    Fragments From The Archives

Hey folks! It’s been a while. I hope everyone’s doing well over here.

I was going through some old files, and I found a bunch of unfinished stories I was working on, way back when. I’ve posted three of them in my scrapfile for whoever's interested.

New Holiday Story: Where The Heart Is

I've posted a new story about going home for the holidays. You won't see it in your feed, because the mods in their infinite wisdom have decreed that sufficiently short stories aren't actually stories, so this blog is to let you know that it's available in my

Help Me, And Win A Free Commission

Thanks to Chris, I've been thinking about writing style recently. What is a style? Do I have one? Do I have more than one? How can I tell? “Thinking really hard about these questions” doesn't seem like a good way to get answers, since my most common problem as a writer is that I don't communicate the ideas I mean to communicate.

So, that was pretty great.

The highlight was definitely seeing a bunch of the prereaders who I've known for years but never actually met in meatspace. There were also plenty of chances to meet other horse words authors (thanks largely to Applejinx's efforts), which was a very pleasant surprise. There were people whose work I admired, people who I was sort of familiar with, and people who I just learned about. I got to spend the whole weekend talking about horsefic, and my reading list just about doubled. I'm not even gonna try to do the thing where I list all the cool people I met. Instead, have an incomplete listing of my impressions:

Couch confirmed for nicest human.
Aqua confirmed for best drunk.
—The EqD prereader panel was a lot of fun, and I think we were useful to some folks. For those of you who weren't at the panel but have questions for us: there's a two-thirds chance the answer is “email us and ask.” Confused by your rejection letter? Email us and ask. Thinking of becoming a prereader? Email us and ask. Feel your story was rejected for bad reasons? Not sure if your idea falls within our content guidelines? Wondering how much the problems in the first chapter will hurt your 200,000-word fic? Email us and ask.
I mean, we're not scary. We spend our spare time reading fanfiction.
Bad Horse talks like his blog posts. He doesn't just converse; he extemporizes miniature essays.
The Descendant is the most wholesome person I have ever met.
—I am really glad that someone like Vicodin exists.
Applejinx and Bad Horse look eerily similar. Separated at birth?
kits is the only person who looked and acted exactly how I expected.
—Stars above, this fandom makes me feel old. Everyone is nineteen.

C:

Grinning like an idiot right now. It was fun to see you at the con, dude!

When is a recording of the PR panel going to be posted to Youtube?

I'm 23. :<

And I'm.... nice? I have no idea how I earned that assessment, but I'll take it!

Dude you were nice as fuck at the con. It was almost adorable.

I'm 19 :<

No alcohol for me.

—I am really glad that someone like Vicodin exists.

Yes, and

—The Descendant is the most wholesome person I have ever met.

Yes.

"Wholesome", that's perfect.

Also, Present confirmed for not existing. :| I need to be more social.

So damn jealous. I am giving serious thought to attending next year, if only to meet all you authors.

Good question. I don't even know who did the recording. Couch might or might not know; he seemed to have some idea what was going on, usually.

Dude come on

I'm not even gonna try to do the thing where I list all the cool people I met.

But in all seriousness, if you want to be noteworthy, you need either a more noteworthy beard like TD, or a more noteworthy lack of a beard like Obs.

Do it.

Yeah... I tend to surprise folks with how I look.

And I'm not nice, dammit.

Compared to anyone but Descendant, it was pretty great. (This is frequently how I feel about my stories, as well.)

Um, I'm commenting again 'cause I forget what a self-centered prick I can be sometimes.

Ben, meeting you in person was amazing. I didn't get to talk with you much, but you struck me as an incredibly down-to-earth guy who also knows how to write good pony. I dunno if you remember the time we decided to do the Mane 6 as pirates and you kicked off the first chapter, but having read that a long time ago I should have foreseen your awesomeness beforehand.

That comparison is acceptable, yes.

Also I am seconding this, Ben.
