    Hey, everyone!

So it's been since 2020 that I was last able to actually help co-host a contest. I've been a judge in a few since then, but for the most part I took a hiatus from the site. But now I'm back, and I thought to myself: What better way to come back than to host a fun competition? So that's exactly what I'm doing!

    Dialogue only contest!

Yahallo! The premise of this contest is very simple: dialogue only! Which means no prose, no descriptions, no ‘saidisms’, nothing like that. Otherwise, you may get as creative as you feel like! No limits on what the story content can be. Below are the rules. Please, if you have any inquires, ask me or one of the judges in a dm.

The contest will last from May 15th-June 15th, giving little over a month for writers to plan out and write out whatever they like! :D

Here is the group where fics should be submitted.

    1. Dialogue only.No descriptions, prose, saidisms, or paragraphs that are outside of someone speaking.
    2. The word limit, considering the unique case of this contest, will be 3.5k. However, if you want to do just 500 words (which is the minimum) and post the story(s) as an anthology, you are more than welcome too.

    May Pairings Contest

    Art by Mushroom!

It's once again May, and you know what that means: it's time to crackship!

What is the May Pairings Contest?

If you don’t know, the May Pairings contest is all about original, rare, or unique ships that aren’t afraid to explore unique dynamics between characters. This means that stories about Lyra and Bon Bon, Vinyl and Octavia, or Rarity and Twilight wouldn’t qualify. Rather, we want to see stories about Autumn Blaze and Lemon Hearts! Daring Do and Treehugger! Octavia and Applejack! You get the picture.

    Portal Transformations Contest I

Announcement and Rules (3 January 2024 to 7 March 2024)

The most up to date version of this contest's rules is at https://www.fimfiction.net/group/217156/portal-transformations/thread/529551/portal-transformations-contest-announcement-and-rules. Please ask your questions there.

    Welcome to the Contest

"When Spike goes through the Mirror Portal from Equestria to CHS, he turns into a dog. What does X turn into when X goes through the Mirror Portal (or a similar portal)? You can pick X and the direction."

Myself (Mockingbirb), I'm especially interested in changes that are less usual, not so commonplace (although I suppose very unsual treatments of the 'usual' changes can be interesting too.)

Competition » The "New Blood" contest: Second Edition · 2:06am June 27th

The "New Blood" contest: Second Edition.

This is where the magic happens…
This is where the magic grows...

Last year we had no idea how this contest would turn out. A contest that limits who can participate was a risky idea, never having been done before. But that didn’t stop it from being a blast for all involved, authors and judges alike. There were so many good entries from so many new authors that finally took a stab at publishing. All around, it was a great success and its goal was achieved. So, because it’s always more fun the second time, here we go again.

The prize pool, the base rules, the same spirit as last year - all of it is preserved. However, due to the inexorable march of time, and because we couldn't include so many authors whose accounts were just barely too old or too popular, we've extended the eligibility window. Keep an eye on these changes!

Once again, entries won't be confined to a specific set of characters, a genre, or any other narrow set of requirements. Instead, we will employ the system BWG is most known for: prompts.

There will be a single topic all writers must employ in some way. Additionally, there will be four known bonuses which the writers may attempt to fulfill. The best three stories will earn the three podium rewards. Furthermore, for each bonus, the best story (from those that did not place elsewhere) will earn a reward of its own. (See the "Prompt, bonuses, and rewards" section for more details.)

And what is "the best story"? Simply the most original and engaging one. The creativity of your take on the prompt will determine your success, combined with the quality of your technique and overall impact.

As far as the bonus goes, you will be judged for the quality of integration – that is, whether it’s tacked on or not – and the impact of the bonus compared to its absence. General story quality (as described above) will also play a role in the judgment, albeit a reduced one.

In the end, your writing will speak for itself – your notoriety and clout are meaningless.

Participation requirements

Here are some entry rules that must be followed in order to qualify:

  • No entries may be published before the official start of the contest (1st July 12:01 AM PDT) or after the cutoff (7th August 11:59 PM PDT). But you can start writing as soon as this announcement is posted.
  • Participant accounts must not have been created before 2019, as this contest is for newer members of the community. Participant accounts must also not have been created after this announcement was posted. This is to prevent older authors joining under an alternate account.
  • Participant accounts must not have ever reached 128 or more followers before the announcement of the contest.
  • All stories must state in their long description their involvement in this contest, with a link to the group.
  • All stories must be submitted to the group's contest folder. The ones from non-eligible participants must be added to an alternative folder created for them.
  • No alts, of any kind, created at any point in time.
  • Past and current members of BWG discord server may submit entries, as can any other writers excluded by the clauses above, and they will count towards the total number of participants. However, they will not be eligible for any prizes as stated above to avoid a potential conflict of interest, and they should be submitted in the non-eligible stories folder.
  • We are also making the decision to disqualify podium winners (first, second, and third place) of the previous contest. This is to better reflect the spirit of this contest. Past winners, you know who you are - feel free to submit a non-eligible story, or try your hands at other contests!

