We Writers... · 9:53pm Mar 18th, 2012
Don't ever let someone tell you your dreams are foolish.
Not even yourself.
Don't let anyone bring you down.
Not even yourself.
Never think that just because you're not the best means that your voice isn't worth being heard. We are all united in our dreams. In our wishes for ourselves. We raise our stories up in the hope that they will someday fly. We lift them up hoping that others will help lift them too.
We artists, we authors, together make something special, something greater than the sum of its parts. Soul. Art has soul. A unique spirit not found anywhere else. Soul is what makes art. That is what makes it so special, makes it more than words or paint or a digital file. Art, soulful art can make you laugh, cry, and experience a whole range of emotions. A story is more than just words on a page or screen. A story is a world, recreated over and over every time it's read. It is soul, true soul.
That's why we can never give up, because it's not just words, even though they're our words, it's our soul. Our hopes, our dream. We do not know the outcome
It's true; my story may never gain the fame of Fallout: Equestria, may never be as dark as Project Horizons, elicit such emotion as Pink Eyes, and pave the way for new writers like Heroes, or Wings or any of the other countless stories perforating that niche.
And of course, most recently, Murky Number Seven. It’s only one chapter (a very long, incredibly written chapter) and it’s at the top of the side story post, has an amazing cover, and in what seems less time than it takes to blink is quite literally three times the length of my own. How can I compete? I don’t know, but perhaps my story may just fall within its shadow.
Fire Ghost may never be as eloquent or well thought out, or mysterious, or epic, or captivating as any of these. The despair of that knowledge hangs upon me heavily. When I read someone's story and I think it better written than my own, it's hard to go back and keep writing. What else can I do? What else besides practice my craft and hope that someday patience will make up for the gap in talent.
I just have the hope, that small, slender, fragile thread of possibility that someday Fire Ghost will stand among those giants. Not through arrogance do I believe it's worthy. I'll only know that once it is written.
It is hope that lifts us up, hope in the face of overwhelming adversity, against all evidence, all reason or rationale to the contrary. It is that irrationality, that defiance of reason that makes us writers, dreamers, and makers. We dare to fantasize and hope against those odds.
And so we write, and pour ourselves into our writing, our characters, our setting, and our desires. That is fan-fiction at its core. Desire. The want to change something, or add something of our own twist, our own flavor. Every story is a window of desire.
I do not know what path Fire Ghost will truly take when all is said and done, whether it shall be completed, or someday lay dead and forgotten in the dust. Whether its title was portentous or not.
I can only write, and write, and write, and write, and write.
And hope. Always, hope.
Also, on a slighter lighter note, chapter 6 should be out tomorrow! I just really needed to get this out of my system, and thank you to those who read this.
