Fic recs, April 22nd: Jordan179 edition

Once again, though a good bit late, I bring it upon myself to memorialize an author via reviews of their stories. Though this time, it's different, as I had no connection to Jordan179 and only learned of his passing (three years ago this month, coincidentally), from this post

Another post about video games and Youtube and stuff

If I'm going to waste time watching shit on Youtube, the least I can do is tell people about it. :P

Ceave is a crazy Austrian with a love of video games and a head for philosophizing about them. Plus he really, really hates coins, no matter how tasty they may look.

Do you like video games? How about philosophy?

I like one of those things for sure, but no one combines the two better than a Youtuber named InfernalRamblings, a former professional game developer who now creates hour and a half long video essays about the meanings of video games and how they relate to the world today. Here's a few highlights, since this is now basically my only

Fic recs, December 27th! · 1:30pm Dec 27th, 2013

Forget posting schedules, let's see if I can hit 600 reviews by the end of the year! :V (Probably not.)

Apples and Oranges by BieberLover124
Mature: Sex
Reading by ABronyThatPwnys
Genre: Badfic
This is… not even worth comment. The story link doesn’t work anymore (thank God), the reading is not even three minutes long, and it’s just a string of ‘words’ describing Apple Bloom being raped by family members. But hey, a human being wrote this.

Pinkie Pie’s New Game by SummerHazel
Mature: Sex
Reading by ABronyThatPwnys
Genre: PWP
So Pinkie shows Fluttershy a new "game" called “clopping”. This more or less involves raping her. (I’m sensing a trend with these readings.) There’s also incidental foal-on-foal action. Yeah. ThankfullyUnfortunately, the reading is incomplete and the story no longer exists, so gee I guess I’ll just have to wonder what happens next. :| Seriously, ignore this story.

In Memoria Di by TrebleClef91
Reading by ABronyThatPwnys
Genre: “Sad”
Rainbow Dash visits Scootaloo’s grave and I start laughing. So help me, I couldn’t stop. Aside from having a very maudlin plot, the writing is extremely poor (“Rainbow Dash’s eyes turned into water”?) That’s really all I can say about this. I’m glad ABronyThatPwnys doesn’t have any more readings. (Though I’ll admit some of his commentary made this even funnier.)

All Dead, All Dead by Nathan
Genre: Behind the Scenes
I was all ready to write this off in the first half. It’s a season one setup I’ve seen before: Celestia-the-Schemer orchestrated the entire Nightmare Moon debacle to maneuver Twilight into becoming the Element of Magic. But as poorly as this story has aged over three seasons, I couldn’t help but feel it resound with some more recent developments, most especially the furor of speculation that erupted over the appearance of the book at the end of The Crystal Kingdom. (Also, he named Twilight's predecessor “Shimmer Shine”, that was pretty fun.) The revelation of what, exactly, Celestia was doing definitely caught me off guard, and that's what gives me something to recommend.

The Corpse Bride by Bad Horse
Reading by Scribbler and NDLMongoose
Genre: Dark
I love how the title makes it very clear what’s happening in the first scene. I wanted to label this a “dark comedy”, but actually it’s not all that comedic by the end. What it is is a great look at Discord and Fluttershy’s friendship, specifically what happens after she dies. (I’m so mad, that’s something I wanted to write about, but I fear that ship has already sailed.) I do have a couple of problems with this, but Applejack actually covers most of them in the middle scene, so I guess the lesson here is “Always listen to Applejack, dammit”. The only problem remaining is that of implications related to choice. Twilight wants to end Fluttershy’s suffering at Discord’s hands, and has to go through a lot of justifications to reach an action point. And sure, if they’d asked her what she wanted, she probably would have been against it for any number of reasons, but having them go ahead with the plan without even trying to ask her first felt a little wrong. Of course, the ending makes it clear that there was really no “right” answer in this situation, so I can’t be too mad, I'd just have liked to see it addressed in the story. (Also, for the record, while DiscoShy is on my List of Ships I Cannot Abide, this is officially now the only way I will accept their relationship as being anything other than friendly/slightly antagonistic.)

