Site Post » Character Changes in Action · 4:32pm Apr 11th, 2012
Judging by the response in the previous post, the vast majority of people were extremely positive about the character changes we suggested. Consequently, I've gone ahead and implemented them on the site. Right now there are 2 group tags, main 6 and CMC. For existing stories we've changed everything that had all main 6 characters selected to use the main 6 tag, and everything that had all the CMC selected to use the CMC tag.
This still leaves us with 1,972 stories with over 5 characters. We haven't quite decided what to do with them yet but we'll let you know when we do.
Those are the 2 new tags. Please use them. :)
I think you should change them back... why do you hate auther freedom?
Awesome! This will really help me on my searches
67276 How are your pants today? Itchy?
I'm going to go test out the search engine now.
WOOT
I will use
I think this change is disgusting. My fanfiction (rated 4.3 stars on EqD) mentions SEVERAL characters by name, and you're telling me I can't tag these because you want to be some sort of arbiter of organisation? This is power gone mad, and I suggest we all leave ponywords.web for greener pastures without moderators who feel the need to micromanage everything we do.

Lol Poultron, keep on trollin', trollin'
Anywho, thanks for the change Knighty. It will absolutely make my life a bit easier when I wanna find fics with certain chars. And since that was the whole point mission accomplished.
Not liking this too much. My big fic is, well, epic and does feature a lot of characters. Trimming it down is... kinda painful. And hard to boot.
67288
that's the idea, it ought to make you rethink who is important in your story
67288
You need to remember, these changes are for READERS. Noone cares if a character features in your story, it's whether they feature enough that the people looking for that character actually get a story about that character.
67282
I could go on a huge rant about what you just said that would eventually go into religion, politics, and the great pumpkin but i feel as if coming close to you is going to give me turbitchilosus. SO good day.
I love this idea. Also, I think you should add tags for Trollestia and Rule 63. I've seen more than a few fics with the rule63 ponies, so I think a tag there is in order. And trollestia is such a different enity than Canon Celestia, so I think that would be a good idea as well.

sigh

Or you could be trolling. If that's the case i give you these three choices

I would still like to see an "Everypony" or "Ensemble" tag to indicate stories with huge casts. That might satisfy the people who are unable to choose, as well as providing another point of reference for readers when choosing a story. But for now, I see no reason not to highly approve of this change.

Add a different application to submit it, please.
Long story: 10 Characters
Short story: 5 characters
When they are submitted, and you review them; they can be decided if it's going to be a long story or a short one, like in the first chapter, they say long story, or if they get to chapter 10, they have the choice to add more charcters as main cast.
I like the change, but a 5 character maximum is too low, especially for longer stories. Even with the Mane 6 and CMC tags.

Tell that to fanfiction.net
67314
Perhaps you could suggest a different course of action or a different number we could restrict it to, along with explaining your reasoning? Simply telling us you disagree is not very helpful, as we discussed this for quite some time.
67316>>67317
Thank you.
This does cut down a lot of clutter.
How you do you think it will be before Lucefudu makes a fic about this?
67314
You're not supposed to use the character tags to tag literally every character who pops up for a few lines in your story, you're meant to use it to tag who the story is about.
So if I want to read a story about Pinkie Pie, I can select 'Pinkie Pie' in the search list and be met with a big list of stories about Pinkie Pie.
Currently if I do that, I'll be met with a big list of stories about Big Mac kissing Fluttershy, in which Pinkie Pie wanders by to say hello for a paragraph.
Re: the stories with too many tags currently, I'd suggest just wiping the tags and auto-emailing everyone whose story's are affected to go readd the tags.
Well one of my stories right now (even with the cutie mark crusaders tag) is six tags. All of the character are important and all feature throughout. I think five is too little and maybe should be bumped up to around eight or ten.
EDIT: In fact my other story which I've finished is six tags. All characters have a fairly important role and have a fair amount of dialogue. I made sure not to include Pinkie because she said literally two things. It's sad that people will add characters with little dialogue but people who make stories with a lot of characters shouldn't suffer.
67319
Considering my HUGE story coming up, I will need multiple tags, as EVERY pony will be a min character. I am planning on 250 chapters from everypony's view.
67317
The easiest way to solve the issue would be with more group tags like Mane 6 and CMC. However, I still believe that a 5 character tag limit is a little too restrictive, especially with longer stories. 10 would be more reasonable.
Maybe an option when creating a story to choose whether it is going to be a long (multi-chapter) or short one, with appropriate character-tag limits for each.
edit: Before anyone asks, I personally believe that anything over 5 chapters would be considered a "long" story.
edit 2: Ooh, IDEA!!! Maybe shipping tags for common pairings as well. i.e.: Lyra x Bon Bon, Derpy x Doctor Whooves.
I think that the limit should be extended to 10. Besides that, I'm all for this.
Okay, instead of completely disallowing more than five character tags, you could instead create two columns of character tags, one for main characters (still restricted to five) and the other for supporting characters, which would not have a limit.
The only problem I see with doing this is that this might make the search engine a bit complicated, if there is even a need to be able to search for supporting characters at all, that is.
67332
Ditzy X Doctor whooves is a good ship.
I agree with 10 as a limit.
67338 this seems interesting. As for complicated search I think when you see the story and notice the character you want is just supporting you can easily skim past the story without wasting any of your time.
67338
Yes. You realised in the 2nd sentence. There is no point at all.
As I'm trying to explain, the character system is there for readers. Not authors.
I'm tending to lean towards 10 rather than 5, if only for the fact that Substitute Harmony is just that awesome. ...no, I mean it. Someone who has read it just TRY and trim that tag list down to five. The best I could do was trim off Celestia, Luna, Spike, and swap the Mane 6 tag for Pinkie. (And yes, Blueblood is there for a very good, very SPOILER-y reason.)
Yes, I agree that trimming the fat is something the Tag system needs, but BG Pony-centric fics are Tag-heavy by nature. My vote is for 10.
A Wonderbolt tag! Nice! I didn't notice until just now.
Well, a way to start dealing with the problem would be to give the authors of stories in violation an automated notification (say via PM) and see how that works out.

