Official Shrek 5 Teaser · 6:09pm February 27th
Hello everyone I hope your having a good day so far, the title is not clickbait or fake, just today we have just gotten our first look at Shrek 5 with a hint of the cast, and what things are looking to be like for the movie, and before I say anything, I think it's best we look at the teaser to get an idea of what to expect. This teaser belongs to Universal and Dreamworks, and all rights belong to them.
Okay.. so.. yeah, let's talk about this for a bit, on the one hand, while I do think it looks interesting in some ways with aging Shrek's kids up to be teenagers, and from the looks of it, the film may be about Shrek letting his kids go do their own thing, and have them grow up if that really is the plot of the movie, but that's just my assumption just from this teaser alone, but let's talk about what else I want to say about this.
Already from this first teaser.. I am extremely worried about the direction this movie is gonna take, even if it's for just this teaser, if they lean too much into streaming and influencer jokes for this movie that might mainly come from Shrek's kids, I am not really looking forward to that, those kinds of jokes do not work for me, and in the context of the Shrek universe, I feel like it could make sense with either growing technology, but also mixing it in with magic and stuff like that, but if this is actually something the movie is gonna have, I'm extremely worried if they'll lean too much into it.
While Shrek has often been great at making jokes that reference pop culture( Aside from in the 3rd movie), I feel like now adays those might not hit as hard as they did back then for Shrek 5, while not every joke obviously is gonna involve them, it only depends on how their executed that will determine whether they work or not, and I only hope that the entire movie doesn't involve jokes like what we saw with the mirror here.
But now onto some of my other concerns, I.. really don't feel right with the look of this movie, like the animation itself looks really good like we should expect, but something about the character designs and detail rubs me the wrong way, Donkey especially looks a bit too uncanny for me, and I can only imagine how weird things are gonna look like if we see his kids aged up too, just the very thought of it gives my spine a chill. I only hope that if we see the other Shrek characters and Shrek's other kids, they at least don't look too jarring when we do, because I don't really feel right about this at the moment.
I'd rather not say anything about the cast, while I'm glad Mike Myers and the rest of the cast are coming back, any new people joining the cast for Shrek's kids and Zendaya I won't complain about yet, because as long as they do a good job when the movie comes out, that'll be alright for me. But if not, I'll go more into detail about it if I ever make a review of this movie.
But let's go onto my biggest hopes for this now, I.. really hope this movie doesn't make Shrek Forever After's conclusion feel forgotten about, and they regress Shrek's character after he happily accepted and grew to appreciate his family and friends at the end of the movie, it was an extremely emotionally satisfying ending to the franchise to me, and I don't think that I and many people will like it if this movie undercuts it completely for drama that feels forced for Shrek's character at this point.
If Shrek becomes more of a secondary character with his kids in the lead, I won't mind it as long as it doesn't ruin what he went through in the last movie, even if it's been a long time in universe for him, I just don't want to see the lessons they supposedly learned be ruined, that's one of the worst things a movie sequel can do.
And that goes the same for Puss in Boots, I think we can all agree that Puss in Boots 2 was just.. amazing despite how low some expectations of it were, but that movie ended up becoming one of my personal favorite Dreamworks movies ever, and the emotional growth Puss went through about valuing his 1 life and the friends he made during it was something truly special.
And I really hope they don't make that feel completely ignored when he, Kitty and Perito come into the movie like The Last Wish had set up, and what worries me more about that is that pretty much no one who worked on Puss in Boots 2 will be working on this one( at least from what I currently know, if there are people working on it, feel free to let me know), and so the new people working on this who have or haven't seen The Last Wish might completely screw up how Puss and the cast was handled in that movie.
That's got to be one of the biggest mistakes this movie could make, like I know this movie has been in production for a VERY long time, but not adding in people who worked on such a masterpiece like Puss in Boots 2 to help with this movie is extremely baffling to me given how much people loved that movie.
I know it means it would've taken longer for it to come out if it went through another rewrite, but as long as it helps make the movie better in some way, I don't mind waiting an extra 2 years or so. I do really hope that the people working on this make this a good movie at the end of the day, but given how disappointing and unnecessary Kung Fu Panda 4 was and felt for me, as well as what this first teaser showed, I'm extremely worried.
I really hope we don't have another Transformers One situation with this movie, because if it ends up being good or even great, it may be undercut by awful marketing that ruin people's expectations and perceptions of the movie, I do not want that to happen to Shrek 5, I really don't. I do hope this movie turns out good when it releases, but this is starting to feel like another unnecessary sequel to a story that was concluded over a decade ago.
I hope that what I've said here hasn't upset anyone, I'm just personally really worried with how this teaser looks. While we still have a very long wait for Shrek 5, and this movie could change over time, or be far better then we think when it releases, I'm just very worried for how the movie will turn out, While I am excited to see Shrek return again soon, I only hope that this movie doesn't regress what we've seen in the previous movies.

