A Whole Bunch of Chrisfics, Now Available in Spanish! · 1:30am Jan 24th, 2023
I've had several of my fanfics translated into various languages over the years, and that's always something that tickles me pink. A good translation is at least as much work as writing a good story from scratch, and tends not to get nearly the recognition; when someone enjoys something you wrote enough to put the kind of time and energy necessary to render it artfully into a second language, that's a labor of love.
But although I've had stories translated before, I've never had my oeuvre done up... until today. SPANIARD KIWI messaged me this afternoon to let me know that not only had he translated one of my fics, he'd translated seventeen of 'em. Seventeen! How did they miss translating your stories about wizards and pirates?
Spaniard Kiwi seems to be a really prolific translator. I've seen a lot of authors who've posted about him translating their work. He's even done a few of mine. Makes me wish I knew Spanish, so I could appreciate his work more directly.

Well, I guess the translations could all be awful and I'm too non-Spanish-speaking to notice... but I'm pretty sure not. In fact, there's a trick I was taught years ago to see if a translation is good (well, thoughtful) or not: check the puns. For example, there's a line in Going Up: "humans play horseshoes for fun, while ponies simply play shoes." Google translate tells me that Kiwi translated this as something along the lines of "humans play with horseshoes for fun, while ponies also use them as shoes," because the joke doesn't make sense when translated word-for-word.
In other words, I may not be able to tell exactly how the translation reads to a Spanish speaker... but I can definitely tell that it was a product of time, effort, and careful consideration. And knowing that fills me with warm fuzzies.
