Hi, I'm not dead! / Seriously Considering Writing

Been on a long hiatus, just coming back now, no idea for how long though.

The best way I can explain my absence is that I've simply been trying to juggle how I spend my free time. There are a lot of awesome communities I like to be involved in, but it really divides my attention- and my levels of interest in each have waxed and waned over time.

    I did a thing...

    Revelation 21:6

    .........Darkness...

That was the first thing he could perceive.

The next... pain. Building slowly into an overwhelming crescendo.

Immeasurable pain. Sharp. Stabbing. Piercing. Throbbing.

Each throb brought a new spike of pain, driven into his- side.

    Another throb, another spike.

Revelation 21:6

.........Darkness...

That was the first thing he could perceive.

The next... pain. Building slowly into an overwhelming crescendo.

Immeasurable pain. Sharp. Stabbing. Piercing. Throbbing.

Each throb brought a new spike of pain, driven into his- side.

Another throb, another spike.

Yep, that's where it's coming from alright, he thought darkly.

Another throb.

God... Fuck! ...Goddammit that hurts!

With a pained groan, he shifted slightly and opened one eye blearily. For a moment he was able to make out grey rectangular blobs reaching upwards beyond his vision and brightly colored splotches darting about.

Another spike, worse than before. Punishment for daring to move.

"AGGH! Fuck!" he cried out, shutting his eyes and tensing. His breath hitching in his throat.

After remaining motionless for a few moments, the pain subsided enough for him to breathe again.

"Owww... Ow-how-howww..." he muttered.

As his faculties slowly returned to him, his eyes blinked open, slowly, carefully. As he began to blink away the blurriness. He could make out a faint ringing in his ears.

He was in a square of some kind, boxed in partially by walls of grey cobblestone.

To his left, a stage, draped in brightly colored banners. But they didn't look right. They looked... tattered. Shredded. Ripped apart by an unknown force.

To his right, a raging fire among some stalls and carts. A market, he realized.

Smoke billowed from bright orange flames, engulfing the wooden carts one by one, devouring the thatch roofs nearby. Surrounding the inferno he could make out blackened, cracked, and shredded wood. And gradually clearing from his vision... ponies. Dozens of them. Running, limping, or being carried away. Mouths open, yelling- screaming silently. Eyes wide, pupils dilated. Bloodied.

Panic.

As the mass of ponies began to thin he could make out a few more on the ground, close to the epicenter of the carnage. Most were being helped and were, thankfully, moving about.

One blue figure... wasn't.

Nopony was helping her. Had she come alone?

...

Where's Colgate?

He looked about fanatically for her signature white and blue- there was only the pony on the ground.

......No...

No... No no no... Please no... She couldn't have- she can't be....

"...Colgate," he croaked.

He had to get up, he had to know. He shifted, more pain.

GET UP!

He willed himself to rise, powered by a brief spurt of rage at his own invalidity. The pain was immense, but began to subside. Shattered ribs and torn flesh stabilized- for the time being.

Shakily, he rose to his hooves and cried out, "Colgate!" before doubling over, coughing up blood.

That's a punctured lung, man am I fucked up...

He rose again and began to stumble in the mare's direction. Taking several shaky breaths, he called out again.

"Colgate!"

No response.

He willed himself to move faster, nearly tripping on the steel remains of some scaffolding. As he drew closer, he sped up. With every step he was more sure of her identity and more worried about the extent of her injuries.

After an eternity he finally stood over the mare.

It was her.

Her side was covered in gashes- multiple puncture wounds- burns...

He knelt down and felt for a pulse.

She was alive- just barely, but she was still alive.

The stallion appeared to raise his left foreleg and glance at his wrist, drawing a worried frown.

He glanced behind them, EMT's were running towards them. Turning back to his wrist, he began swiping at thin air.

She won't make it in time... And she's almost too far gone to begin with...

Taking a deep breath, he rose again, planting his hooves firmly on the cold stone of the square- and closed his eyes. He felt for that tingle within him and willed it to take shape. He felt a horn phase into existence on his forehead, seeming to grow in an instant out of his skull. He channeled his energy into it, weaving the spell in his mind.

As the energy built up around him, he took one final look around the square. The EMT's had stopped in their tracks and ponies began to stare at the growing light show. Small bolts of lighting began to arc out of his horn and a high pitched hum assaulted nearby eardrums. The tangled white lines of the spell grew brighter and brighter until it engulfed both of them.

"...Things were getting a bit boring anyway," he sighed, before screwing his eyes shut against the blinding light.

With a flash and a loud *CRACK*, the strange stallion disappeared, partner in tow.

The gathered ponies looked about for where they had gone. As the last reverberations of their departure faded, most drew only one conclusion: wherever they had gone, it was far, far away from here.

In a dark cavern, far below ground, a red light winked out and a green one took its place. Both were overshadowed however, by a deafening *click*.
