Cover Art and the Art of AI · 9:44pm Nov 20th, 2022

Cover art for an author is important—for an Indie, more so. Critical. It sells your book.

I downloaded DiffusionBee (an AI art program) and prompted it to generate 60s and 70s pulp paperback SF art. Things suddenly got bizarre. Yikes. I also wanted to test image-upload to Mastodon, so I created this test cover from one electronic fever dream.

What do you think?

Note that cover paintings often look like this. Rectangular. The front cover on the right, back cover on the left, with space left for the lettering. leaving lots of whitespace where it normally wouldn't be.

I'll do lettering on arrangement. I am @sfwrtr@eldritch.cafe, if you want to follow me there. FYI, the AI doesn't understand MLP ponies or show art styles as best I can figure out. Pony artists need not fear being replaced by an AI, yet.

I think it looks great. The horsey aspect of it is honestly charming, though if you find a way, I'd edit the facial features a bit. The muzzle has the nostril and mouth warp into one another and the eyes just look flat and off. You have to look real close to notice though.
