A Word In Your Ear, If I May? [Behind The Scenes of A Forbidden Doorway, Part One: Why Does It Take So Long?]

As you probably know, I'm Frostmourne, the writer of A Forbidden Doorway and the now dead Cogs & Needles. I got my name from the legendary sword of the Lich King in World of Warcraft, a Fantasy MMORPG with a few Steampunk influences. And this, this is the start of a series of blog posts in which I talk about how I come up with ideas and different parts of the story. There may be a couple

    Apologies

Sorry the next chapter isn't out yet, I've been on the job hunt some more, and that took up a bit of my time. There's also the fact that i had to get used to writing for Reagan. I'll have to get used to Shay and Jacob when their chapters happen as well, but I'm positive that I've figured out how to write for them as well as Reagan now. I'll try to keep you guys posted more often, again, sorry for

A Word In Your Ear, If I May? [Behind The Scenes of A Forbidden Doorway, Part One: Why Does It Take So Long?] · 7:59am Apr 28th, 2014

There may be a couple spoilers, but they won't be extremely huge, and how they are going to happen will be kept secret.

I recently put up a new piece to the description of the story, which I will use to talk about part of the first thing I'd like to address: Why it takes me so long to write.

"Also, just for reference, this is not purely a clopfic. I have this listed as Mature and Sex because adult themes like alcohol, cursing, mentions of sexual activity, and drugs are present, and sex will be written out later, not just referenced." Just not soon. Is something I would tack onto the end of that, just for here. Now, when I'm coming up with parts of the story, and writing chapters, I not only think of it in my mind, but I concentrate on the little bits as well. I want to give the characters background and lore, and make it seem like they are actually gaining affection towards their Love Interests, rather than just falling in love with them over the span of a week. That doesn't go just for the Four, by the way. I want to make sure that every character that is important will be interesting, and not flat, as I write them, that way what I put out will be of a good quality for you all. I'm sure you probably noticed in the latest Chapter the memory had of Rarity in the Rat Trap. Not only is that giving more history between AJ and Rarity, but that is also one word: Foreshadowing. I won't say any more on that front, don't want to tell you all too much. But that is an example of the work I'm putting in to the Equestria within A Forbidden Doorway.

Now, the other reason why it takes me so long, is well, I'm going through changing times in my life. After graduating High School, I relaxed for nearly two years, then I went to college. As my return post stated, all college did for me was drain my creativity and put me in a confinement of struggle, sadness, and paperwork. A quandary of loathing. Fuck that noise. I dropped out. And so then, I started looking for a job. I started my job recently, a month ago. I used to be quite the slacker, doing nothing a lot, Sloth sinning like a major asshole. And so, making the change to an upstanding working person is a little bit harder than it should be for me. I am hoping in the months to come to be able to find a balance between work and Idea Forming/Lore Creating/Writing that will let me churn out the Chapters faster, but currently, I have not found that balance yet, and I apologize.

Well, I think that's good enough for now. Feel free to ask questions in the comments below, and I will try to answer them in the next one of these I make, which will be mainly about how I write each chapter.

So long for now, my friends.
