Remember how the Germans in WW1 complained about shotguns being barbaric despite using nerve gas and flamethrowers? It's because they want to remove an effective weapon for them.
Gatekeeping establishes that certain groups are simply not welcome in the community. They can buy the products, but they'll never be welcome with other true fans. This limits their ability to infiltrate and destroy what people invested in the setting and hobby, care about.
Conspicuous consumption of product doesn't mean you appreciate what people love about the setting, it doesn't work that way. Without passion for what you claim to enjoy, and without actual care to see the community remain healthy, you will always be on the other side of the gate. Trying to say there is no gate, is fallacy. When you said "accusing them of being fake fans", Hmm that made me thought of the same people who uses women and other demographics to promote inclusivity. Are you sure they actually give a shit about they claim to champion or are they them using similar how the BLM organization is using the plight of black people to buy another mansion. Hence why we call them grifters. But by the time the people they claim to champion are turning against them and favour of the defending the setting and keep to it's identity, the mask falls off. They lose shit and show their real selves. Anyway I don't really give a shit about the genders and or sexes of space marines, my main issue is that a lot of the people on discord and reddit that got upset over FSMs were being extremely petulant, which makes them look bad. Kind oflike how Twitter people getting upset at Hogwarts legacy made them look bad, and the game look good. You're no better than the Twits telling me that my favorite vtuber is a transphobic racist.
I think we can both agree that the boycott Hogwarts Legacy people (at least those on Twitter) took a huge L, and probably made things worse.
