Shipping Ponies, and my love of them · 3:01am Feb 28th, 2012

In the world that is Equestria, there is a vast, and powerful navy, filled with ships. Those ships... are ponies.

Ok, yeah, sorry, sounded better in my head, but lets get on with this. Now, at first I was going to put down my "Top XX ships", but then I realized that if I were to do that, then I would come back in a few days, and say something along the lines of "HOW DID I MISS THIS ONE!?". Instead, I'm just going to list a bunch of various ships that I enjoy, why, and some other things about them. Why? because I'm a completely insane idiot who uses MLP as an Anger Management tool. I'm going to keep the larger descriptions to the mane 6

PS: most of these are derived from fictions... DUH!
PPS: I know some of these have actual names, but for the sake of clarity, I'm posting full names... so sue me!

-Rainbow/Fluttershy: We'll start out with my favorite one. Now, if you were to ask me WHY this was my favorite, I wouldn't be able to come up with a single answer. But if I had to try, I would say just the way the two (especially Fluttershy) are always so freakin' adorable. There's something about these two that allows the author to let them feed off of each other. Rainbow is this brash, short tempered, and impulsive pony, while Fluttershy is this calm, quiet, and gentle pony. If they were to get together, I could see Rainbow toning it down (at least for Fluttershy), and I could see Fluttershy open up so much more, and become much more assertive. The two being old filly-friends just makes it more cute, with it being a story of "two best friends finally realizing they love each other". The best evidence of this in the show (if ships even existed in it, which they don't) would have to be the Flim Flam brothers episode in the very beginning. Seriously, Rainbow had no reason to get Fluttershy, and ever reason to not. Getting her would make her get in line that much later, and maybe not get any. Instead, she makes a huge detour, gets Fluttershy, and flies to the stand with her. If that isn't Rainbow feeling for a pony, I don't know what is!

-Twilight/Pinkie: Don't ask me why, but this ship is absolutely adorable. Here's how I could see it happening: Pinkie has feelings for Twilight, but Twilight only sees Pinkie as a friend and an anomoly (Pinkie Sense). Twilight tries to "study" Pinkie, which SOMEHOW (still working on this part) leads to Twilight finding out about Pinkie's feelings, and instead of freaking out, she decides "hey, why not!?", and tries the ship. In reality, these two personalities would NEVER get together, but still, the idea of a complete extrovert getting together with a complete introvert just makes me smile. If this relationship were to happen... then I don't even know how it would work... seriously. In the show, honestly, there isn't really any evidence at all of this. The only possible connection is... wait... nope. Nothing.

-Rarity/Applejack: I don't know why, but while I HATE this ship, so many authors are out there who write this one so damn well, that I am forced to say that I approve of it. I just think that the whole "country bumpkin" and the "elite fashionista" getting together would make absolutely zero sense in the end. Applejack would much rather go after a pony like Rainbow or somepony: one that could keep up with her. Rarity would go for a pony that is... well... DIGNIFIED! Hell, the only reason Rarity wanted Blueblood was because she wanted a unicorn with class and sophistication... something I'm certain Applejack lacks. In the show, the only example of this actually happening would be the sleepover, where while the two were so very damn different, they came together, and found that even two vastly different ponies could become best friends (and more). But like I said... wouldn't happen.

-Pinkie/Rarity: Even less likely than the previous, but I absolutely LOVE this ship, and I have no idea. Sadly, I also never see it ever written about at all (one, maybe two stories had this that I've read), which might be part of the reason why I love it so much. I think its their personalities, and how they would mesh together hoenstly. Pinkie is a spastic pony with absolutely no class, while Rarity is a refined, dignified pony, who has nothing if not class. Together, Pinkie would probably mellow (slightly), and Rarity would loosen up. Now, I admit right here, right now that the whole reason why I love this ship is the same damn reason why I hate Applejack/Rarity, and I'm not sure why. Maybe because this one is never so prolific, and maybe because Pinkie is the best pony. Not sure. In the show... I don't think these two characters have EVER interacted with each other... ever...

-Rarity/Spike: "Hey! You said you'd keep it in the mane 6!" Yes I did, but this is my blog, so shut yo face. That said, I am surprised that this ship isn't done more. Is it done? Yes, but of all the shippings, this is the one that I think has the most evidence in the show. I mean, Spike is completely head over heels for her, and in "Secret of My Excess," unless Rarity is a fool, she knows, and at least cares in some way for Spike, though it could always be just as a friend. That said, I find it adorable, yet sad. Adorable because while Rarity wants the "stallion of her dreams", Spike is, obviously, not a stallion, but her loving him would be something from the heart, not a fantasy. At the same time, its sad, because if we are going by the idea that Spike is going to live as long as dragons in other fictions, then he is going to outlive Rarity by hundreds or thousands of years. Oh, and if I need to point out evidence of this ship, I'm going to hit you with a stick.

Some others that are notable, but I'm too lazy now to type out long descriptions...