Path of Discord by Lance Hardwood
Mature: Sex
Genre: Fetish Odyssey
I read the first chapter of this long ago and have decided to finish it up because Lance Hardwood “completed” it by releasing his notes for the ending. This is essentially a sexy revision of Return of Harmony. It's actually the author’s first attempt at clopfic, which might explain some of the bizarreness, like the very matter-of-fact way in which Twilight describes numerous sexual occurrences at the start. There is an awful lot of side comedy in this story, and I have no way of knowing how much of it is intentional. But this is just out and out weird. I mean, where else are you going to read about Twilight fellating a wall? Or see a line like “I summoned my personal dildo from its pocket dimension”? Of course, said humor is also mitigated significantly by the fact that Twilight and her friends are more or less raped continuously throughout this little adventure. I’m pleased (I suppose) to say that this is at least dealt with properly in the story itself. So yes, the tone shifts from funny to uncomfortable to seriously uncomfortable. And why not? Because it turns out this story was meant as an enormous troll-shaming fic, and I applaud the fuck out of the author for going that route. Of course, the fact that he never finished it means that no one gets any points, but okay.

Hell Is Other Ponies by alexmagnet
Genre: Absurdity
Unfortunately, the inaugural writeoff for the Fimfiction group has been plagued with problems, the most recent of which involves the site being down during the last few days of voting. As a result, it has been decreed that people can submit their stories, dropping all pretense of anonymity, and alexmagnet has been the first to take the bait. This story is fun, but there’s a major caveat: Twilight is 100% out of character. The plot involves her sending ponies to the moon one after another because she’s just tired of them being around or something. It is, like I said, more funny than dark, but for some readers, it will be a hard pill to swallow.

Where the Heart Is by Benman
Genre: Holiday Vignette
I’m not the only person to point this out, but there’s one issue with this piece: it needs another scene. The first scene especially feels like something is being set up, but just before the 700 word mark, it stops. With that said, for what it is, it’s quite good. I’m most impressed by how much Ben is able to pack into 700 words (for instance, the identity of a strangely-named OC who is never seen). Anyone looking for something seasonal might enjoy the opening scene, at least.

...

Is this the rape edition of fic recs? Or is Rape the new Peaches? I gotta get on this rape bandwagon, man.

Rape has been peaches since Fallout: Equestria.

Thanks for the review, present. It's always reassuring to me to see you liked something even when I see so much butthurt in the comments of my fic. Anyway, great reviews as always. I like seeing the massive variety of fics you read.

I'll show up on one of these someday!
Aside from that, The Corpse Bride looks good...

Awesome recommendations as always. Nice to see one of Alex's tales up here.

Just one thing. Today is the 27th
This blog says it's for the 17th

Did... we all somehow travel back in time?

I am unsure as to how I feel about the idea of you continuing to read "weird sex" stories. :applejackconfused:

I get the feeling I should serious avoid ABronyThatPwnys. :derpyderp2: How the heck can someone make so many very, very bad choices for fic readings? And what does it say about a person if they only thing you choose to read is bad, non-con clopfic? *shudders*

Not sure why you would even consider listening to or reading these in the first place, much less giving them the benefit of a review, negative or not.

I'm slightly miffed by the fact that I don't enjoy them as much as I used to. :/

But schmaltzy death fics, those I'm all over. :V

I've seen some readers who are dedicated to reading trollfics and other sundries. But like I said, he's inactive, this is the entirety of his output.

1653777
To your first point, well, I'll try anything once. :B To the second...

After posting this, I realized I'd told myself I wouldn't bother reviewing anything I had nothing to say about. I think I could have put that rule to use in the case of awful stories that are no longer accessible, for sure. But I'm kind of OCD. :B

... that's what the story was about. It was a lot wrong. Hence the tragedy tag. See the argument in the comments on the meaning of "tragedy" for details.
