the story’s developed from there.

    Swan Song

No, not mine. The Barcast's. The last call is currently under way, and if you want to hear my part in the grand interview lightning round, you can tune in at 4:20 Eastern/1:20 Pacific (about an hour from this posting.)

Yes, 4:20 on 4/20. No, I do not partake. Sorry to disappoint. :derpytongue2:

    Pest List

Just something I whipped together for fun one day, set to a possibly recognizable tune, all intended in good fun. And hey, given that I derived my Fimfic handle from a misremembered detail of the Mikado, it's only appropriate. :derpytongue2:

Friendship is Card Games: d20 Pony, Ch. 9, Pt. 1

Goodness, it’s been almost two years since I last checked in on Trailblazer’s adventures. IDW putting out comics almost as quickly as I could review them will do that, especially given all of the G5 video media coming out concurrently.

    Conflicted Crossroads

I have an interesting dilemma with an upcoming story, and thus I turn to the Fimfic public (or that portion of it that sees these blogs) for its wisdom.

Friendship is Card Games: Boast Busters · 5:22pm Jun 8th, 2014

Sorry for the slight delay; I didn't have the time to prepare this batch ahead of time.

Seeing this episode again brought a lot of interesting information to light. For example, when Applejack was showing her lasso skills, where exactly was that apple tree? Also, Rarity speaks in the third pony immediately before the famous "It. Is. On." I'm not sure if she was subtly mocking Trixie, or if that's just a unicorn thing.

I'd also forgotten that Spike was the one who gave Snips and Snails the idea to bring an Ursa Major into town. Sure, they were the ones who decided to actually prove Trixie's greatness and power, but they'd never have thought of it on their own. Nice job baiting it, dragon.

Everypony in town saw Twilight vanquish the Ursa Minor (and anyone can vanquish one as long as it's blocking, :raritywink:) and thus they all know Snips and Snails were responsible for the Ursa. The consensus on Trixie was that she was just an insufferable loudmouth. I think a lot of people forgot that after the episode.

Now for cards:

(Also, I did not make either Ursa an enchantment creature. Equestria may have pegasi, griffins, and chimerae, but it isn't Theros.)

Zipped Lips W
Instant
Spells target player casts cost 3 more to cast this turn. Activated abilities that player activates cost 3 more to activate this turn.
Sometimes, it's hard to tell whether the spell or the idiom came first.

Shut the Door 1W
Instant
Remove target attacking or blocking creature from combat. (Any creatures that creature was blocking are still blocked.)
Twilight's studies of reconstruction magic proved far more useful than she'd first expected.

Rainbow Umbra U
Enchantment — Aura
Enchant creature
Enchanted creature gets +1/+1 and is all colors.
Totem armor (If enchanted creature would be destroyed, instead remove all damage from it and destroy this Aura.)

Tall Tale UU
Sorcery
Draw three cards. Put three cards from your hand on the bottom of your library in any order at the beginning of the next end step.
"Ponies can forget it's all an act, myself included."
—Trixie Lulamoon, traveling performer

"Come on, she had a lasso! She was practically begging me to hogtie her."
—Trixie Lulamoon, traveling performer

"That's actually quite impressive. Most unicorns can't even touch something intangible with their telekinesis, much less manipulate it."
—Twilight Sparkle, Bearer of Magic

"I can do anything better than you."
—Trixie Lulamoon, traveling performer

The Great and Powerful Trixie 3UU
Legendary Creature — Unicorn Wizard

X, T: Copy a card with converted mana cost X exiled with Trixie. You may cast the copy without paying its mana cost.
1/2

Peaceful Resolution 5UU
Instant
Put all attacking creatures and all blocking creatures on top of their owners' libraries.
Most pony combat magic is designed to do as little harm as possible, for a given definition of "harm."

Taunting Jolt R
Instant

"Pegasi hate this one. They can't stand other ponies doing tricks with clouds."
—Trixie Lulamoon, traveling performer

Dunderhorns RR

Whenever another Unicorn enters the battlefield, that Unicorn's controller untaps and gains control of Dunderhorns.
Unicorns tend towards greater than average mental acuity, but there are plenty of exceptions.

