More Updates! · 5:04am February 13th
Hey gang!
Figured I'd do more updates while I'm snowed in. Again.
So we're chugging along through the short story at present--No Need For A Fairy Godmother is currently about 40k words and counting, lol, but we're super happy with it. Therapy Sessions and The Great Swimsuit Caper will be much shorter--Therapy Sessions I expect to be less than 10k, and the Swimsuit one under 20k. Both of those are outlined, and will be written once I'm done with the first one. Then it'll be on to tackling things like Everfree.
I should probably mention that I've discovered that writing Rubicon has skewed my perception of "short", hahah.
And now, for your pleasure, please enjoy a few out of context excerpts from the work in progress!
Velvet stroked her daughter’s hair soothingly. “Alright, girls. Enjoy your ice cream, and try to rest.” She slipped put of the room just as she’d left, but paused to listen from the hallway.
After a minute, her daughter began talking. “…I’m sorry I keep waking you, Sunny…”
“Nerd, its fine—I keep doing the same to you.” A pause and then in a small voice, Sunset asked, “This is real, right? I’m not still there?”
“Its real. I told off whatever made a copy of my brother and it told is that it had seen all it needed to, remember? Then you broke the door down and made the shadows stop suffocating me.” Twilight let out a strained giggle. “You were like some untamed, wild gargoyle…”
Carefully, Velvet tiptoed back down the stairs, still worried and unsure of how to help, but determined to do what she could.
She chuckled, and looked at the redheaded girl whose gaze was following Twilight over her coffee cup. “I cant believe you’ve convinced Twilight to expand her horizons so thoroughly, Sunset,” she joked, trying to inject a little humor into the morning.
“Hey! I dont mind trying new things if they taste ok and arent…you know…slimy.” Despite her protest, her daughter was smiling—a good sign.
Sunset snorted. “Thats because your species has put vegetables in a very narrow space for what to do with them, in favor of dead flesh. Which is funny for a species whose first reaction to anything organic is ‘I wonder if I can eat that?’ Usually as theyre putting it in their mouth.”
Twilight set her orange juice on the table with a light sound and a giggle. “We put the omni in omnivore.”
Blue-green eyes squinted at her, and Sunset shook her head with a chuckle. “I’m not sure if that even counts as a joke or not,” she stated with an eye roll.
“I got a whole 6 hours of sleep last night,” she retorted. “Its put me in a silly mood.”
At least until they heard Sunset come out of the bathroom, at which point Twilight had started to ask a question…only to stop, go strangely silent for a long few seconds, and then burst into laughter.
“Yeah, I suppose the joke makes more sense now, right?” Sunset laughed.
That made the mother turn to see what joke had amused her daughter so. Sunset was dressed in a pair of loose, well worn sweatpants, and a black t-shirt.
A black t-shirt bearing a rainbow flag and the silhouette of a unicorn with the caption “Proud Unicorn,” on it. She blinked at it a moment, then stifled her own laughter. “Oh my…where on earth did you get that shirt?” Velvet chuckled. “Its…extremely on the nose.”
“That’s why I got it,” the girl responded. “We got them when we went out for the day with Glamour and Wild Song—there was this…big festival at the beach, and one of the shops was selling shirts.” Her eyes glanced down at her shirt. “I couldnt explain the joke at the time, and I have no idea what it actually means to humans, but I couldnt find a more perfect shirt if I tried.”
Twilight meanwhile, had gone even more wide-eyed and red-faced. “…and you let me get—Sunny!” she squeaked.
The look Sunset sent her daughter was amused, but beneath the surface of humor, it smoldered, the repressed intensity she caught a glimpse of surprising Velvet. As she turned away to give them something resembling a bit of privacy, she could see Sunset lean in to murmur something that the older woman was glad she couldnt make out. What ever it was turned into another squeak and what sounded like a painfully tight hug.
So yeah, enjoy some excerpts, and know we're working on the next bit steadily! :}
Hugs and cocoa!
The Rubicon Team
awwwe we love mom velvet <333
I'm going to climb through this internet connection and into your files to read that. I am fucking stoked!
What nice shorts, will Sunset show you her image of what she is like as a unicorn?
That doubt's definitely going to be eating at her for a long time coming. After those trials, of course she's gonna get a really sketchy sense of reality.
That rainbow unicorn shirt is 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Loved all of these excerpts, sooooooo hype for all these upcoming fics. This one being from Velvet's POV guarantees I'm gonna cry at least once lol. The mother daughter bonding between her and Sunset were some of the most affecting parts of Choices for me.
Y'all are killing it, as always.
Heh. I forgot about the t-shirts. "I ride unicorns."
Everything the soul needs in a good story.
Celestia's beard, I'm so excited!

I second that!
Those t-shirts are very funny "proud unicorn" I'm a proud unicorn! Jaja
Oh the shirts. Wonder if Twilight will ever cave and show hers to her mom. Cady will love it for sure.
Also can't wait for the girls to officially meet Twilight. Poor Pinkie is ready to pop.
