Bad Dragon

I write so that one day I may finally stop writing and be free, but these damn new ideas keep finding ways into my brain. I need to write more to vent them out!

Competition won with Princess of Friendship · 5:13pm Apr 10th, 2014

I just won a contest with my story Princess of Friendship.

Here's the winner announcement thread:
The Winner of the P.W.D. writing competition of Uncomfortable Situations is!

This accomplishment is going to earn me a temporary spot on the front page of:
The Pony Writing Debauchery of Uncomfortable Situations

I am very honored to have won a competition with my writing. I’ve been at this for less than a year, so I’m still quite self-conscious about my abilities as a writer. This approval, along with my other spotlights, therefore, means a lot to me.

For those of you who are aspiring to win a competition of your own, I sadly can not offer any foolproof advice on how to do it. You can, however, pose any questions you may have, and I'll try to answer them to the best of my abilities.

I would also like to hear your perspective on how to win in writing. Have you ever won a writing competition? When it comes to wining, are you like Maud Pie or like Rainbow Dash? Is writing for a contest different than writing for publishing? Do you have any tips for aspiring competitors (me included)? Got any links to competitions still in progress?

Bonus question: Which cover art would you prefer to see on my winning fic:
a)

b)

c)

d)

f)
Please post your own suggestion.

b :) Congratulations! :D

I totally knew you'd win when I read your story, because it's that good. :pinkiehappy: Congratulations!

Have you ever won a writing competition?

I once won an ebook for writing a tanka (similar to haiku, 5-7-5-7-7 form).

Is writing for a contest different than writing for publishing?

Contests usually have more specific rules, so yes I believe it's different.

Which cover art would you prefer to see on my winning fic:

I like A best, but while reading your story, I imagined Twilight was still her unicorn self.

1997490 1997492 Thanks.

1997528 Thank you. Those editing comments that you made really improved the quality of my story. I still owe you for that. I'm planning on another live commentary on your Rules of the (Slumber) Party fic, if that's okay with you, that is.

Gratz on your winning in tanka crafting. I know I won't ever win something like that. I've never written a haiku (or anything similar) before. I just can't get my head around it.

With writing for competition question I was aiming for the fact that your fic will be compared to the other fics. Perhaps one tries to make a story outstanding in some way when trying to write for competition. I could have entered this competition with my 9 other unpublished stories, but this was my most profound one.

I'm inclining for a) cover art also. I'll try it with black background to see if it can fit even better that way.

1997564 I'm glad to be of help. I'll check out your other fics sometime, too. And please do. I look forward to it.

Thank you. If you like, you should probably try writing one sometime. A haiku or tanka, that is. I think your thing for beige prose would translate well if you did, and I find it's a good exercise for imagery.

I never thought of it that way when I answered, but yes, that is a factor. Normally, I just write what I think would be awesome and hope for the best. But sometimes, I use the contest rules to my advantage. Like if there'd be a winner for each category, I tend to write for the category with less entries.
