Chaff in My Head Cannon: Herd Mentality in Equestria

Bare with me here, this is probably going to get weird.

Ponies, and horses in general, are herd animals by nature. They follow similar dynamics to wolf packs, though it's a much more fluid arrangement. Whereas wolf packs tend to be linear, pony herds are more like tiers of dominance, with more than one pony able to be at any one tier.

    Twilight's Rivals

Had this thought going through my head and I'd like to share.

All of Twilight's rivals represent directions Twilight's life could have gone if she'd not been such a faithful student and then good friend.

Chaff in my Head Cannon: Starlight Glimmer

So, I was really enjoying the season 5 finale right up until the ending. And that ending got me thinking, and that thinking got me kind of annoyed.

How in the hay is Starlight Glimmer able to use magic that is equal to Twilight? Twilight froze an entire battle, but she couldn't overcome one unicorn? And when she and Starlight fight they both run out of juice at the same time?

Chaff in my Head Cannon: Fancy Pants

There was a lot rumbling around in my head today.

    Anyway, this will be short.

So, I was thinking about Fancy Pants a while ago and I was trying to reconcile why he was so successful, rich, and well connected yet still kept himself friendly and approachable.

I think it's his special talent.

Chaff in my Head Cannon: A Little Bit About Celestia and Luna · 8:26am Jan 19th, 2014

Prince Blueblood and Princess Cadence have both been identified as related to Celestia - that she was an aunt to both of them.

This intrigues me because it means Celestia has a brother or sister who has had children. Since we only know of one sister - Luna - it gives me pause. Luna is not likely to be either Cadence's nor Blueblood's mother. Her thousand years as the Mare in the Moon saw to that. So what we likely have is that she is most logically their some number of 'great' grandmother.

And what gets my gears turning is wondering who the stallion was and also wondering if Celestia has at times had someone to call her own. The most common version of this I've seen from others is that Sombra was the stallion. It's an interesting idea, but it doesn't really fit as Luna had to have had at least one child and it doesn't seem like that's something you could deal with while at the same time having to fight and imprison your former love.

Plus, there's the geography of it all - it just feels like too much of a stretch.

But it does get me thinking about the stallion. He was likely someone who cared deeply for Luna and helped her feel wanted despite her nights being, from her point of view, ignored. His death is quite possibly tied to her descent into Nightmare Moon.

This only further paints Luna into a tragic character and might explain why she has difficulties figuring out how to have fun. She went from battle to battle to ruling a nation to motherhood to some kind of loss to madness to imprisonment before finally finding herself free. That's a couple lifetimes worth of crap she's had to work through, so it's completely reasonable that she's looking for ways to enjoy herself with the duties she has now and not really knowing how to pull it off. She's earned a bit of a lighter load.

But, getting back to her husband, it's also possible that it wasn't his loss that pushed her towards insanity, but the loss of her children, or her grandchildren. It's one of the things I think would be the most difficult to live with for Celestia and Luna. They get to watch generation after generation pass away. It'd be heartbreaking for the most closed off of people, and Celestia comes across as someone who finds a way to enjoy everyone. No one isn't worth her time. It's a great trait.

And it makes me wonder whether or not she's tried having relationships, children, family, whatever. Some sibling of hers has, most likely Luna since we don't know of any others, but is her ability to love all her subjects partly compensation for something she doesn't allow herself to have? Is she perhaps barren and unable to have children?

I'm not sure. But it certainly makes for some fun jumping off points.

Luna's progeny, Celestia's love life, and whether or not they even still permit themselves to really expand either. I see scores of possibilities.
