Spring Cleaning - A Story Laid to Rest · 8:21pm Jun 4th, 2023
Well it's closer to summer now but whatever. As someone who very much craves closure for things, I wanted to start giving that same closure to others who may want it. I don't think this will come as much surprise to anyone, but there are certain fics in my backlog that need to be cancelled. Today, I lay to rest Four is Greater. If you don't know that fic or don't care about it, feel free to skip this blog :).
It was a... troubled fic. The plot is threadbare, characters are... not themselves, shall we say, and ultimately this decision comes down to me losing everything I had for this fic in the Great Harddrive Formatting. Written during a time when I was a teenager coming to grips with my own sexuality, as well as aping on other's fics that dealt with homophobia through the lense of colourful equines, I think it was both inevitable that I would attempt a fic like this, and also that it would end like this.
I know that I did, at one point, have plans for bringing things around. Obviously Twidash would happen. We'd have a flashback to Twilight as a filly coming out as bi to Celestia, and having a positive reaction from her and support. The story would be split between SPike's conversations with the the four while Twilight went looking for Rainbow. Spike would slowly bring them around, as he explored their upbringing that instilled their beliefs in them.
But in the end, the story doesn't work. The characters are far too wrong, and I made them go way too hard into it for a satisfying redemption to be possible the way I planned it.
So, that's it then. Four is Greater is cancelled. Though, one day, I'd like to revisit the topic. The world we live in today is... troubling for LGBTQ people. None more so than Transgender people just trying to live their lives. I'm fortunate to live in Canada where we haven't had as many problems as our southern sibling, but I also live in Alberta where we've just re-elected a party who's not exactly trans-positive.
I'd like to write a story that deals with these issues, on some level. I'd stick closer to home, though, as I myself am not trans and I don't really feel like it's my story to tell. I am plenty familiar with homophobia, though.
Ah, but this blog is becoming longer than it needs to be for a simple cancellation notice, so I'll leave it at that. Apologies to those who enjoyed the story for what it was, but it's time for it to rest in peace.
Until next time,
