Well, I didn't manage to go cold turkey on the anime, but at least this is me slowing down quite a bit · 10:34am January 18th
From Bureaucrat to Villainess: Dad's Been Reincarnated!
What’s it about? A middle-aged man finds himself in an otome game his daughter played. He’s an old otaku himself, though, and is genre-savvy.
Something I didn't get from the manga, it is kind of funny how the girl's internal monologue is a middle aged man, sort of reminds me of that meme about a movie concept where a little girl thinks in the voice of Samuel L Jackson. Still, with the two voices, and a narrator too, it may sound a little cluttered. The animation isn’t too standout for the theme, but solid. It's silly, and knows it, but doesn't let that distract from having heart. I think some people will see yuri, however unjustified.
I'm Living with an Otaku NEET Kunoichi!?
What’s it about? A guy has demons after him, so a female ninja fights them in exchange for freeloading at his place.
The manga was pretty adorkable, if short, though I became concerned about hints of a harem. The anime makes the odd decision to split every episode in two, so you get two sets of credits per episode. I guess that feeds into how the manga had short chapters, but I really wish they would have just blended it. The plot feels like it's moving at lightspeed. Speaking of the plot, this is ecchi, though mostly skintight rather than skin. I feel like more than half the animation budget was spent on her latex suit. Like, it's actually a plot point that someone recognizes her because of her ass. I watched one (two?) episodes and called it quits.
Babanbabanban Vampire
What’s it about? A 450-year-old vampire has a crush on a 15-year-old boy, but has manners and stuff and is waiting until he becomes an adult to drink his blood. However, the boy has recently found out about girls, and so the vampire resolves to cockblock him for the next three years to ensure he stays a virgin until it's time to eat him.
Yeah, I knew from the description alone I wasn't going to like this, but I watched half an episode anyway. The style feels 00's. If I have anything good to say, it's got decent animation despite the obvious low budget.
And now down into the manga.
List organized in rough order of my most to least favorite.
Below are those manga that I recommend.
A Ninja and an Assassin Living Together
A ninja running away from home meets an assassin and both of them realize they have complimentary skills.
Some bloodshed, but generally upbeat comedy. Kind of peripherally yuri. Coming as an anime next season.
The weirdo one desk over keeps giving me THAT kind of look
An equal rights romcom where a girl shows a boy she can be just a perverted as him, and he can be just as tsundere as the best.
Short chapters. I don't know if it'll develop actual romance, but the flirting is okay.
A Safe Place to Live
Two rebellious girls live in a town inside a bunker.
Fallout vibes. Definitely an interesting setup, though there aren't many pages yet.
Thank you for the venom
A vampire is reawakened after a long hibernation, and continues her search for revenge in the distant future of Victorian England, much to the chagrin of the pair of dandies that accidentally let her loose.
It's only been running since December, so there aren't many chapters yet, but I'm looking forward to more.
Below are those manga that I conditionally recommend.
Kissing Lilies
Girlfriends working up to being physical for the first time.
One shot. A little racy, but not ecchi. I guess nothing wrong with it, but I was hoping for some actual romance, rather than just making out.
Let's Hang Out When the Black Plague is Over!
A Japanese woman stumbles through a one way portal to medieval Europe. She can still get stuff sent to her from the modern world, but until she can figure out how to go home, she has a slice of life doing cultural exchanges with the locals.
Mostly the author being a history nerd and focusing on the positive points of 1300s Germany.
Yuri Yuri Panic: An Extremely Precious Affair has Begun
The typical "introvert gets proposed to by the hottest girl in school" with the twist that this time it's yuri.
School full of weirdos, protagonist and her imaginary friend included. Only two chapters in, already better than the author's other work, Our Maid Is Way Too Annoying, though given the reputation of that one, I remain suspicious.
Temerity
In the sci-fi future, a soldier gone rogue meets a fun-loving bounty hunter.
Great art, even though there were some production problems that necessitated changing artists. Chapters feel short. How short? Sixteen chapters in, the two leads have yet to actually meet.
I Turned off the Pain Perception Setting!
A woman hunting achievements in a VRMMORPG does the title, which really helps when both her and her character's health take a turn for the worse.
Good art. Plot didn't really grab me, but maybe that's just manhwa taking its time to get to the point.
My Roommate Is the Great Old Ones
Title is plot summary.
Page per chapter. Still early but seems to imply eventually yuri.
Re:Connect - A Matching App Where Time Crosses
A guy's girlfriend committs sucide. But then, he finds a different version of her on a magical dating app.
It's an interesting idea, but the presentation is a little flat.
Sukeban and Senpai
The delinquent school trope taken to the extreme where they have national fighting tournaments. In the middle of this, a baseball bat-wielding girl has a crush on a regular guy.
Slightly a harem. I've seen a little of this artist (from Spain, typically writes in English) before and the standard screwball comedy style is present. I guess this one just doesn't have enough of a hook for me.
Goth Lady and Lolita Boy
Two office workers crossdress on the weekends.
I've seen this plot at least twice before. This one seems shorter and more direct.
Her Face At The Witching Hour
A woman has been unsatisfied with her husband, and considers cheating with a ghost.
I decided not to stick around to see if she went through with it. By the creator of Beastars.
Below are those manga that I do not recommend.
The Strongest Vampire Princess Who Found and Adopted the Baby Saint in the Forest: I'll Even Destroy a Country for My Daughter!
Title is plot summary.
Little bit of a Mary Sue. Most of the plot is about her opponents being idiots.
Kuse 100
A selection of stereotypes in tsundere yuri manga.
Page per chapter. Nothing really has time to develop because it's someone different each time.
Today's featured artist is meikaa. 91% of what they draw is the same android schoolgirl who is embarrassed about not having torso skin.
Even if whatever you're talking about were to be seen as romantic, if the main character is involved it's still heterosexual by technicality!
Two of the manga accidentally use the same image, and I'm not entirely sure which one of them is the error.

