The Day of the Dead Anthology

The Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) is a now-famous tradition from ancient times that has been a huge part of Mexican Culture through the centuries. Like so many things in Mexico, it's influenced strongly by certain aspects of the Aztec people.

It has shaped the way those of us with that heritage look at life and death in many ways, and most importantly on the remembrance of, and honoring the deceased. We traditionally decorate little altars dedicated to the memories of those that passed away… but it's not a somber occasion.

PSA: Using AIs to Write and Publish Stories in Fimfiction

Hello everyone, this is a PSA (Public Service Announcement, for those of ESL) to put to rest consistent questions about using AI to 'write' stories and publish them here. This is not intended as a poll or a request for feedback. It is exclusively a clarification on an already-existing rule.

People ask: "Can I, oh great and powerful D, post a story or chapter that I got ChatGPT to write for me?!"

And the answer, my friend, is... No.

Absolutely not. Not in a thousand years!

    Because you didn't write it.

It is not your creation. You are NOT the author. In fact, you are the opposite.

There seems to be some confusion when interpreting the following rule:

    Don’t Post (Content)

    Phishing Awareness

Have you ever found yourself in a situation like this?

And then you magically find yourself in a suspiciously familiar site, except that you're not logged in, and it requires you to do so?

Well. Don't log in. This is a scam, and a cheap one at that.

There've been recent attempts to obtain Fimfiction users’ personal data, like passwords and/or emails through links like the one I'm making fun of above. And a distressing amount of people don't seem to know what phishing attempts are.

If you HAVE entered a site like this and put in your data, make sure to follow these basic steps at least.

All Our Best [Royal Canterlot Library]

As should be obvious from 15 months without a feature, life has taken the Royal Canterlot Library curators in different directions. While there’s still plenty of awesome stories being written in the My Little Pony fandom, we’re no longer actively working to spotlight them, and it’s time to officially draw the project to a close.

Thank you for all of your support, suggestions, and comments over the years. We’re grateful to have been able to share seven years of exemplary stories with you, and give more insight into the minds behind them. In the spirit of the project, please keep reading and recommending fantastic fics to friends—the community is enriched when we all share what we love.

    Reunions: A Swapped Roles Contest!

Okay guys here's something fun presented by Nitro Indigo.

Presented by me, I guess, but I digress.

Last year, I (Nitro Indigo) noticed that there was a surprising lack of roleswap fanfics on this site. To fix that, I decided to run a roleswap contest over the summer themed around secrets. While it didn’t get many entries, it nevertheless attracted the attention of some big authors and was the origin of two of my favourite fics. Overall, I think it was a success, so I’ve decided to run another one!

    Minor Rules and Reporting Update

Hope everyone is enjoying the new year.

Some small changes have been made to our rules as well as to the reporting process.

    Rules

"No attacks directed at individuals or groups due to race, gender, gender identity, religion or sexual identity."

This better clarifies our previously ill-defined hate speech rule and includes groups as well as individual attacks.

"No celebration, glorification or encouragement of real life criminal activity."

This includes past, present and potential future crimes.

    Jinglemas 2019

There's truly no time like the holidays. What's better than copious amounts of food, quality time with family and friends, hearing the sweet sound of Trans-Siberian Orchestra on repeat, and unmanagble financial stress from our capitalist overlords?

    Gift exchanges of course!

Site Post » [Interview] Butterscotch Sundae's The Party Hasn't Ended · 10:12pm Apr 16th, 2012

Originally posted at the Vault on 12/2/11.

If you like good PinkieDash shipping story, look no further! This epic tale brings us along into their dreams and nightmares, as they come closer than they ever expected to be.

[Adventure][Shipping][Tragedy] • 54,300 words
Pinkie Pie's unrequited love for Rainbow Dash reaches a crisis point as she fears the party in her heart has at long last come to an end.

