Taking a Break · 11:41pm January 3rd
As I've alluded a few times over the past few weeks, I'm going on hiatus from anime, and honestly, probably taking a step back from the internet in general. I'm not going to call it exhaustion, but I feel like I need to do this before it gets to that point.
How long? Dunno. A couple months R&R sounds nice. We'll see.
That's not to say I won't be around, just don't expect weekly blogs.
Take your break man, definitely don't feel like you're obilgated to do anything.
Honestly, a lot of the world could do with less internet, imo.
You take care of yourself on your break, man.
I also feel like I'm getting burned out on anime, but not quite the same way. I still enjoy watching it. But a couple of years ago, I could watch something and have it immediately pop into my head which other ones I'd seen that had the same art style. Now I struggle to do that kind of thing because I've seen so much it's all running together.
Couple that with being jaded on certain things. Like any given romance. One character will get sick and the other comes by their house to bring homework, medicine, food, etc. And somehow the common cold frequently makes people faint. A lot of shows are hitting the same beats. And that's before even talking about the explosion of isekais the last few years that only differ by some minor tweak to the setup.
But even though I still enjoy watching as much, I was also disappointed by the offerings this season. For the winter, only 4 new starts were a definitive yes for me, whereas I'm often in double digits. I dipped pretty deep in the the "maybe" list this time just because I had the schedule space to, and mostly that's paid off with things that are pretty good, if not outstanding, but that includes two shows that even before I started them reeked of by-the-numbers romcoms.
Even as I look over the past year, I haven't had a lot of new shows I was that enthusiastic about. A number were borderline, so I bumped them up high enough to be features on my blog, but not many were clear-cut feature material. So I think there's something to the quality being down lately, or at least the originality being down, though it hasn't been bad enough to deter me. Yet. Thankfully, there's plenty of good older ones I haven't seen.
