six days 'til my 8th year on fimfic. πŸ‘πŸ‘ · 6:55am Jun 5th, 2023

holy heck where'd the time go?

So. Come June 10th, I'll have been here on Fimfiction for a whole eight years. Possibly nine, if you count the time before I made my account and kept track of stories using only the favorites bar of Internet Explorer. I'm pretty sure I do in fact still have those favorited stories in my imported favorites on Chrome.

Almost eight years ago, I made the decision to join Fimfiction at first just to keep better track of stories I liked to read. A couple months later, I decided to "adapt" an original fiction piece I'd been working on, called Wielder of the Orb, to fanfic. At the time, I told myself that I would be doing that for practice. To improve my writing skill, and eventually publish Wielder of the Orb itself as its own original fiction novel. Or maybe take over my middle school play and cast myself as the main character.

Point is, I had zero plans to remain on fimfic for very long.

Boy, was I wrong.

Eight years and 79 stories (on this account) later, and I can confidently say that I'm still here. I'm far less active than before now as you've probably noticed, but I'm still here. Fimfiction's become my home for posting the things I write, even if they've especially been leaning toward original fiction these past several years. Pony-Me, which since 2017 had been practically my magnum opus of a story, has come and gone, and after its original release, two failed sequels, and a reboot that had drastically changed the direction of the story, it is now conclusively done and over. Splintershard, another "flagship"-tier story started in 2020 alongside the aforementioned reboot, is also near its own completion, albeit progressing at a leisurely rate.

And, to my own complete surprise, the twin stories of my Ruins saga had far surpassed any expectations I had set for myself.

Come Splintershard's completion, I plan to eventually return to Ruins with more updates.

I'll fully admit that my focus in writing on fimfic has dramatically slowed since I graduated high school and entered college. Much of my free time has instead been devoted instead to a split between making youtube videos on old tech, and working out the details of my Fractures project, which, like Wielder of the Orb long before it, is a fully original fiction story.

Once again, I'll reiterate however: I'm still here, and I'm not leaving the site. I'm just branching out and exploring new paths. Fractures is at the moment my primary writing focus, with What If and Splintershard following behind it, respectively.

In a sense, things have come full-circle, funnily enough.

Fractures itself can be dated back to at least 2021 if going by its underlying concepts of "characters are whisked away to another world and seek a way to return". It can be dated to as far back as 2014 if going by the fact that it is effectively the penultimate revision of Wielder of the Orb. (And yes, I'm fully aware that it's basically an isekai given the formulaic nature of its basis)

Anyway, yeah. Fractures is in its most basic form, a complete overhaul of that old story I tried to take over my 7th grade school play with. The entire cast of WotO makes a return in Fractures, albeit with shuffled roles, and though the titular "Orb" that the older story is no longer present, both stories still share the same basic formula--and for a time in Fractures' earlier phases of development, even shared the same power-hungry antagonist.

Since especially early 2022, Fractures has fully taken root as my current passion project. Starting initially as a reimagining of its older 2021 concepts that never made it beyond a single chapter of a not-even-named story, Fractures in its current iteration finally began to take shape. At first, it was more minor revisions, such as the swapping out of a teleportation parchment, a concept pre-dating Fractures as an idea for a platformer game I had years ago but left dormant, for a more fleshed-out "portal beacon".

That too, however, would not last long.

Throughout 2022 and into 2023, Fractures has undergone TREMENDOUS revision, from the removal entirely of the portal beacon to the stripping and replacement of the Splintershard-inspired magic system entirely, and an equally large overhaul of the characters to match. Zoey, a recurring character across my stories here on Fimfic and a character that's seen every era of my writing hobby, had gone from joke character to effectively a "chosen one" to a deeply traumatized child and back, ultimately landing in her current iteration as your bog-standard middle schooler who hangs out at a neighbor's house while her mother's busy at work.

And this time, I'm feeling confident that this is the revision of Fractures that can showcase my writing to the best of my ability.

So, for my 8th anniversary of joining Fimfiction, I'll be releasing the first chapter of Fractures. Yes, I know I'm doing something completely unrelated to Fimfiction to celebrate, though I'll go ahead and crosspost Fractures' first chapter into a blog post here. Writing a yearly trollfic for each year that passes has begun to grow tiring for me, and I've wanted for a long time now to truly push what I can do, rather than continuing on with the same old content of making a scream-filled fic or packaging up another original fiction concept in a pony-shaped box.

One last time as a TL;DR: I am NOT leaving Fimfiction. I'm just currently in a bit of a pit as far as my writing direction goes, and I've decided that the "serious" branch of my writing should instead be focused on a new passion project that I've had brewing for ages now. What If will continue to receive its randomly unscheduled chapter updates as usual, and in time, I still plan to work out Splintershard and other unfinished fics out to their conclusions.

Fractures, if things go smoothly, will be posted on Offprint on or around June 10th, and as mentioned previously, already is available as a pdf on my discord server in early-access for $5 patreon patrons. If things go awry, this same PDF will be made public on my discord as a stopgap solution. Worst case scenario is that I post on... *shudders* Wattpad.

and now that I think of it I do have a dormant Fractures sideblog on Tumblr.

Anyway yeah thanks for reading this long ramble instead of doing probably more important things. Maybe I'll post the first chapter of Fractures as a good ol' story pitch-style chapter in What If like I used to for random story ideas. Of which largely have been merged together to form Fractures in its current state. Yeah when I said things have come full-circle, I mean it. Fractures has pretty much been the result of my stockpiling of ideas on my user page for years.

Let me know in the comments if you'd like the first chapter of Fractures as a chapter of What If.

I mean, it doesn’t have to be Wattpad, you could also try Ao3, RoyalRoad, or Scribblehub
