Equestria Girls review (Spoilers) · 7:38pm Jul 13th, 2013
Hey guys. Well, it's that, time, huh? I finally went to my local movie theater and forked over seven dollars of my hard earned cash to watch Equestria Girls. So, what did I think? Well, stay tuned to find out.
Going into this, I wasn't expecting much. Granted, I wasn't one of the many who were against the idea, but I wasn't necessarily for it either. Well, I am happy to say that I was pleasently surprised.
So, let's start with the plot, shall we? Basically, Twilight, who is now a princess herself, ends up getting her crown stolen from a unicorn named Sunset Shimmer, who is Princess Celestia's former student. Shimmer then runs through a random, convieniently placed portal in some random room in the castle. Celestia then informs Twilight that she must get the crown back, for it contains great power that could destroy the other world. Obeying Celestia, Twilight (and Spike) jump through the portal, which turns out leads to a world inhabited by....er...two-legged creatures with fingers and neon colored skin. She soon learns that in order to get her crown back, she must become the princess of the prom. However, it turns out that Sunset Shimmer has won several years before that. Will Twilight win the title and prevail? ....Probably.

I'm just going to say this, don't go into this movie expecting the plot to be amazing. For me, I'd say that it gets the job done. There are quite a lot of plot holes, and such. For example, why doesn't Twilight just take the crown? I mean, sure, stealing is bad and such, but you're talking about the fate of an entire world here, I think you can steal something in that situation. Also, Sunset Shimmer's plan...at the film's climax, after using the crown to turn into a giant demon-princess, (which admittedly was pretty cool) Shimmer brain washes all the students of the school into obeying her, before revealing her plan to take over Equestria....using an army of teenagers....what? And the way Twilight defeats her...I guess she uses magic or something, and the friends go all Power Rangers on them and grow ears and wings and and tails...yeah, it was weird. Oh, and the romance in this movie...yeesh. So yes, Twilight finally gets a love interest in this movie, and...well, it wasn't as terrible as most people say it is. But they really could've pulled it off better. I mean, the guy is pretty much what you'd expect. Doesn't talk much, bland, does everything a teenage girl could ask for, you get the deal. What I did like was that they didn't end up together at the end. They just left the guy as a shy crush that Twilight had, which I think was the right thing to do. Finally, I really think that the story was kinda rushed. I mean, seriously, it only takes about ten minutes before Twilight reaches the other world. So, like I said, the plot has it's problems, but it gets the job done.
Now, let's talk about the music. Sad to say, but with the exception of one song, most of the songs are forgettable. However, I will say that Helping Twilight Win The Crown is now one of my favorite songs in the series. Other than that, the music was somewhat disappointing.
Moving on to comedy, I think it was spot on in this movie. Seriously, I was almost dying of laughter at certain jokes. Also, they also had a lot of shout outs to fans, most notably Scootaloo dancing to the chicken, Trixie demanding a vending machine give her snacks, and an appearence by a certain fan-favorite character appearing in the credits.
Overall, I really enjoyed Equestria Girls. It was flawed, but very entertaining nonetheless. And hey, maybe this will open the doors to the big MLP theatrical release that we've been waiting for. I'd give it an 8/10.
Oh, by the way, since I watch movies a lot, do you guys want me to do more reviews? Let me know in the comments.
