the fact that companies are no longer willing to let their customers own anything is exactly the reason why physical media (CDs, vinyl, DVDs, etc.) are so popular now. also piracy. that's also popular for that reason
Publisher: We don't want to support this anymore, costs too much.
Fans: Ok, we'll do it.
Publisher: No. We decided that's illegal, you can't.
What they mean is "We don't want you to enjoy the thing you bought and paid for, we want to force you to buy this new more expensive inferior product."
