The end is not the end

Well. The main MLP cartoon has ended for this generation. There's still at least one EQG special scheduled for November, and the comics will be continuing into Season 10 next year, so there's still official material coming (and that's not even counting G5). But for the main series, it's the end of the road.

At the same time, it's nowhere near finished for a lot of us.

    It's a Beta-reader's Life For Me

Back in 2016, I started working with Evilhumour on some of his Loop projects. Later that year, we started collaborating on non-Loop work, including what would become the first in a series - The Pieces Lie Where They Fell.

    The SharkMouse Lives

Exactly what it says in the title. I'm still alive, still watching and enjoying pony, still reading fiction, still writing outlines for my own works... and, earlier this year, I joined SpaceBattles and began contributing to the Infinite Loops, starting with MLP Time Loops and branching out from there. As of this writing,

Greetings. My name is Anon e Mouse Jr. And as of late 2013, I'm a brony, who was brought into the fandom by a combination of Equestria Girls ads on Youtube, reading pages (Ear Worm and Awesome Music) on TVTropes, and fanfiction. I stay because doggone it, they're cute and there's an actual story. And awesome music. I began watching the series in early January with "Pinkie Apple Pie", and have followed it ever since.

Personal notes: I am HIGHLY prone to obsessive, narrow areas of focus, and I can go on for HOURS about them in conversation if someone doesn't stop me. (Hence one of my mottoes: "I am otaku, hear me geek!") I spend WAY too much time surfing the net, reading fanfiction and researching whatever catches my fancy. When I'm not surfing the web, I spend a lot of time coming up with story outlines for various fandoms, which tend to be lengthy and detailed (it helps me avoid plot holes). I hope to one day get these ideas organized and corralled for eventual posting somewhere (if only to put them up for adoption). Unfortunately, turning outlines into regular stories is not my strong point. Usually though, I can at least usually plot out most of a story, if I'm not interrupted while doing so. In part because of my obsessive need to keep things in order, I don't post stories until I finish them (a very rare event), and I make sure to keep researching as I go so I can keep my facts straight. (That's part of the reason I take so long to get things done... the canon material keeps updating with new tidbits.)

When I'm not on the computer, I'm usually either in front of the TV, reading something from my personal library of fiction (which mostly consists of sci-fi and fantasy), or wandering down to the local bookstore to browse, and if I can, actually buy something. (I have a lengthy - and by lengthy, I mean over a thousand volumes long - want-list of books. It's so big I've had to break it into three very organized sub-lists. What can I say, my obsessive tendencies strike again.)

General notes on fanfiction: I have a special fondness for crossovers, both the stranger ones and the more commonly-done ones. (Which explains why I have so many on my favorites list on fanfiction.net, and on my "To write eventually" list.) When written well, they can be very interesting... as long as the author has done their research. I also like some Elseworlds-style stories (where the characters wind up in a completely different setting), if done right.

Pairing-wise, I'll read canon pairings, but I enjoy reading about unusual ones too, and will often search them out just for grins. (In regard to slash, I'll confess that I have a few fics with it on my own favorites list on fanfiction.net - usually because it snuck up on me. I tolerate it, but I don't go looking for it, and I WILL NOT write male/male pairings. Female/female is a whole other kettle of fish. What can I say, I'm a guy. Which is also why I like stories where the lead male winds up with multiple female partners, as long as they're aware of one another and he's not just cheating on his main wife/girlfriend/fiancee.)

There ARE a few things that'll turn me off though. First and foremost, too many spelling and grammatical errors (using the wrong word instead of one that sounds the same) bug me. Second, when the author starts killing off too many of my favorite characters, especially when it's for no apparent reason other than to make the story "darker"? That REALLY cheeses me off. Third and lastly, glaring errors that indicate the author is just ignoring the source material. (Though I'll forgive it if they wrote the chapter or story before the canon information was revealed. On the other hand, changing an established detail just because they feel like it, and not because the change is part of the plot, annoys me.)

MLP notes:

Favorite characters - Mane Six: Twilight and Pinkie Pie. I find I can relate best to them - Twilight and I are both socially awkward and obsessive over books and details, and Pinkie has effectively become morale officer for the entire town, while I find myself in that role for my family on a fairly regular basis, at least when my Grumpy Bear tendencies - another thing I share with Twilight - aren't taking over. Her goofy antics are always good for cheering me up. (Though season 4 has had a few scenes where she's been obnoxious. Those moments I don't care for.)

Other thoughts on the Mane Six: If I put them in order of "who I like most", Rarity would be at the bottom. I don't have anything against her, I just can't relate to her as well as I do some of the others. (About the only thing we have in common is that we both love our families, even if they do drive us nuts sometimes.)

Favorite characters - other: Probably Trixie, Sunset Shimmer (they both have such potential and make interesting foils for Twilight) and the Cutie Mark Crusaders (what can I say, they're cute kids). Cheese Sandwich is also up there (I like Weird Al Yankovic, and his character has close ties to Pinkie).

Least favorite character: Discord is tolerable in fanfiction. Usually. The one episode I saw him in as of this writing ("Three's A Crowd"), he was extremely obnoxious and I could not stand him.

Favorite pairings: As mentioned above, I don't limit myself. Though I will admit a special fondness for TwiDash. Mostly because it often overlaps with one of my other favored plotlines for stories - see below.

Favorite concepts: I have a special fondness for stories where Twilight, or one of her friends, becomes a mother or otherwise expands her family. I have probably between forty and fifty fics of this type in my favorites on this site (going by my last count of 170 fics in my favorites), including quite a few Scootadopt fics. I'm not quite sure how this came about - it just did. I have more than a few variations in my own "to write eventually" list. Feel free to recommend ones I haven't found.
- I also like some "redemption" fics, where a former villain or nuisance reforms. But only if it's done well. (Example: Saphroneth's "MLP Time Loops", which redeems Trixie, Gilda, Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon, and even Chrysalis in a believable way.)

Least favorite concepts: Darkfics (such as those with graphic abuse, torture or gore scenes), fics with mindless sex, major character derailment. And that's all I have to say on that subject.

Goals for this fandom: To continue watching the series and reading fanfiction, and to one day, hopefully, develop some of my fanfic ideas. If only enough to post them on here so anyone who reads this can turn them into actual stories. Just let me know if you do, okay?

I'll probably have more to say at some point in the future. But this is it for now. So I'll leave you with my traditional closing for message board posts, letters and blogs:

Until next timeā€¦
