That moment you realize you're probably doing a little too much research for stories about colorful cartoon horses. · 6:48pm Oct 13th, 2013

Vikings use to have rap battles.

I know this now because of a wiki-crawl for some real life inspiration. I found the idea so cool that I knew I had to include something like it. Thus I began to research traditional skaldic poetry styles. I spent most of my afternoon figuring out how dróttkvœtt meter works. For how it works the helpful website I found had this oh-so easy explanation and example.

Hrammtangar lætr hanga
hrynvirgil mér brynju
Höðr á hauki troðnum
heiðis vingameiði;

ritmœdis knák reiða
ræðr gunnvala bræðir
gelgju seil á galga
geirveiðrs, lofi at meira.

This stanza, like much of the skaldic poetry, uses the dróttkvœtt meter (the heroic meter). Each stanza has eight lines, and each line has six syllables. Three syllables in each line must be stressed, and the last syllable must be unstressed. The lines are linked in alliterating pairs, and the first line of each pair must have two alliterating syllables. All lines must have internal rhyme.

So there you have it. Easy as mud. The hardest part isn't the rhyme, all of mine ended up sounding like Zecora was saying them. It was the alliterations that were the hardest to do while still making the lines insulting (but funny). Stupid vikings.
