Just finished Equestria Girls... · 11:51pm Sep 2nd, 2013

Okay, just finished watching the DVD. My thoughts...

It's not bad. Good... yes. Quite good. Verging on very good, but not great. Two things that really drag it down for me:

1. Spike as a dog. No. That pisses me off. No if's, ands or buts about it. He gets little enough respect in the show, especially season three. Why he couldn't have been a young kid, especially with Snips, Snails and the CMC there is legit beyond me.

2. Flash Sentry. He's... bland. To put it mildly. I got nothing from him. Still Twixie for life for me. :D

But other than that... factored into the show, it's above average. I liked the cameos. I loved Trixie being there. :D Twilight's awkwardness and all that. Sunset Shimmer's not too shabby of a villain.

Now, for the question no one cares about... ;)

Will Sunset Shimmer appear in the Hasbroverse?

... Maybe. I'm not going to shoehorn her in for the hell of it, buit if the opportunity presents itself, then yeah. Of course, Twilight won't be nearly as off in Canterlot High. :p And no wings for her either... and that is a WHOLE other kettle of fish I'm not getting into.

Admittedly, I had an insane idea of Sunset being Danielle's classmate at high school before Danielle graduated, the odd skin colors being handwaved as simply there to help the younger audience to tell who's who.

I agree with you about Flash, but he still does have a somewhat distinct personality which more than we can say about some of the more beloved ponies in the fandom. With Spike, yeah sorry but I would have to disagree with you on that, I have my reasons which I like to think are legitimate and I do know many will disagree with them.

I would say if you can get it to work, try to make Sunset (or what ever she will call herself on the human side of the Looking Glass) Danielle's classmate.

Why Spike wasn't made into a kid should be obvious - he's not a pony.

Besides, what's wrong with being a dog? I like dogs!

In Flash's defense, just how much character development can you get in 72 minutes without making it seem like he's trying to steal the show?

Not going to argue about dog!Spike.

1. Spike as a dog. No. That pisses me off. No if's, ands or buts about it. He gets little enough respect in the show, especially season three. Why he couldn't have been a young kid, especially with Snips, Snails and the CMC there is legit beyond me. You have no idea how much it pisses me off.

Personally, in regards to Spike being a dog, I just didn't care. Sure, he's gotten a lot of bad treatment, but since it wasn't anything like "Spike At Your Service" I had no reason to complain. Especially since he was actually an intelligent character.

Though something to consider - Given it was ponies became humans, you can fairly easily justify that Spike, given he's actually a dragon and therefore definitely not a pony on a physical/genetic level, could become something else. With that in mind, what would you prefer him to be? A dog that can talk? A fish? Something much worse, and not capable of speech? Bear in mind I'm not trying to force you to see things from my point of view, just consider that maybe you shouldn't be quite as angry given what could have happened. That's the only reason I was able to actually watch through episodes like Flutter On and Magic Duel - I just figured they could be significantly worse than they were, rather than forcing myself to think of them as great episodes or anything.

It does, however, make the movie a *snicker* "Dog and Pony Show."

Flash Sentry = Shining Armor. Yes, Twilight was attracted to her brother's "other."

Nothing wrong with that, in my opinion. Of course she'd be attracted to anypony like her BBBFF. And Flash, despite being "cool," was charmingly awkward around Twilight.

Thought: despite human Pinkie Pie's "do you have a twin sister in town" monologue at Twilight, I don't see a need for a Twilight-analog in the Canterlot High universe. She's already there: her name is Sunset Shimmer.

I have no idea if there will be more Equestria Girls stories, but I could imagine a story arc about the school bully, Sunset, trying to reform her ways. It will be hard! Nopony (slap!) nobody will want to trust her. Except, of course, the rest of the Mane Six, who will gently draw her back into the community.

I can imagine a climatic Equestria Girls episode, in which Sunset again takes the crown of Prom Queen. Only, this time, she's genuinely grateful. Thank you! Thank you all, she weeps.

And, a few moons later, in the middle of the night, the portal to Equestria opens. Sunset considers it. She tosses in a few treats (a book of poetry for Celestia, a Ponystation for Luna, rock candy for Spike and her human diary for Twilight) and walks away.

