Admiral Biscuit

Virtually invisible to PaulAsaran

  • TThe Soup Must Flow
Running across Equestria, a vast network of pipes transfers soup from the mines out West to hungry ponies on the East Coast. Few ponies sitting down to a bowl of fresh cazuela ever think about the soup pipeline.

    March Music Monday 11

There's a long history of music being used for protest. When I was a kid, my parents had several Mitchell Trio albums (they probably still do), and just recently I was listening to the Mitchell Trio and thinking that some of those songs are still relevant. Sigh.

Alright, I'm gonna do something different this time around, and I've got reasons. Just be warned, plan to spend some time with this one; this won't be a quick listen.

One of the things about trying to put nature in boxes is that you wind up with edge cases like the platypus.

Which brings us to today's song.

    March Music Monday 8

Welcome back to March Music Monday! Once again, I've got a collection of songs that'll pique your interest in one way or another, and just like last year I'll be generous on how many Mondays there are in March (I think I have six lined up for this time around).

We're gonna start with the most pony one:

    MECHANIC: Complaints about tow trucks

Before I get started, there's a disambiguation and a bit of terminology. Tow trucks are also called wreckers in my part of the world, and they may have other slang in your part of the world. They're trucks that are meant to haul vehicles, usually disabled, from one location to another, such as off the road and to a shop.

Signal Boost: Soup Mining in Equestria · 3:11am February 3rd

THE SOUP MUST FLOW

Naming a 'verse after just one story would be presumptive, don't you think? And yet, the 'soupverse' has such a flow to it that it just feels right, and without checking comments on the original story, I'm fairly confident at least one reader labeled it as such.

Well, now there are two different stories by two different authors, and the Soupverse is official.

For those of you who haven't read The Soup Must Flow by yours truly, the story is set in a pumping station that moves soup through pipelines, soup that comes from mines out west. While that story touched on pumping stations and tank farms, it only gave passing mention to the soup mines.

I feel confident in stating that here, on a site devoted to fanfiction, many of us writers are focused on things that they didn't show us in canon, or things that they implied in canon but never really explained all that much. The implications of a particular spell, or what-ifs, or anything that kind of got glossed over in the original work.

Emil decided to write a story about the soup mines.

The first paragraph contains both the words 'soup faucets' and 'soup springs,' and I honestly don't think I can outdo that with any recommendation I write for the story. 'Soupfield' comes up shortly after, if there was any doubt with what you're getting yourself into.

Let's admit it, y'all wanted to know more about the soupverse, and Emil delivers. A story, chapter notes in blog form (you know I love those), and references to some of my other characters from other stories is the garnish on top of this fantastic Soupverse story.

In fact, the only thing I really have to ask is why aren't you reading it right now? Go and read it.

ESoup Mining in Equestria
A spiritual sequel/expansion to Admiral Biscuit's brilliantly odd The Soup Must Flow, wherein Equestria contains soup mines from which soup can be pumped like crude oil.

While it isn't entirely germane to the blog post, I'll add here that Emil asked me some time ago for permission to write the story (which I granted) and we exchanged a few messages some years ago about it, and then it was radio-silence until they said that it was complete. I also found out that one of my normal pre-readers had pre-read this and never told me about it, so well played in that regard.

I could have gotten a cheeky preview of it, but chose to wait until it was published, so I'm seeing it for the first time just like y'all are

Also (because I'm literally reading through the story right now) 'soupbrick' for dried-up concentrated soup in a played-out mine is a brilliant term and I'm gonna steal it next time I need ponies referring to bullion. Also, for all the authors out there, if you want to write a fanfic of one of my fanfics—Soupverse or otherwise—you have my blessing.

I'm going to have to read it later. But I can't wait.

Thanks for the signal boost! It's not actually complete, though I have several entries more to post now that I've gotten through the approval queue. Chapter 4 and Interlude 1 (lunchtime!) should be going up tomorrow and the day after.

My hope is that readers will learn something new with each chapter and set of story notes!

The only thing one could hope for at this point is a third author writing Soup Miner's Filly.

...why aren't you reading it right now?

'Cause it's not finished yet. Perhaps when it is...

Reminds me of the game "Armed and Dangerous", where the evil king has people slaving away in the onion mines of Midden.

And of course, Terry Pratchett had a similar premise regarding the lard mines of Überwald.

And the chocolate mines from Cookie Clicker.

Haha.
I never expected this writeup for that story !

Good stuff, as always Admiral :ajsmug:

The soup must flow.

Yes, but what about the soup confabulator? :applejackunsure: That's what I want to know about!

Cookie Clicker is the team's accountant. She's already made a non-speaking appearance, but she'll show up with a bigger role a little later on, during dinnertime.

Wasn't my place to say anything. :raritywink:
