Welcome to Rambling Wednesdays! This week's topic is: Wings are completely fair
In the episode Fall Weather Friends, Applejack refuses to let RD use her wings. To the naked eye, this may seem completely fair. After all, RD can have speed boosts and AJ can't.
However, AJ, as an Earth pony, also has special advantages. Earth ponies were literally made for farming. Therefore, they have more strength and stamina than unicorns and Pegasi. AJ grew up used to her natural talents, just like RD grew up with wings. To not let RD use her wings would be akin to not letting AJ use her Earth pony strength or Twilight use her magic. They suffer when you stifle their strengths.
RD, as a Pegasus, does have wings. She also has hollow bones. As a direct result, she is more vulnerable to sprains and fractures and suited for speed rather than strength. The reason that there can never be a fair competition between the two is because they do not share the same talents.
