Animation Fans: Don't Sleep on This! It could be gone THIS WEEK! · 5:07am March 20th
A 2-D animated film. An original Looney Tunes film. It’s getting almost no marketing. It deserves to be seen.
I grew up watching Looney Tunes on syndicated TV. I’ve loved animation my entire life, and one of my greatest laments is that 2-D animation has all but vanished from movie theaters only to be replaced by a million shty CGI cash grabs with references that will be dated a week after they come out and a slew of mediocre, totally unnecessary Disney remakes.
Case in point: saw a preview for this. The secret lives of shoes trying to get back to their kid.... okay then...
So I was thrilled to hear about this new Looney Tunes movie, The Day the Earth Blew Up. It wasn’t CGI, it wasn’t a needless sequel (lookin’ at you, Space Jam: A New Legacy) and it was actually getting released in theaters. Not only that, they kept it simple: it’s not a self-referential pat on the back about the idea of Looney Tunes... it’s just Daffy Duck and Porky Pig in a contained, stand-alone story. (And also Petunia Pig, now with a real personality!)
It’s the kind of over-the-top, silly, gag-based cartoon humor that defined the genre for generations.
But there’s been almost no advertising for it. WB seems to have no faith in it: it got pulled from streaming and was almost not going to be shown at all before Ketchup decided to distribute it to theaters. By this chance, we all can see it in theaters, and will likely get to own it on DVD/Blu-Ray, unlike the infamously shelved Looney Tunes movie that should have come out before this, Coyote vs ACME, following a lawsuit by Wile E. Coyote against the ACME corporation for all its devices that failed and backfired over the years. You know, the one WB shelved as a tax writeoff and flat-out refused to show anyone on any platform?
Well, here’s the rub of things: I saw the movie and it’s great. It’s incredibly silly, made with love, and laugh-out-loud funny. Even some of the apparent one-off gags come back in surprising ways as relevant plot points. And I’d love to see the people who made it get rewarded for their efforts and see more movies like it get made. If it does well enough, there’s even the possibility that we might get Coyote vs ACME as well. But if it doesn’t make enough money, this may never happen again.
So see it. Please. Bring friends. Bring kids. Encourage family and friends to go see it and bring their kids. After all, MLP isn’t necessarily a gag-based show, but it is another link in the long, historical chain of animation, and it owes its existence to trailblazing works like Looney Tunes. It’d be a shame to leave that legacy behind rather than see it continue and flourish.
That’s all (for now), folks! But I’ve got a new story in the works and I hope to have it out pretty soon. Until, then, take care!
Being shelved as a tax write-off IIRC means it would be illegal for them to finish it. The only way we're getting it is if the US government entirely collapses... which is admittedly a real possibility in the not-so-distant future.
Saw the film. Quite enjoyed it. Got a trailer for the sneaker movie... immediately after one for an animated adaptation of the life of Christ. Bit of a contrast there.
Seen it, and I quite like it. Might go again!

No, they've got it back on the market now. Remember that laws, particularly tax laws, are for the benefit of the oligarchs and the milking of the peasants. WB can have it both ways.

So what you're saying is that there's still a chance for Megas XLR?

Coyote vs. ACME is all I'm hoping for right now!
Went to see it yesterday. Would've seen it premiere day, but they changed it from February 28th to March 14th without me realizing it. Glad I caught it when I did.
And speaking of soulless cash grabs: Disney's Coco is getting a sequel. (:
I'd have seriously considered it... except that as far as I can tell, it has had precisely zero cinema showings here in the UK. No distributor at all for us. Hey ho.

Aw, boooo! Damn you, Warner Bros!
Well, maybe they’ll still show it internationally. If so, overseas box office might help make it a success. Sorry it’s not over there, at least for now, though.
