    Investment

Why do I care? When I read fanfiction, what is the trigger that makes me go from 'Eh, I don't have time from this' to 'Huh, I might check this out' to 'I am looking forward to the next update!'
Usually, my point of investment is the point when I have a question I want to answer, or an expectation of something I already know I like.

    Fallout Equestria and its Sidestories

I've been binge-reading (listening to) days and days worth of Fallout Equestria fanfiction since August, and had read a Fallout Equestria and a couple side-stories well before the binge. I thought I'd make a list of which ones I've read, which ones I've liked the most, and what I think of the ones I've read thusfar in general.

    Featured Box

The 'Featured Box' I see so many fanfic authors mention is that big box on the front page without any label, right? It's always puzzled me. The contents don't seem to update on any particular schedule, and unlike 80% of the other elements on the front page, there's nothing to explain what the box is for. It's just BAM have some story titles and summaries!

Fallout Equestria and its Sidestories · 3:11pm Oct 13th, 2013

I've been binge-reading (listening to) days and days worth of Fallout Equestria fanfiction since August, and had read a Fallout Equestria and a couple side-stories well before the binge. I thought I'd make a list of which ones I've read, which ones I've liked the most, and what I think of the ones I've read thusfar in general.
But I don't have as much time to ramble as I would like, so for this first post I'll probably stick to just brief comments about which I enjoy the most and highly recommend. In order of most GO READ THIS NOW to least GO READ IT THIS WEEK

1: Fallout Equestria: Pink Eyes. This one's a goofy romp through a unique section of the wasteland through the eyes of an effectively-undedead child. There's some sad bits. There's dramatic bits. And there's happy bits too. But in terms of laugh-out-loud funny FoE setting fics, I don't know any better. And as a bonus, it even manages to avoid being particularlly gruesome when plot-relevant violence does come up.

2: Fallout: Equestria. Most of my other recommendations on this list won't make a great deal of sense without having read the fic that set up this FiM Alternate Universe. It's a solid action adventure tale with humor sprinkled throughout. Prior knowledge of FiM or Fallout is not necessary to enjoy the story. (This is the story that eventually convinced me to even TRY Fallout games.)

3: Fallout Equestria: Second Wind. Everything on this list beyond the first two is going to have a lot more explicit graphic violence. This one in particular involves a lot of death-eating semi-robot necromantic thingies that are unique to this portrayal of Equestria. And there's a rape-murder scene. BUT! It also has a super snarky silly protagonist with fun oneliners that has used a sofa both as a projectile weapon and a transport vehicle. And it has a floating Pinkie robot in it. Lotsa good funny moments if the violence doesn't bother. A number of sad moments too, though.

4: Fallout Equestria: Heroes. The protagonist is not that smart. And then gets fanficed up into cyberpony warrior tailkicker who really just wants to settle down and take care of her daughter. But she's still kiiinda stupid. Which is OK, because sometimes her decisions and awkwardness are funny, as is her internal dialogue. And she has a pretty filly companion that's good with robots. And her Pegafriend is super goofy and funny. And most of the 'bad guys' (It's more of a grey-and-grey in this story's case) have some kind of funny quip or quirk to bring to the table, so it's usually fun when they meet new folk. Even if the new folk just end up dead shortly after. This fic also has explicit graphic violence, references to rape (I don't think there's any actual explicit rape scenes), etc.

5: Fallout Equestria: Project Horizons. This is pretty much "I'll make my own Fallout: Equestria! With Blackjack! And hookers!" Imagine if Fallout: Equestria had been darker, edgier, bloodier, rape-y-er, sexier, funnier, and longer. And if pretty much every plot point was wrapped in at least two layers of conspiracy. That is this fic. More graphic and longer than everything else in this entire list. It also has about as much humor per two chapters that Pink Eyes would have in one. Which still means it's pretty packed with funny even when it's not designed around a character who's entire scenario is funny. It's good stuff when it's silly, but I'd only recommend it if extreme violence and rape are things one can deal with in fiction with ease. If only wanting to try the story without reading the whole massive thing, I recommend Chapter 9: Stone. It makes for an exceptionally strong standalone tale that explains most of what the reader needs to know about the characters and scenario right at the get-go, while being early enough as to not spoil any of the later major plot points.
