That's basically the idea in my head. I thought about commissioning someone on Deviantart around my birthday, but alas... no Paypal, and no one does anything for free these days.
You might find someone to do it for free. It helps that you put it up on a journal - perhaps someone will gift it for you! And hey, like you mentioned, around your birthday, if you put up a wishlist, you might get something. I mean, writing fanfiction is FREE entertainment for people. Some people enjoy the chance to give back to someone - especially a favorite author on their birthday.
But, you know, also, don't give your hopes up.
