    Mares vs Stallions

This blog is pure speculation on the differences between pony genders, male and female. Discusses sexuality, gender roles and identity, religion and two of the ponies portrayed in media.
It is my opinion on pony cultures, my views are separate unless stated. Wish I could tag this mature, the topics are a bit tough for anyone under 13 and there is mentions of sex.

Sexuality (same sex relationships)
General Idea
A question I've always wanted to ask is about pony sexuality. How do social norms change over time? There is a great difference is society between the roles and expectations of females and those of males. Ponies should be no different
'Special somepony' this term has always been a curiosity to me. It expresses an expectation that no-one would care what gender the special somepony is. Males might have a different culture altogether as I'll discuss below in gender identity. When exploring Cherilee's relationship on Valentine's Day equivalent it was from the perspective of three young fillies, who might not have the full view of Equestrian sexuality. Males are very important to every civilisation.
After Celestia rose to sole leadership over the land times would have been very dangerous. Considering how rapid change can spark dissent it would have been very important for stallions to act in properly. What would have been perfect behavior? They can't really show sexuality on my little pony show so I'm guessing it would have been inappropriate for a male to take a sexual relationship with a male instead of with a female. The opposite probably would have been encouraged since there are so few males and so many females.
Females
While it would have been appropriate for a female to take relations with another female: both to ease any sexual frustration and lower the call on males in a herd I believe it would have been very important for females to also be attracted to males. They would have been expected to mate with males at least occasionally to beget children. Children are so important to Equestrians, especially during a war torn era.
Luna and Celestia were equals before Nightmare Moon. When Nightmare Moon was defeated there would have been scrabbles for power. This resulted in the deaths of multiple creatures;ponies, gryphons, dragons.
Males
In the past males were used to fight more often then females. If the soldiers all died in battle and few males were left behind this would have caused many problems. What happened to the mares of the stallion who went off to war, but never came home again? They would never have children if they were unable to find another male. If the only male available was gay and wouldn't have sex with them that would have sparked resentment against the male population and result in the exploitation of sexual resources. As in rape. It was possible the males of Equestria were raped, if they refused to give into demands of the females.
Let's say there are roughly 5 mares for every stallion. Then war comes along. When war's in town everyone helps. Let's say three out of four stallions leave to fight/assist/peace keeping duty. That leaves one stallion for twenty mares and if that stallion is gay there will be an extraordinary amount of unsatisfied and frustrated mares. Especially if some of those are stallions too old, young, or disabled in some way.

It would have been folly to allow all the males to go to war without siring children. In an emergency all males would have been called for active duty. Celestia would have done her best to prevent any problems with mares but can only do so much personally. Thus it's possible she modified the laws so a certain number of children must be sired by soldiers who went off to war, to make sure there were plenty of children. A grim and unpleasant duty for a stallion who doesn't like women.

Once the settle and fuss had died down I reckon Celestia would have revoked the rules regarding males, or at least changed them so they weren't so binding. Perhaps demanding a man possess several 'wives' or partners that were female before taking a male lover, that way Equestria was satisfied both in the bedroom and with children. Either way the guards seem very loyal to the princesses so it is possible that special duties and privileges were available to males who enlisted in military organisations. Including the wonder bolts as they were a military according to one of the season 4 episodes, even though they're normally show ponies

tl:dr If there were too many females and not enough males, there would have been attempts by people to get what they wanted. Either sex, children or both. The laws regarding the rights and privileges of males would reflect this

Popular Portrayal
Trenderhoof is a critic that showcases different places around the world of Equestria and makes them accessible for the common mare or stallion. During this blog I'll call him a pop writer, unless I think of something better. Travel writer just doesn't give the right picture of popularizing things, which is what he does. He apparently by his very presence is able to turn something ordinary as Applejack apple farming and turn it into the next "pop sensation ". For the common mare I wonder if part of Trenderhoof's popularity comes from the fact that not only is he a pop writer, but a male pop writer. This could be very scandalous behavior which appeals to quite a few different people and is an attention seeking technique.
However I'm not sure where Hoity Toity fits in, as a fashion critic who labelled the Mane 6's designs as a travesty but changed his mind when he examined her original work. He seems popular enough and nothing is said about him being male, thus it's possible for the fashion and critiquing businesses to have male and females on staff.
Hoity Toity was called "the big wig fashion hotshot in Canterlot" and appeared in Suited for Success season 1.

Religion
I wonder what role religion plays in the show, it airs in different countries so it would be difficult to introduce different religions. I admit by this point I'm off show topic and merely expanding the world for my own shown literature. This blog relates to what I think of stories and their intended consequences.
Celestia the sun-goddess. I believe this would be a fairly common theme since throughout time there have been many which revered the sun. In the past there would have been cults for both her and Luna. Those who defend the sun goddess to the end, and would see the end of Equestria before the sun-goddess's fall and those who'd rather see eternal night then risk the wrath of the Night Bringer Luna. She's quite an awe inspiring princess and would easily have intimidated the ponies of that generation because of the "Traditional Royal Canterlot Voice".
The cults that worshiped her in modern day Equestria would mostly be of pegasi and unicorn that have kept tracked of the cults movement throughout time. It's easy for secrets to be passed down and twisted in the making like a game. I believe the unicorns and pegasi in particular would have wished for Luna as the Mare of Eternal Night since unicorns value magic in all its form (the forms of the night included) and the pegasi worshiped military night which she would have had in abundance.

Luna as the Bringer of Eternal Night. This would have tragic consequences, it was explained death would happen to all of Equestria (and by extension the world they're in) if this ever came to be. I'm just exploring possible means of worship for Luna that would fit both within the realms of sanity and far, far out.

Gender Roles and Identity
Here's a question, what is gender identity? It's not something often thought about except in basic terms. It's thinking of oneself as either male, female or something in between. Personally I see myself as something in between because I don't have a strong sense of gender identity. For me that's normal, for others it's hard to wrap their head around. This relates strongly with sexuality but will be discussed at a different time, I believe it a difficult subject.
Do ponies think of themselves as male, female or neither? Honestly I'm believing it changes greatly on the individual. Males would (in my opinion) have a great gender identity as females. This is because there is so few of them and they often take high risk, high reward jobs. Even for ponies their sense of camaraderie must be immense. I'm currently referring to the military guard and members of the wonder bolts but I believe there are other high risk professions, such as monster hunting.
Males would have a strong identity as males but females as the more common and dominant gender might never think of themselves in this way. Rarity is one example of a girl, Applejack another. Neither are ever commented on for being different ways as girls, so much as the cat-dog nature of their fights. So Equestrian females probably don't consider themselves anything special because to them it's normal to have little to no gender identity that they express. They'll still think of themselves as female, it just implies that being female is normal and they don't consider themselves special for this.
Since this is true, it means males won't often be exploited as a resource, sexual or otherwise.
