Thoughts on The Fantastic Four: First Steps · 5:48am February 25th
Yeah, I know I'm late to this discussion, but whatcha gonna do. All the same, the trailer's out, we got the movie coming up, and I'd like to share my thoughts in regard to it and to the full film when it comes in July:
- I really, really like the vintage aesthetic here. The designs for the world and the technology, the FF's costumes, HERBIE... it all looks great.
- I may need a bit of adjustment to get used to Reed and Ben in some ways (I normally "hear" Ben with a much deeper, gravelly voice for one, and the idea of Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards is a definite departure from what I would expect for Mr. Fantastic) but still, they really nailed the look of The Thing in this promo, and I'm willing to give benefit of the doubt where it comes to Reed.
- The effects of Sue's invisibility powers look (pun fully intended) fantastic; I really was impressed by that.
- I already knew that they were going to be using Galactus in this movie, but it still pleased me immensely to see that iconic helmet overlooking the Statue of Liberty and not the stupid space-cloud from the Tim Story movies.
- I am so, so, so glad that we're not getting Doctor Doom yet again for this one. That alone makes me hopeful that this one will succeed where the previous adaptations slipped up.
- I'll admit that the story content of this was very light, and while it might be easy to roll my eyes at the "family" line... all the same, I can accept it. Because at the heart of it all, the Fantastic Four ARE a family. They're the First Family of the Marvel Universe, and in that regard, it's honestly very fitting.
I for one am looking forward to this film, especially in light of the next Avengers movie.
I think Reed and the family will be the common thread this time around and we'll find out he's the only help we have against Doom. (Avengers:Doomsday being the final film of the arc)
Can't wait :D
I haven't engaged with the Fantastic Four all that much, but the trailer's made me curious, both about the movie itself and about the F4 in general. Honestly a good sign in my book.
I am so damn excited for it. It's about damn time we got a fresh start for this family.

You and me both. I'm really hopeful that this movie will be good, and I really hope that - after a host of previous attempts - we finally get a worthy big-screen adaptation of Doctor Doom.
Though frankly, first and foremost, I'd just be happy having a good Fantastic Four movie that's not The Incredibles.

Huh. That's an interesting thought there. I can see it all right!

Yeah, I'd definitely say it's a good sign as well.

Agreed. About damn time for sure!
Let's just hope that they stick the landing.
I'm curious as to if they are a part of the MCU. The aesthetic just makes it feel so different.

It really is a very different vibe, huh? I'm guessing that the FF are from another Earth in the multiverse, but I'm still wondering just what'll happen down the road with how this FF will cross paths with the "main" Earth of the MCU. It's anybody's guess until the movie(s) are in theaters, after all!