Thanks, fixed
Of the four new starts I was enthusiastic about, Honey Lemon Soda and Medalist are living up to my expectations. Zenshu isn't anything like the MAL summary (which didn't mention it was an isekai nor tag it as one), but it's okay. Sakamoto Days is pretty good, but it remains to be seen if it'll be the same joke over and over.
I went way down into the maybes, but we still didn't overlap any. Tasokare Hotel has been pretty good, but it's inevitable to compare it to Death Parade, and it doesn't have a chance of being as good. Ameku M.D.: Doctor Detective is okay but lacks character development so far. Flower and Asura is an interesting concept, but it feels superficial, so I'm hoping it'll get some more depth. Momentary Lily isn't very good, and the two romcoms I tried are very average. Oddly, a summer movie I wanted to try showed up on WCO last week, but they put their movies behind a paywall, and it hasn't shown up on any of the other sites.

I read the manga for Sakamoto Days, and while I liked the silly action, my reaction was pretty much the same as SxF - why include the supernatural elements? Isn't enough going on?
I've heard Doctor Detective is a little like that Hugh Laurie live action show House.

I did liken Doctor Detective to House in another blog. Episode 3 was definitely along those lines, but the arc for the first two had her using her medical knowledge to solve a murder, so closer to Diagnosis Murder.
Ok I'm sorry this is unrelated, but I went to crunchyroll to watch an anime, and what the fuck have they done to the website??

Are you a subscriber? If so, then I haven’t used them in a while and probably don’t know what issues it has. If not and your complaint is you can’t watch anything for free there anymore, then yeah, that started a few years ago, and it sucks. I guess the model of nonsubscribers just getting stuff a week or two later might have proven to be a loss since I don’t know how many people are that obsessed with being absolutely current. But once a show is finished, especially if it’s years old? And all the stuff they acquired from Funimation seems to have disappeared altogether, not even available via subscription.