Great idea and all but i notice when i tried looking for stories with a specfic main 6 charcter (and therefore i assume the same with the CMC) that it didn't bring up any with the main 6 tag seems a tad bit counter-productive if im ok with the other 5 (or 2 int eh CMC case) being in the story that is what the exclude choice is for afterall
I actually really like this. I think imma go rework my tags now, just for gihts 'n siggles.
I think I recall seeing this in the previous blog, but correct me if I'm wrong. If all of the Mane 6 are there in a major role, you use that tag, and if one of them is a main character(ie it's from their perspective, it's a shipping story, etc.) you can put that character down as separate tags, correct?
Also, I recall reading suggestions for an Apple family tag, Princesses tag, etc. I like that idea, but I understand if right now you want to take it slow, not alienante those agianst this change too much. But it maybe something to keep in mind.
Just wanna say, I fully support this. Great idea! Do you know how hard it was trying to find Twipie with the old system?
I really like this idea! It will definitely help readers get what they want, and for the authors, myself included, just suck it up and choose your most important characters; I just did, it wasn't hard.
I think 8 characters is the sweet spot. Enough space, with just a little more.
And about the whole idea: I can not say how much I like it. I hope I can now find shipfics with the ponies I'd like more easily. That's really a problem now.
EDIT: One thing though: Maybe it's a good idea that if one searches for a story with one of the mane 6 in it, to also include the stories with all of the mane 6 in it in the search results.
Ditzy/Derpy family tag?
You know, Ditzy, Dinky, Sparkler.
"Main"? "MAIN"!? Words cannot explain the disappointment the pun fandom is feeling right now.
I do believe it'll be useful, though.

Sorry, but you already devalued your statement by suggesting that you're right, because your story got a high rating on EqD.
And it's kind of ironic that you're calling out the moderators here for things that the mods of EqD are doing much worse.
Edit: *Looks at profile, only see clopfics.
Fuck, trolled...
First, I think the group character tags are a fantastic idea, and very helpful in separating stories where the main six or CMC do things as a group and those where only one or two of them are important.
Second, I think a touch of clarification on what warrants tagging as a character is needed. Right now, with the grouped tags, I have two stories sitting at 8 tags each, but all of them (except Spike) kinda have equal reason for being there. This is especially relevant for long adventure stories with ensemble casts, and stories where a character that's important to the plot may only have a very brief appearance. Is the character tag section A. just for viewpoint characters that the reader sees the story through, or are members of the viewpoint character(s)'s "party" for most of the story, or B. for those characters plus characters that get very little time in the spotlight, but are critical to the plot (e.g. central villains or walking plot points who are discussed throughout the story, but only really feature in one or two chapters)? For example, a story might concentrate on the adventures of the main six and their quest to defeat an overarching villain, but they might have one or two side characters join their party along the way for a significant length of time, and have a recurring "mentor" character like Zecora who pops in from time to time with very few lines, but drastically changes the direction of the story every time they show up, and then they have a secondary villain crossing their path now and then, who again doesn't get much screentime but at the same time they can't afford to ignore, you might have a second plot thread with the CMC, and very quickly you've got seven character tags. I'm not talking about "oh Twilight has an inconsequential conversation with Lyra", it's more things like "Derpy shows up halfway through and follows them to the end of the story" and "Zecora shows up and guides them through the temple of doom before donning a hat and revealing that she's the King Zebra before being promptly defeated".
Simply put, should secondary characters be tagged?
if (Tags == Rarity, AppleJack, Twilight, Fluttershy, RDash, PPie)
{
RemoveTags(Rarity, AppleJack, Twilight, Fluttershy, RDash, PPie);
AddTags(Mane6);
}

How it works: if someone that is searching for stories about a specific character, are they present enough in your story for them to want to read it? If so, tag that character. If not, do not tag them.
67445 Ah, but that definition is highly subjective. What one person thinks is significant involvement might not be what someone else thinks is. Personally I'm leaning on the more inclusive side, but that puts two out of my three stories over the tag limit.
I'd say bump it up to 10 tags, but I like this idea.
Yay! New tags look cool! :D
7-8 is PLENTY. If you have main characters beyond that.... then either you are mistaken about what constitutes a "main" character or your story has other problems.
I suggest increasing the limit to 8 and/or allowing exceptions by author's request on a case-by-case basis. That would have the desired effect as well as not throttling authors that legitimately need more tags, as few and far between as they may be.
and thus, Arthur freedom has ended. i hope you moderaters are proud of yourselfs.
at least readers won't whine about a "busted" screah system...
but at what cost? what cost?
