Let's see... yep. There's actually a fair number of stories like that. The main one that leaps to mind is the Divine Dungeon series.
I've always wanted to read something where the main character was similar to the Mothership from Homeworld. The closest is Legacy but that's a BOLO and was not originally a living person.
