Can Anyone Suggest a Good Dark Anime? · 6:47pm Dec 13th, 2013
My brother wants a new anime for Christmas, but I don't like the same stuff he does. While I like light and funny, he likes dark and heavy. I'm looking for something with deep themes, strong characters, and complex stories. He's still only 15, so no excessive gore and absolutely no ecchi. Anyone have any suggestions?
Madoka? I feel like the art style my not come off as something he'd be interested in, but it certainly is dark.
Mirai Nikki is something that I personally love. You might wanna do a quick check to see if it's right for your brother.
Ghost Hunt is one that I only saw one episode of, so I can't say that there's no sexual themes, but I assume that there isn't much if any at all.
Shikabane Hime might be too bloody, but I feel like it's worth suggesting to you at least.
Canaan is dark, people get shot, but it's nothing over the top.
Princess Resurrection is dark and humorous.
These are just some of the ones I can come up with off the top of my head.
Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Is a good, dark show hidden beneath a cute exterior. There is blood, but I don't think it's overly gorey. The characters are also very relate able.
Princess Tutu: You could be forgiven for thinking that a show called Princess Tutu couldn't be dark, but it is. After about the first six or so episodes the show gets darker, much darker, and doesn't let up until the final episode. The show hardly has any violence at all. It's characters are also some of the best that I've seen in anime, and they go through some wonderful character development throughout the series.
Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan): While it definitely has quite a bit of blood and gore, its plot and characters are amazing. I was hooked almost instantly.
Chuunibyou: Has great characters and what I think is a darker plot once the show gets going.
Evangelion Movies: The movies are like the anime only better. I think they fit all the criteria you listed. It's got great characters, a complex plot, and amazing action and music.
I hope these suggestions help I've watched all of these to completion, so I can vouch for them!

That's too funny! You would've given some good recommendations. I approve.

He's seen Modoka and liked it if that helps. He also doesn't like "girly" too much.

I see. I suppose I can understand about Princess Tutu being too "girly". It's still worth a try though. Admittedly, if it weren't for ponies then I probably wouldn't haven given it a shot either, but let's see if I can think of some other titles.
Genei wo kakeru taiyou: It's similar to Madoka Magica so he might be interested in it.
Vampire Hunter D Blood Lust: To be honest, I don't really remember what happens in it, but I think it's got some dark things in it.
Danganronpa: I haven't actually finished this yet (I've only seen the first episode). However, I believe this is a darker anime.
Admittedly the restrictions will limit your search quite a bit for "dark". This is all I've got for now. Well, I do have one more, but it kind of breaks every last restriction you have 'Hellsing Ultimate'. It's rather graphic, but I really like it. I hope these additions help you. If I can think of more, I'll post.
Hellsing
Deadman Wonderland
Attack of the Titans
Black Lagoon
Code Geass
Elfen Lied
Wolf's Rain
Berserk
Evangelion
Tehxnolyze
Mirai Nikki
Eden: It's an Endless World
Biomega
Serial Experiments Lain
Shiki
MPD Psycho
Battle Royale
Bokurano
Narutaru
Madoka Magica
Blood C
Gantz
And that is my list to you. Now a lot of these are mature sooo just fyi.
yeah Attack on Tittan is nice and heavy
Darker Than Black, Ergo Proxy, and a second vote for both Black Lagoon and Tehxnolyze (those last two are wicked dark). The Evangelion reboot (You Are (Not) Alone, &c.) is pretty good too, and isn't hampered by all the umpteen seasons of Evangelion backstory. Gunslinger Girl (season one) and Moon Phase aren't dark per se, but they are more mature than your normal animu. Last but not least is Akira, which is like the angry Korean War vet granddaddy of dark anime.
