The Day of the Dead Anthology

The Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) is a now-famous tradition from ancient times that has been a huge part of Mexican Culture through the centuries. Like so many things in Mexico, it's influenced strongly by certain aspects of the Aztec people.

It has shaped the way those of us with that heritage look at life and death in many ways, and most importantly on the remembrance of, and honoring the deceased. We traditionally decorate little altars dedicated to the memories of those that passed away… but it's not a somber occasion.

PSA: Using AIs to Write and Publish Stories in Fimfiction

Hello everyone, this is a PSA (Public Service Announcement, for those of ESL) to put to rest consistent questions about using AI to 'write' stories and publish them here. This is not intended as a poll or a request for feedback. It is exclusively a clarification on an already-existing rule.

People ask: "Can I, oh great and powerful D, post a story or chapter that I got ChatGPT to write for me?!"

And the answer, my friend, is... No.

Absolutely not. Not in a thousand years!

    Because you didn't write it.

It is not your creation. You are NOT the author. In fact, you are the opposite.

There seems to be some confusion when interpreting the following rule:

    Don’t Post (Content)

    Phishing Awareness

Have you ever found yourself in a situation like this?

And then you magically find yourself in a suspiciously familiar site, except that you're not logged in, and it requires you to do so?

Well. Don't log in. This is a scam, and a cheap one at that.

There've been recent attempts to obtain Fimfiction users’ personal data, like passwords and/or emails through links like the one I'm making fun of above. And a distressing amount of people don't seem to know what phishing attempts are.

If you HAVE entered a site like this and put in your data, make sure to follow these basic steps at least.

All Our Best [Royal Canterlot Library]

As should be obvious from 15 months without a feature, life has taken the Royal Canterlot Library curators in different directions. While there’s still plenty of awesome stories being written in the My Little Pony fandom, we’re no longer actively working to spotlight them, and it’s time to officially draw the project to a close.

Thank you for all of your support, suggestions, and comments over the years. We’re grateful to have been able to share seven years of exemplary stories with you, and give more insight into the minds behind them. In the spirit of the project, please keep reading and recommending fantastic fics to friends—the community is enriched when we all share what we love.

    Reunions: A Swapped Roles Contest!

Okay guys here's something fun presented by Nitro Indigo.

Presented by me, I guess, but I digress.

Last year, I (Nitro Indigo) noticed that there was a surprising lack of roleswap fanfics on this site. To fix that, I decided to run a roleswap contest over the summer themed around secrets. While it didn’t get many entries, it nevertheless attracted the attention of some big authors and was the origin of two of my favourite fics. Overall, I think it was a success, so I’ve decided to run another one!

    Minor Rules and Reporting Update

Hope everyone is enjoying the new year.

Some small changes have been made to our rules as well as to the reporting process.

    Rules

"No attacks directed at individuals or groups due to race, gender, gender identity, religion or sexual identity."

This better clarifies our previously ill-defined hate speech rule and includes groups as well as individual attacks.

"No celebration, glorification or encouragement of real life criminal activity."

This includes past, present and potential future crimes.

    Jinglemas 2019

There's truly no time like the holidays. What's better than copious amounts of food, quality time with family and friends, hearing the sweet sound of Trans-Siberian Orchestra on repeat, and unmanagble financial stress from our capitalist overlords?

    Gift exchanges of course!

Site Post » Minor Fimfiction Skin Update · 4:33am Dec 5th, 2013

Over the past couple of days I've been working on cleaning up some of Fimfic's skin which has slowly morphed away from my original design as things got hacked on, which tends to happen a lot (look at any big site like youtube and you'll see all sorts of mismatched styles).

The biggest change is icon changes. I haven't completed this change yet but basically instead of image icons I'm now using FontAwesome which means the icons are actually now a font. This means they are easy to colour, resize, and look gorgeous on high dpi phones/tablets. Sadly chrome does an awful job rendering them but you take the good with the bad....

Other than that, I've changed the headers on top of content boxes, changed some colours for toolbars and made buttons prettier. I've also removed the ability to set custom backgrounds. I know this is gonna cause fallout, but it had to be done. I'm gonna be honest, adding that functionality was a huge mistake on my part and I've regretted it since I did it. When I don't know what colour the site is going to be, I have zero control on how things are laid out. I have to put everything in boxes because I can't risk putting dark text on a dark background. This is hugely detrimental to site design and thus it had to go. If you must have a dark background, learn how to write greasemonkey scripts or use stylish, because I'm not going to be officially supporting it anymore. I hope you can appreciate the reasoning behind this change even if I know it will annoy a lot of you. Hopefully the revert to a more warm colour scheme will soothe the pain a bit.

I hope we can agree these came out pretty sexy

edit: If you have problems with the site brightness, it means your monitor is too bright. Try turning it down.

Alex Edit: If the icons are coming up as strange boxes, it's probably because you have NoScript running. Check this image for the solution.

