Of Broken Bones... · 9:43pm Apr 30th, 2013
So my darling fiance broke his arm today. (Warning: the link is nsfw) And to make matters worst, it was his dominant hand. So drawing is out of the question, and doing just about anything else is nothing but all different kinds of difficult!
So, our of curiosity and to better understand what it’s like to lose the use of a dominant hand for a while, I tried doing things with my left hand.
I tried typing with my non dominant left hand….gave that up very quickly, and here’s why:
I tried using my wacom pen (which I use as my mouse), then just using my laptop touch pad to go through my e-mail and business stuff. It took me twice as long, and not so much for the fact that it was not my dominant hand, but that I suddenly kept forgetting where things were and it took me twice as long to figure out what I was looking at…
That threw me for a loop.
So I decided to try drawing and see how that came out…
^ This is what it looks like when I draw with my dominant right hand…
^This is what it looks like when I draw with my non-dominant left hand…
So you can imagine that he’s not very happy right now, aside from being in pain. Give him your well wishes! And remember how quickly things can change, and enjoy what you have at the moment!
And if you have any ideas of things someone can do when their dominant hand is broken, we’d like to hear it!
I wish him a speedy recovery. I've never had a broken arm or any kind bone broken, but I can understand the pain the annoyance quite well
That stinks so much! Tell him we'll miss his beautiful art while he's healing.
For me, when I use my non-dominant hand, it's not so much the finding stuff that's the problem, it's that my non-dominant hand starts to hurt. So I hope that doesn't happen to him.
As to what he could do while laid up. . . other than reading, and laying back and letting other people entertain him (a perfectly valid option), he could try
his hand atpodcasting. Just come up with a subject and record his thoughts. He has a large enough audience that people would listen to him go on about whatever he was interested in, and it could be fun.Oh no! Here's hoping for a speedy recovery for him! Wish I had any advice; when my brother broke his arm he was lucky enough to break the non-dominant arm. You must cover his cast with drawings of ponies.
Give Rat a big huge hug that doesn't hit his bad arm from all of us!
Tell him that we all wish him the best. Of course, I'm being selfish because I'll just miss his art.
Just kidding, of course. Really, though, I wish him a speedy recovery; broken bones are at the bottom of my "fun things to have" list.
Well look on the bright side...hes got an awesome cast to collect signatures on now! :D
I definitely wish him a fast recovery, but then we all know it takes bones time to knit. How serious of a break was it?
He could start learning to write and draw with his left hand – he's already got the artistic skills, now he just needs to re-learn the controls. ;) It might be frustrating, but I'd bet he could do well in a relatively short time, and he might just pick up some stylistic additions along the way; the different sides of the brain act in different ways...
Edit: Cute drawing, by the way.

There's a huge warning on the top of the tumblr page before you scroll down...
And thank you all for the wishes. <3
1045026 I've never had a broken bone O.o But I've had bad sprains, and I understand the frustration of not being able to do anything with it. Thanks for the well wishes.
1045035 Ah, yes, the hurting! My hand was starting to hurt while I was trying to draw! That's why I didn't outline it! And he wouldn't do podcasting - he doesn't even like to talk on his livestreams ^_^; But it is a good idea! I never would have never thought of it.
1045041 I wish I could! But we're in two different countries at the moment, leading to a helpless feeling on my part. More frustrating.
1045054 As mentioned in the comment above, I'm oceans away from him at the moment and I can't physically hug him ;_; And unfortunately, even if I could, I would probably end up hitting his bad arm. It's what happened last time.
1045404 Well, I felt bad that on top of worrying for my fiance when I could do nothing to help him, and going through the range of emotions of panic, fear, worry, and sadness, that I didn't even think about posting that it's nsfw. Now I'm just frustrated. Because what he says is true - there is a huge warning. I'll fix it, though. I'm usually more careful about that. But like I said - my mind is not in the right place today. Sorry.
1045447 Serious enough that he will need surgery to fix it, and he doesn't know the true extent of the damage yet. It's really worrisome. He has pictures on his Tumblr...and since this was an issue before - warning, the link above it's not safe for work. And he;ll probably try to draw with his other hand - though even my hand got tired to draw that scribble up there! And thanks ^_^
1045573 I felt like I should reply to you, too, despite knowing that you'll probably read this over anyways ^_~
1045666 i did not mean to come out as being negative, i simply meant make a statement without adding any emotion to it. i just listed off the two things that where worth commenting on to me. so yeah the whole no warning thing and the whole thing about your drawing being better then mine still. i can see how the format i used could be associated with anger, but would like to let you know i meant no negativity towards you or your significant other. sorry!