Hit the title for an interview with Butters herself and links to The Party Never Ended on your favorite pony sites, and check out the Vault's Downloads page to grab a copy in your preferred eBook format!

If you're interested in more Butterscotchy goodness and the idea of a mature discussion about sexuality and clopfiction doesn't upset you, check out another interview she did with Doctor Dapples, one of our previous Vault authors. (Fun fact: the good Doctor's interviews with Butterscotch and Coffeebean were part of the inspiration behind including author interviews here at the Vault!)

Where do you live?

Sydney, Australia.

What kind of work do you do? (i.e. are you a student, do you have a career/day job, etc)

I’m an English teacher at a high school.

How did you discover My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic? When did you realize you were a fan of the show?

I saw it on 4chan’s comics board /co/. I kept seeing all this fanart of lesbian ponies and I was just taken aback by the sheer cuteness of it all and I had to watch the show that had inspired the images!

Do you have a favorite episode? [Editor’s note: at the time of this interview, the most recent aired episode was May The Best Pet Win.]

Look Before you Sleep - the best character-driven episode in the series so far, in my opinion. Twi became adorkable and not just a grouch, and the Rarity and Applejack ship set sail!

Who is your favorite character based purely on the canon of the show itself? Would your answer change if you considered the fandom in its entirety (i.e. art, fanfiction, memes, etc)?

Pinkie Pie. I don’t think the answer would change if I considered the fandom as a whole (the only fandom I care about is the stuff that is true to the canon characters anyway) - although I do love Derpy (our very own wall-eyed angel!)

How did you come up with your handle/penname?

It literally came to me out of the blue. I’d decided I wanted to write some FiM fanfiction, and I thought to myself - what’s an adorable name that would be appropriate for the writer of cute and sugary stories starring colourful, magical ponies? “Butterscotch Sundae” was literally the first thing that popped into my head, and I went with it.

Have you written in other capacities (other fandoms, professionally, etc)? When did you first start writing?

I’ve dabbled in writing a few times in my life, some serious stuff and also fanfiction (I used to write Lucky Star fanfiction of all things!), but this is the first time I’ve had the discipline to actually write something worthy of recognition within a fandom.

What do you like to do when you're not writing?

Gardening too little. Drinking too much.

Who is your favorite author (published or fanfiction)? Do you have a favorite story or novel?

My favourite author for plot and general mind-fuckery is Philip K Dick. For the quality of prose, either Nabakov or Steinbeck. My favourite novel changes all the time, but at the moment it’s probably Cormac McCarthy’s The Road.

Stephen King believes that every author has an "ideal reader" - the one person who they write for, the one person whose reactions they care about. Do you have one, and if so, who is it?

I have a lot of respect for Stephen King - he’s the one writer who seems to be able to talk about writing with a complete lack of pretentiousness. An ideal reader? I’d have to say it’s a burnt out individual like myself who longs for romance, cuteness and magic in their real life, and for whom the adorable adventures of candy-coloured equines offers them the perfect escape from the “bluh”ness of our own world.

Do you have any tips for aspiring writers, or writers who are struggling with their own stories?

This is an extremely annoying piece of advice that all aspiring and struggling writers get, and I used to hate getting it, but the truth of it cannot be avoided - WRITE. You must write as much as you can, every day, to get yourself into the discipline of producing words. Never, ever be one of those individuals who calls themselves a “writer” and who constantly talks about writing but never does any.

What is your typical writing process? (Do you work through multiple drafts, do you have any prereaders/editors, etc?)

I used to write a handwritten copy, but now I type the first draft straight into a digital document. I think the writing you produce is different when you do it this way, but I haven’t decided how it’s different exactly and whether it produces material that’s better or worse than handwriting. All I know is that it saves an awful lot of typing stuff up, which I hate!

What inspired you to write The Party Hasn’t Ended?

A friend of mine (OK, he’s called Auraion on DA and CANDYBAG on 4chan’s /co/ *shudder*) asked me to write a Pinkie-Dash shipping story.