Muh backgrounds

I like it, really.

I just want the 'dark background' option back.

The brightness hurts my eyes, see.

But, I like it, overall.

~Skeeter The Lurker

I'm okay with this, surprisingly.

The story statistics feature is neat!

I kind of like it all. It looks sleek, Knighty.

Literally saw it happen just now! Nice!

can you return the update story color icon back to the original yellow/orange?

Yip

You ruin everything

(i like it)

I am okay with this. :pinkiehappy:

Wow, these new boxes look really cool :pinkiehappy: Well done King Knighty

Do like. Much cleaner look, and the comment buttons are a TON easier for me to see now. Thank you.

I'm missing all the symbols. They appear as boxes with letters and numbers inside. Anyone know how to get my symbols back?

I don't know about any of you, but I find this update pretty dang sexy. I find it a good way to get back to the old look FIMFiction had with the plaid, warm background. I also like how the font is now and the buttons. Along with that, I am on Google Chrome and this change looks great! Also the warm colors feel more like home now.

I love it knightly!

1) this is something that you should have warned us about, as in doing this blog earlier in the day, or maybe yesterday even.

2) and it was you specifically that recommended Chrome to me. lol (I now use it for nearly everything)

I dont think it looks bad at all personally. just gonna take a bit of getting use to, but the general site layout remains the same, so I aint gonna complain.

Some changes I don't like, some are actually pretty good. Just another day on Fimfiction.

I don't like this, up and down arrows are too subtle now because it does not fill them in with color. Cant we have a setting to tell the site to load it the old way for people who don't like skins?

Or at the very least have it when you select up or down arrow for a vote it fills the thumb in entirely? I have a feeling Chrome is making this not look as pretty as it should look?

i hate it. to bland:eeyup:

I like it.

Silver out!

1573582 I agree, the site is now too bright for me. I liked reading my fiction on a darker screen rather than one that's so bright I get blinded when switching to it

It does look very sleek. You said something about things being easier to colorize now because it's mostly all a font type. Does that mean that you are going to add the option to change the color of all site interface text?

I am digging these new looks to be honest.

Well done and yay!!

Those buttons and stuff don't seem to be loading for me, Knighty. I'm using Firefox 25.0.1

EDIT: Guys, we know what's causing it now.

http://netdna.bootstrapcdn.com/font-awesome/4.0.3/css/font-awesome.css

White-list THAT in noscript and it'll work. If you don't, it won't pick 'em up and the buttons will look screwy. The CSS for the buttons font is being run off-site.

Beautiful. :raritystarry: I noticed some random changes suddenly. :derpyderp1: I thought I lost it more then I already have. :pinkiecrazy: Love your work bud. Now to see how to do the script thingy since you said so. I might have to and might not. I'm not sure. :trollestia:

The sex appeal is doubled!

Hmm... Since the menu bar's color is controlled by the banner, most the colors do no play well with the black icons you've chosen. White would be better as it is higher contrast.

I miss the custom backgrounds, but this is okay.

Yip

Hey, what's with the chapter names on the bar graphs for stories? Not saying it's a bad thing, I just have no idea what it's trying to tell me.

I have to say I'm not terribly thrilled with the change but it's certainly not awful and I'm sure I'll grow to appreciate it. Looks good, otherwise.

It looks nice! I like it. I'm going to miss my "Twilight Sparkle" theme though.

1573621

Same here. I'm also on Firefox 25.0.1.

Damn. I only just chose a background a couple hours ago:facehoof: I dunno, I'm not sure if I'm a fan of clean-cut appearances but whatever.

Might be some kind of block happening on the font. It's on an external domain. Do you have any extensions to block other domains loading?

I think some of my icons are broken....
EDIT: Fixed it.

1573643 I'm running noScript, yeah. It's not a font stored on the site or something? Okay, what domain to I need to whitelist?

-clicks home tab to update view count on new story, and-
Holy hell what happened! and I like it too much to want the old one back.

Damn sexy, indeed, knighty. Takes one to know one:eeyup:

Gorgeous like my avatar. :moustache:

1573643 Actually I clicked "Temporarily allow all this page" and it still doesn't work. And I've always got Fimfiction.net whitelisted, and the ad domains...

On second thought...

I suppose the backgrounds being unchangeable isn't anything too terrible.

I'll just keep the contrast down, as usual.

~Skeeter The Lurker

awww, i liked the old one! crud...

This is where the font is located. See if that's being blocked.

The highlighted favorites button looks hideous to me, it being dark orange on blue, but I guess that's the price of having a variably-colored nav bar. :applejackunsure:

Meh. Needs a way to darken the background. It's a bit too bright for my eyes...

But at least you aren't as bad as Google+.

Gahhh!
What the buck have you done to my sexy night background? Now I can't match it with my Luna banner. :applecry:
Oh well, I guess times are changing. That being said, anyone working on a script for a darker background? If not, guess I'll get used to it.