General rules

These are the general rules, which may experience changes and revisions during the course of the contest if the need arises (although we do not expect they will). The rules are as follows:

  1. Only one entry per participant.
  2. Only entries submitted during the contest period.
  3. If your entry is awaiting approval on the queue, you may notify the contest hosts as well as provide a password for the story in case it won't make it in time.
  4. Maximum length of the story is 4444 words. Anything longer will be considered a non-eligible story. Stories must be at least 1000 words as imposed by the site rules.
  5. Editors and proofreaders are allowed, including existing members of BWG.
  6. No usage of machine learning algorithms is allowed, for writing, editing, brainstorming, or anything else outside the scope of regular spellchecking tools.
  7. Collaboration and co-authorship is not allowed.
  8. Allowed settings are: G4, Equestria Girls, G5.
  9. OCs and AUs are allowed.
  10. Stories can have any rating.
  11. The following is not allowed:

    1. anon stories or self-inserts
    2. porn or fetish stories
    3. (explicit or not) incest, foalcon, non-con
    4. anthro
    5. crossovers
  12. Each story can only attempt to fulfill two bonuses. If your story is contesting for a bonus, you must mention which bonus it is in your story's long description. This does not include the secret bonus.
  13. One story can only win a single prize (podium, bonus, or secret bonus). If a story is eligible for multiple prizes, it will win the highest prize.
  14. Any prize may be exchanged for a "special prize" (see below). If the author does so, the monetary value of their original prize will be distributed equally among all other winners.
  15. Absolutely no alts are allowed, as this is not in the spirit of the contest.

The judge pool has been largely revamped from last year for a more fresh and diverse range of opinions. It will also remain secret until the contest results are out, so as to prevent participants from potentially playing the judges' tastes and biases. Rest assured there will be up to 7 or 8 secret judges involved in the judging process.

Note: A minimum of 4 judges is guaranteed, accounting for cancellations and dropouts.

This sounds fun, cant wait for the Fics their gonna submit

but where is the list?

Contest topic is: "The wrong pony for the job"

Idk if I can do that one, seems like you... got the wrong person for the job :trollestia:

Somepony could explain to me the concept of "Experiment with the form." and "Story told as a collection of works in-universe." please? I speak Spanish so as you might imagine, I can't understand the exact meaning.

So, I got just one question. I created my account ON 2019, not before, and not after. Am I still eligible to enter this contest?

Hola!

¡Espero haberte ayudado!

As a reminder to any onlookers, here's an excerpt from the FAQ:

But this topic/bonus is so confusing! How am I supposed to use it?

Prompts are just prompts, kernels of an idea. Bonuses can be interpreted loosely or literally, or anywhere in between. There isn't really anything disallowed by them. If you get a good idea for a story that is inspired by the prompt and obeys the posted rules, it will count.

The contest is about creativity, after all. We are not going to reject anything that follows the rules and has had thought put into it.

Basically, the topic and bonuses are entirely up to interpretation, and per tradition we don't have any additional explanations to offer for them.

Participant accounts must not have been created before 2019

You're good.

Wew, I’m just barely eligible. And I’ve already got an idea, now I just need the motivation…

Fluttershy believes in you.

If Fluttershy believes, I can do anything

You know, the bulk of the description of what this contest is seems to assume that the reader of this announcement is familiar with last year's contest.

Given that the contest is geared towards new users, that seems a very odd assumption to make.

Heck, I've been here for years, always read contest announcements that get posted, and I don't remember this particular one from last year.

Instead, we will employ the system BWG is most known for: prompts.

I also had no idea what "BWG" is.

Perhaps it would be helpful to link last year's announcement from this one so people can have more context?

The announcement is pretty much the same as last year's except the intro and some minor details that have changed since then. In any case here you have it, but dunno

>Are Fallout: Equestria, Equestria at War, Conversion Bureau, Displacement, etc. stories allowed?
>Any story that requires knowledge of some external setting or body of work other than the allowed MLP series will be considered Crossovers per the general rules, and therefore not allowed.

There goes my idea for a EaW fic. Oh well, I guess it’s partially still salvageable.

Since you seem to be the person who is answering questions in the chat (thank you for your service ) I was wondering if you could answer mine. Would a out of control discord and twilight count for one of the bonuses of a ship on crack? Reason I'm asking is because while this isn't a mainstream ship, it isn't unpopular either. However, the bonus seems to be written in a way that implies a crackship or just a ship that acts crazy like it's on crack in the story. If this could be clarified and if I could see if Twicord would count as an eliegle ships (or not because it is too popular) that would be great!

That's unfortunate! But yeah, taking inspiration is obviously allowed - every story ever has been guilty of that - we just don't want anyone to write a derivative story expecting the judges to have knowledge of some other property that they may not, in fact, be familiar with. That situation wouldn't be fair to the author or to the judges.

I've been thinking about your question all day, and I'll say this: most other contests on the site make it pretty clear what kind of stories they're looking for, and let anyone submit entries as long as the entry qualifies. This contest works the opposite way - we have made it clear what kind of authors we're looking for, and those authors may submit any kind of story they wish, as long as they are eligible.

I have stated in a previous comment that we don't have any additional explanations to offer for the prompt or bonuses, and personally I have no opinion on whether Twicord is a good fit. You sound like you're pretty set on writing that story - if that's the case, go for it! The results will speak for themselves.