My place is here, she thinks. At last, my place is here.

1324478 If there isn't any more Equestria Girls, which I imagine is likely, that could be a great fanfiction.

I liked Equestria Girls. And I really liked Flash. You should check out my blog on it.

I guess I could see Sunset Shimmer as Danielle's classmate in the Hasbroverse, but it might be important to explain what she's doing there unless it's just a cameo of sorts.

Agreed with you on Flash. Guy has as much dimension to him as a cardboard cut-out. It feels like he was just shoehorned into the movie just for the sake of having some semblance of "romance" in one of the most cliched and overused settings ever: high school. Hate the guy and hope he never appears again (whether it be in human or pony form) since every scene he was in just felt so forced and awkward that it made me cringe.

As for Spike being a dog, I'm rather neutral on that. Yes, he could have been given a better form in the new world but despite that, Spike still stole the movie for me.

I have seen the argument put forth that Spike needed to be a dog so that Twilight could go "Hey, check out my talking dog" and prove that she's not crazy.

1324478

I would love for that to happen if there was a show. Also, to see how Griffins and Zerbras are treated in this world. I noticed a lack of Zecora in this.

1324808>>1324677>>1324416

I think Spike was a dog, and this might seem stupid, but remember it was supposed to have some Wizard of Oz connotations, so I guess he was a dog just so we can have, "and your little dog too" joke. That's all I got

As for Flash, I admit he had a flat personality (but he is so much fun to make a butt monkey in a sketch); however, he didn't deter it for me. I guess I was treatng him like I did the jock guy in Lizzie Mcguire, any romantic guy in that's so Raven (was there one?), Josh Mankey in Kim, and the guy character in Pepper Ann (god have I watched a lot of shows.)

I also should mentioned that I LOVED AJ in this movie. She isn't usually my fave but the gal was lifting up tables alone, biting bottle caps off of bottles like no prob, and was acting like the farm gal we know and love.

Though I wonder, why was Friend for life on the end credits and not somewhere else on the show? The song just felt out of place for me on this movie.

1324890 Which song? Because "Helping Twilight Win the Crown" is like one of the best things to come out of this! :pinkiehappy:

1324381 She could be called Sunny! :pinkiehappy: That's a human name. Not suspicious at all.

1324478
Um... you do know that we did see Flash's pony self. So he really isn't Shining's human self
1325852
She could keep Sunset Shimmer and claim that her parents were hippies or something

1325858 True also. That could work as well. And I believe what Cloud Wander meant was that Flash Sentry is very similar in nature to Shining Armor hence why Twilight might feel some sort of affinity towards him.

1325846

Oh I love "Helping Twilight win the crown", I was referring to "friend for life" that pops up durning the end credits. I just feel like that song feels like it belongs on a different MLP film than this and checking the lyrics, I feel this way even more. The way the lyrics sound, feel more like they belong on Journey of the spark then here

1325866
Names are the lest of the issues of including Sunset into the Hasbroverse, but if RK can do it, and I think he can, then it will interesting to see.
People though Flash was Shining before EqG came out.

1325866
Yes, exactly. Sorry I wasn't clear. :derpyderp1: The names are very similar (much like Twilight Sparkle and Sunset Shimmer).

Sunset as Danielle's classmate? That'd be an awesome idea! :pinkiehappy:
Perhaps her human name can be Susan Shelby.

I think Twilight and Flash Sentry make a cute couple, even if Lauren Faust's rule clearly states that there'll be no romance among the Mane Six (at least in-show).

Also I don't mind Spike being a dog. At least he has the privilege of being smothered by Rarity. ^_^

I was actually ok with dogSpike. Mainly because dogs are the animal used to represent loyalty, and that is, in my opinion, one of Spike's most dominant features. As such, if it wasn't for the rest of the team being Discorded I have a headcanon that Spike could have replaced Dash as Loyalty in the rainbow beam of fix everything. Will agree with him not getting nearly the respect he deserves in show proper though.
Flash. Flash was ok. About as good as I could expect from a character in his position who has, as mentioned by Nealend86, no time for character development. My main issue with him is that I have trouble seeing Twilight with anyone not at least a decent amount bookish. And Flash wasn't bookish at all.