That's basically what this teaser shows with one of them being a teen and voiced by Zendaya, and the rest of them likely will too. We're a long ways away from Shrek 5, but as long as it's good, and doesn't regress what Shrek and Puss in Boots went through, it'll be alright for me.

If you've seen Puss in Boots the Last Wish, the ending set up that they will be coming into the movie at some point, but given that no one who worked on that movie is coming over for this one, it's only made me far more worried about how their gonna be represented or treated since no one who worked that movie will be there to help with Puss, Kitty and Perito's characters, they may just get sidelined or feel forced in for the sake of it, and coming off of an amazing movie like The Last Wish, i can see that will cause a lot of drama to people who were blown away by that movie, and expected a lot more of this movie because of what's only recently come out. If they do, I only hope they aren't ruined or regressed because none of the cast from that movie is working on this one.

That's another complaint I have about the movie honestly, I think we should've at least expected that the animation would look almost the same as the Last Wish since not only was it cheaper to work on, but ended up looking extremely stylized and made the movie just the more appealing animation wise, if this movie just looks like the older movies but with more detail, I can already see a lot of drama that will come from people who loved The Last Wish, even if this movie was in production for a very long time, not trying to adapt to the new style Puss in Boots 2 had just feels like one of the reasons this movie will feel like it's playing it safe and not trying to take proper risks.

I've been watching for this since starting right now, I can't wait for that movie to come out. 🙂😏
Luckily, the film isn’t expected until next year. That being said, the new visual style and look for the characters is the main thing I’m not particularly fond of, and I’m hoping that Dreamworks will take advantage of the one year wait by fixing the animation up. Even overhaul it, if necessary.

Me too, because if they listen to the fan reception of this teaser and try to make it more like Puss in Boots 2, I think that would clear up a lot of these issues, while people say they look as bad as the Ugly Sonic design.. it's not NEARLY as bad as you ask me, it still looks like Shrek at the end of the day, just a bit more expressive and maybe a bit too detailed, I don't think people demanding for a full on redesign is a good call, this movies been in the works for long enough as it is, and while this is just a teaser, the movie itself could look like The Last Wish when it releases with the time they have.
I just hope this movie is good and feels like a proper follow up to Shrek 4, because if not, we may just get another disappointment that may get overshadows by Toy Story 5, Frozen 3, Minions 3, and The Mario Bros Movie 2, and even Ice age 6 of all things when it releases in 2026, it's gonna be a big year for animated movies, so Shrek 5 is gonna have a lot on it's shoulders as the release gets closer, I'll probably get used to it the more we see what this movies about.
Because Shrek is over 20 years old at this point, and it makes sense to change up the visuals nearly 15 years after the last movie, even if it looks rough now, with the time they have, I just hope they make the movie look more appealing to people as well as being a good movie and sequel, we've seen what a bad movie like Shrek 3 looks like, and i don't want this to be even more hated then that after this movies very long production. The only thing we can do is hope for the best when we see more of this, while I am a bit excited for it, I am a bit worried still with what we've gotten so far.