- Rainbow/Twilight: Done too much, and not as remarkable as others.
- Celestia/Discord: No... just... no...
- Celestia (or Luna)/Anypony else: Eh, i'm indifferent, though kinda the same as Rarity/Spike in sad.
- BigMac/Anypony: I'm numb to it now. Big Mac is a character that is a blank slate, so he goes with anyone, and I've lost interest
- Scoot/Sweet: Two fillies I know, but I love Sweetie, and I love Scoot, and they are adorable together for the same reasons Fluttershy and Rainbow are
- Spike/Any CMC: Honestly, I'm ok with this. Kinda a mix of Rarity/Spike and Scoot/Sweet in flavor, and I like it...
- Applejack/Rainbow: too overdone, too predictable, moving on.
- Applejack/Any of the Apple family: Ew
- Derpy/Doctor Hooves: How the hell did this one even start!? Honestly!? I'm neutral with the exception of the utter confusion
- Lyra/Bon Bon: Any story that has these two NOT together is dead to me
- Rarity/Tom: Second only to Fluttershy/Rainbow
- Human/Anypony: ...too awkward to make me enjoy
- Self Insert/Anypony: ... ew... just... wow... no lie, that's really creepy...
- Self Insert/Anypony clopfic: ... Oh my... do me three favors... 1) See a doctor about this condition, 2) Turn yourself into the police, 3) Never interact with me... ever

Obviously there are tons of other ships that I didn't get into, but if I were to name them all, I would be here all night.

So what do you think? Agree? Disagree? Which is your favorite? How did I offend you? Do you wanna kill me?

Also, please accept my shameless advertising of my wonderful and glorious fanfiction. I would love you all forever!

aw.. my favorite ship isn't on here :fluttercry:

The first thing I was going to do this morning was to review your most recent chapter of World of Chaos, which I had yet to review due to being preoccupied with my own writing, however, having recieved the notification of blog comment and discovering your most recent blog entry I decided to give it a quick read and comment first. Then I will go onto reviewing your fanfic...after breakfast.

Rainbow/Fluttershy - You already know that FlutterDash is my favourite pairing, and your points on why the pairing is so likable are ones I agree with. If you look to the majority of fanart of the pairing you will notice that cute is the main thing they strive for, with the majority of pairing pics of these two being them cuddling or sleeping together (in a non-sexual way), while the fanfics tend to be of Rainbow Dash's perspective, with her toning down her brash behaviour for Fluttershy. I love how you also noticed The Super Speedy Cider Squeezy 6000 nods to the pairing, which I found utterly charming (and as I have said in my blog it also helped the pairing in regards to popularity). Quick question though, do you remember which episode (or when) made you support the pairing? While for most people it tends to be the Sonic Rainboom or Cutie Mark Chronicles episode, or recently the Flim Flam Brothers episode, mine was actually Secret of My Excess (my favourite clip being that when Spike goes to strike the two Fluttershy flies in and hugs Rainbow Dash). You don't have to say, particularly if you can't remember, but I'm just curious.

Twilight/Pinkie - It is indeed an adorable if unlikely pairing and I am also quite fond of it. I find that the two could be a couple and while it would be a happy relationship I don't think it would be one to last but then again I think out of all the Mane 6, Twilight Sparkle and Pinkie Pie are the least likely to settle down, with Pinkie Pie generally loving everyone and Twilight Sparkle preferring solitude. Still, if you're looking for evidence of the pairing just go and read 'The Most Powerful Magic' by FicFicPonyFic, in fact go ahead and read it simply because it's funny, a short but enjoyable read.

Rarity/Applejack - I'm not big on this ship but possibly as a result of my love for opposites attract pairings I do not hate it. I guess you could say I like it above average and it's not close to being my least favourite Mane 6 pairing. Personally, though I always see all characters in fiction as being bi until proven otherwise, I tend to see Applejack and Rarity as being strictly straight, with Rarity having shown romantic feelings towards only male characters in the show and with Applejack being the sort who you know would like to start up a family one day (and despite what fanfic writers may think, two girls/two boys cannot reproduce together and writers need to stop doing that). Still, I can see why fans like this pairing, I have seen fanfics write this well, and I have seen many fans use this for a good bit of humour which I'm always for.

Pinkie/Rarity - I'm not the only one, yes! It's rare to see the two characters interacting but when it does happen, Dragonshy and The Last Roundup, the results are hilarious. True the characters don't have much in common, and the pairing is most likely to be exhibited as either friends or as one-sided feelings, but the characters work surprisingly well when put together in a scene, and some affects, such as Rarity loosening up or Pinkie respecting that not all parties have to be loud, noisy or involve cannons, are beneficial to the two characters.