Did you run into any tough spots or challenges when writing The Party Hasn’t Ended?

Party was originally intended to be a one-shot, ending with Pinkie destroying her secret monthly party for Dash and Dash never learning that she was in love with her. But then I decided that I didn’t want to end it on such a sad note, and wrote another part - and then another - and another, until ended up as more a novel than a fanfic! So I guess the challenge was actually getting the plot to a place where Dash and Pinkie being together made sense, and for that to happen it turns out a lot of drama and adventure had to happen!

When you set out to write The Party Hasn’t Ended, did you have any specific messages or themes in mind?

There is no place so dark that the power of love cannot illuminate the way out.

Where can readers drop you a line?

You can email me on butterscotchsundae.ponipower@gmail.com, or come and see me at buttersc0tchsundae.deviantart.com! I actually reply to people’s comment or questions (although it can take me a while sometimes, for which I apologise in advance...)

Is there anything else you'd like to add?

I hope you enjoy the story!

I totally hate PinkieDash, but I've got that fic on my to-read-list since... ever? I don't think I can put it longer aside... hm.

"I actually reply to people’s comment or questions"
so true, she is awesome, replies every comment.

This story made me cry, I'm not ashamed to admit.:fluttercry:

Thanks for the reminder, failcraft.

The post here and over at the Vault has been updated with the FIMFic link (the story wasn't here when I did the interview back in December - sorry everyone!).

This one has a permanent spot on my top ten list. I read it ages ago before I even came to FIMFiction, when I saw it on EqD. I'm so glad it got uploaded here as well. The story in general was good, but there was one part towards the end that really sticks out in my mind and always makes me smile. I'll refrain from getting too spoilery, but suffice to say it involves Dash and singing. If you've read the story, you know what I mean. :raritywink::heart:

It was the first full-length fanfic I've ever read

It's not as deep as Eternal and not as cutesy as Allegrezza but is unique in its own way

The story is unbelievably epic for what seems like a romance

I tend to hate that ship too, but The Party Hasn't Ended is still one of my favorite fan fictions. It's definitely worth the time it takes to read.

72841>>73259
i dont really hate that particular pairing; its more like i have a hard to getting myself to read anything that doesnt involve one or any combination of twilight, celestia and luna to a high degree. mentioning this cause i've also had that fic on my 'to-read' list for ages, would have taken it of the list ages ago if it wasent written by one of my favorite authors :twilightsheepish:

This story is in my top ten list permanently, as in it will never be taken off, ever.

This is the fanfic that got me into shipping. Because of it I have Pinkiedash as part of my permanent headcanon. Also one the first fanfics i ever read. Not mlp fanfics, fanfics in general.

I haven't finished 'The Party hasn't ended' yet. Nothing wrong with the story itself, I just haven't gotten around to it yet.
Also in no small part that PinkieDash isn't exactly my favorite ship. I have this weird thing where if two ponies are too similar in some way I don't like the ship.
Anyway, it's also nice to get some insight into Butterscotch.

I'm waiting for the rest of "Much Ahoof About Nothing".

I was a reader on deviantart of Butterscotch's stories before I came here. How lame it may seem, I found my liking toward MLP fanfics from her stories. I really thought they were great and read them and thought, "It may seem strange that I enjoy this, but its all in good fun."
Thank you Butterscotch Sundae

She's even what made me attempt at writing. :derpytongue2:

I've read quite a few ButterScotch stories.

Aaaandd... I didn't like them, I'm all for shipping no matter what it is. But maaaann, did Butters' stories really do nothing for me. I found RagingSemi's stories more enjoyable.

Plus, she have a very weird online ego, I don't know if it's just me, but I found it rather disturbing when I read one of her stories where herself makes out with her OC during an interview that she made up.

I don't see what people see in her, but you can keep on reading. I also don't like it when people pretend to be their OC's/Persona's, which Butters' does a lot.