T: Add one mana of any color to your mana pool. Spend this mana only to activate an ability.
"The proper venue is essential to any good performance."
—Trixie Lulamoon, traveling performer

Enchantment
Each creature with the highest converted mana cost has hexproof.
"I don't do 'humble.'"
—Rainbow Dash, Bearer of Loyalty

Young ursae rarely watch their step. Full-grown ones don't bother.
5/5

Versatile Magic 2(ur)
Enchantment
(ur)(ur), Discard an instant or sorcery card: Return an instant or sorcery card at random from your graveyard to your hand.
A unicorn's magic is usually limited by her special talent. When that talent is magic, she knows no such limitations.

Ursa Major 4GU
Creature — Spirit Bear
Trample
Ursa Major enters the battlefield tapped and doesn't untap during your untap step.
Whenever a source you don't control deals damage to you, untap Ursa Major.
"Their tempers are as vast and dark as their true home. Provoke them not."
—Princess Luna

I'm surprised you aren't too busy drafting Conspiracy to post these. I would be, if I could.

As you know from my fic, I agree wholeheartedly on the Trixie thing. Yeah, she was rather nasty with some of her tricks, but the Ursa was Snips' and Snails' faults (with a dash of Spike's fault on the side). And all they get is moustaches and a couple hours community service? How are the moustaches even a punishment?!

Anyways, the cards. While I was transcribing them to MSE, I thought there was a wording error with Shut the Door, but it turns out I had misread it the first time.

I find the name "Rainbow Umbra" amusing because "umbra" means shadow, so it's a shadow made of rainbows. I know it's the theme of the totem armours, but it's still what popped into my head.

Ursa Minor seems a mite bit undercosted to me, even with the bounce-a-nonland thing. Maybe if it bounced two things?

That was part of why I wasn't able to do these in advance. :twilightsheepish:
Making the entire table wet themselves just by playing Fires of Yavimaya? Fun.
Revealing Double Stroke naming Brimstone Volley to kill a Jetting Glasskite? Fun.
8/8 double striking Lurking Automaton? Very fun.

2187636
Yeah, I knew Rainbow Umbra was kind of weird in that respect. Especially if one considers the last time there was a Rainbow of Darkness in My Little Pony...
Also, compare Ursa Minor and Nulltread Gargantuan.

And remember, Trixie is the most elite arcanist!

Hmm. Is Ursa Minor's similarity to Nulltread Gargantuan deliberate?
Love all of them, anyway.

Great and Powerful Trixie is great and powerful.

Also, you might want to append an "in any order" or "in a random order" to Awaken the Beast

2187788 I had a Conspiracy draft earlier today, and someone actually had Double Stroke naming Brimstone Volley. He also had Grenzo and Canal Dredger. Personally, I prefer my Custodi Soulbinders and Unhallowed Pact

2187788
Just noticed something while I was browsing someone else's trades: if your cards became a real thing, there's already a Song Enchantment out there: Vile Requiem.

Just thought I'd mention that.

2187898
I actually made Ursa Major first, then decided to make Ursa Minor exactly half the size for exactly half the converted mana cost. As such, I went to a similarly costed, similarly sized creature for inspiration and assurance that Wizards would let something like that happen.

2188062
Huh. Could've sworn "in any order" was implied, but Gatherer seems to indicate that it isn't. Thanks for the heads up. :twilightblush:
Also, those are some pretty devastating combos right there.

2188066
Silly Bardic. Where do you think I got the idea? :derpytongue2:

2187788
I'm already contemplating ways to make the set re-draftable. I think the best way would be to shuffle 24 packs worth of commons, uncommons, rares, and mythics and randomly sort them into 'packs', which are then drafted as normal. Some of those "when you draft this..." cards are just too confusing for Cube drafting purposes, though I may have some ideas for the guy that lets you take the whole pack.

Whoa whoa WHOA. "Outdo" is a gamebreaker. I haven't played Magic in over a decade, but I played in the old days when "Channel, Channel, Fork, Fireball" was still a thing. I'd propose adding "cast by another player" in there somewhere... at the very least.

2191314
Compare Wild Ricochet, Echo Mage, and Increasing Vengeance. And remember, you're going to need four mana on top of whatever you paid for the copied spell. Also, Channel is banned in most formats.

Rope Trick

Also a very useful spell in D&D. Especially since it creates a pocket dimension.