Rarity/Spike - With exception to the married couples of the show this here is the only cannon pairing (it doesn't have to be two sided and they don't have to be together, one loving the other which Spike has shown is enough to prove that the pairing exists within cannon) which is why it's frustrating to see a lack of this pairing. Seriously, there is more writing and art of SpikeXApple Bloom than SpikeXRarity, and I don't think the former have ever even interacted (more on that later). The pairing is sweet, and from the Secret of My Excess episode, not only proven to be more than a crush on Spike's part but also possible for Rarity to share his feelings. I imagine Rarity probably does have feelings for Spike, whose varied personality has consistently shown he can be quite the gentleman, but the two obstacles of his age and species prevent her, knowing that any love between them would be tragic in the end for Spike. My third favourite pairing I would say this is.

Rainbow Dash/Twilight - I can see where people are coming from and while it is overdone it is also a source for a great amount of humour. If Rainbow Dash is not paired with Fluttershy in a fanfic then I prefer her being with Twilight than any other character.

Celestia/Discord - Discordantly by CrappyUnicorn is a comic on Deviantart that explains the pairing quite well, it gives Discord a motive for his insane actions and I generally like the 'if they see me as a monster then I'll become one' line of thought Discord is given. I also like the pairing in how it can offer up both flaws to Celestia's character and make her somewhat interesting but to each their own.

Celestia (or Luna)/Anybody else - Unless they are also immortal or long living then no, I think thousands of years of watching people age and die around them would put them off relationships (in fact it should have either driven them insane or emotionally reclusive by this point).

Big Mac/Anypony - Big Mac is sadly misused in fanfiction, with the great majority twisting his personality simply so he can work better with a pairing. Big Mac pairings can work, and I am fond of Big MacXTwilight, Rarity and Cheerlie stuff; however I consider the others to be average at best and FlutterMac to be way overdone (doesn't help that I despise this pairing as well).

Scootaloo/Sweetie Belle - No opinion on this one, I have literally never spared a thought on this.

Spike/Any CMC - I don't think SpikeBloom works all that well but ScootaSpike and SweetieSpike are usually fun to read and I like both these pairings. With SweetieSpike you have the drama of a love triangle (I tend to prefer it being Sweetie Belle has a crush on Spike scenario) and I have found some good fan work of the stuff such as that artwork Sweetie Dreams by gimpcowking (it's a single, simple piece that will break your heart) and the fanfic 'Pony Tales: Belle Runner' by Andrew Joshua Talon (also hilarious and you get to read Fluttershy quoting Terminator). ScootaSpike there is even less stuff for but the show has said they have interacted (Spike gave Scootaloo the idea of zip lining showing that Spike gets all his cooler moments off screen, seriously, his hobby is zip lining) and the whole 'Spike is Rainbow Dash' does help.

Applejack/Rainbow Dash - Overdone, yes, predictable, yes, dislike, no. I can understand the liking of the pairing even if I don't support it, and while it may be overdone if say, FlutterDash was done to the same extent would I be complaining? No, I would not.

Applejack/Any of the Apple Family - With pairings of incest I differ from most for my line of reasoning. It doesn't matter about the genetics; it's about how they were raised. If for instance, two unrelated characters were raised up together as brother and sister I would consider it objectionable for them to be together more than if a brother and sister who were not brought up together fell in love. It's bizarre and chaotic but hey, love is the greatest chaos there is.

Derpy/Doctor Hooves - Though this is heavily immersed in fanon, the cases where they step away from the whole Doctor Who thing (despite being British I do not like the show or watch it), have been ones I've been able to enjoy the pairing. It can work but as with most of the background characters/barely appeared characters, you're effectively reading about OCs.

Lyra/Bon Bon - They are sitting next to one another, they must be in love! No, but seriously, I have no objection to this pairing nor do I have any reason to support this pairing. When you read about it the same case with Derpy/Doctor Hooves occurs, you are reading about what is effectively two OCs.

Rarity/Tom - Not exactly original, ApplejackXBloomberg (and even FluttershyXBloomberg) came way before it.

Human/Anypony - I avoid Human in Equestria fanfics and as such have never come across a human paired with pony fanfic however, due to the popularity of Dan Vs. Pinkie Pie fanart, I must admit, I do like the idea of DanXPinkie Pie.

Self Insert/Anypony - One of my best friends is in a romantic relationship with Pikachu and she writes it well so I have no reason to object to her pairing. While I would avoid Self Insert/Mane 6 (steps into OCXMane 6 territory, my least favourite pairing of all) and wouldn't approve of the pony falling in love before the self insert falls in love with the pony, if it is written well then what real reason do I have to object.

Self Insert/Anypony clopfic - I dislike clopfics in general. Mentioning and suggesting such things are ok and can usually be funny but actually describing them makes me vomit.

While it would have been nice to have seen your thoughts on the other Mane 6 within Mane 6 pairings, and thus be able to describe my own thoughts on the other Mane 6 within Mane 6 pairings, this was an enjoyable spot of fun. Your longer points of discussion are well structured and your shorter points get straight to the point and tend to have a smidge of humour alongside them. Glad to be able to discuss this with you and I look forward to further communication on this subject. Cheerio!
