The Day of the Dead Anthology

The Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) is a now-famous tradition from ancient times that has been a huge part of Mexican Culture through the centuries. Like so many things in Mexico, it's influenced strongly by certain aspects of the Aztec people.

It has shaped the way those of us with that heritage look at life and death in many ways, and most importantly on the remembrance of, and honoring the deceased. We traditionally decorate little altars dedicated to the memories of those that passed away… but it's not a somber occasion.

PSA: Using AIs to Write and Publish Stories in Fimfiction

Hello everyone, this is a PSA (Public Service Announcement, for those of ESL) to put to rest consistent questions about using AI to 'write' stories and publish them here. This is not intended as a poll or a request for feedback. It is exclusively a clarification on an already-existing rule.

People ask: "Can I, oh great and powerful D, post a story or chapter that I got ChatGPT to write for me?!"

And the answer, my friend, is... No.

Absolutely not. Not in a thousand years!

    Because you didn't write it.

It is not your creation. You are NOT the author. In fact, you are the opposite.

There seems to be some confusion when interpreting the following rule:

    Don’t Post (Content)

    Phishing Awareness

Have you ever found yourself in a situation like this?

And then you magically find yourself in a suspiciously familiar site, except that you're not logged in, and it requires you to do so?

Well. Don't log in. This is a scam, and a cheap one at that.

There've been recent attempts to obtain Fimfiction users’ personal data, like passwords and/or emails through links like the one I'm making fun of above. And a distressing amount of people don't seem to know what phishing attempts are.

If you HAVE entered a site like this and put in your data, make sure to follow these basic steps at least.

    Reunions: A Swapped Roles Contest!

Okay guys here's something fun presented by Nitro Indigo.

Presented by me, I guess, but I digress.

Last year, I (Nitro Indigo) noticed that there was a surprising lack of roleswap fanfics on this site. To fix that, I decided to run a roleswap contest over the summer themed around secrets. While it didn’t get many entries, it nevertheless attracted the attention of some big authors and was the origin of two of my favourite fics. Overall, I think it was a success, so I’ve decided to run another one!

    Minor Rules and Reporting Update

Hope everyone is enjoying the new year.

Some small changes have been made to our rules as well as to the reporting process.

    Rules

"No attacks directed at individuals or groups due to race, gender, gender identity, religion or sexual identity."

This better clarifies our previously ill-defined hate speech rule and includes groups as well as individual attacks.

"No celebration, glorification or encouragement of real life criminal activity."

This includes past, present and potential future crimes.

    Jinglemas 2019

There's truly no time like the holidays. What's better than copious amounts of food, quality time with family and friends, hearing the sweet sound of Trans-Siberian Orchestra on repeat, and unmanagble financial stress from our capitalist overlords?

    Gift exchanges of course!

Site Post » [Interview] JasonTheHuman's Anthropology · 1:48pm Dec 14th, 2012

Originally posted to the Vault on 11/16/12.

Lyra is almost as big in the fandom as Derpy, with a unique fan-created persona that is obsessed with humans. In what is (almost - it recently got beaten out by some little upstart) the most favorited story on FIMFiction, we learn why. (And have you guys heard the song? There's a great song.)

[Adventure][Human Crossover] • 130,400 words
Humans.

Truth or myth? Ancient lost civilization or just an old pony's tale?

No pony has ever seen one, and most haven't even heard of them. But Lyra knows that these wonderful creatures are more than just old legends, and she's going to find out... and possibly drive her roommate insane in the process.

Hit the break for a chat with JasonTheHuman, and links to Anthropology out on the ponynet. There are some pretty nice ebooks waiting for you over at the Vault's Downloads page, too!

FIMFictionPony Fiction ArchiveEquestria Daily

Where do you live?

Ohio.

What kind of work do you do? (i.e. are you a student, do you have a career/day job, etc)

I'm a journalism major in college.

How did you discover My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic? When did you realize you were a fan of the show?

My first experience with the fanbase was on one of the TF2 servers, back in May 2011. I thought it was awesome that people were actually having fun while playing a video game, so I definitely respected them. I didn't actually watch the show until a few months later, and then I really got involved in the show around August. I've always been a fan of quality animation, so there wasn't really any period of denial and I'm pretty open about liking the show.

Do you have a favorite episode?

"Lesson Zero" was great, since I like the more comedic episodes. I also liked "Cutie Mark Chronicles" for the character backstories, so it's a pretty close tie between those two.

Who is your favorite character based purely on the canon of the show itself? Would your answer change if you considered the fandom in its entirety (i.e. art, fanfiction, memes, etc)?

Twilight Sparkle is cutest, smartest, all-around best pony. I think I was drawn to her character design before I ever actually watched the show, but then I started to like her nerdy and socially-awkward personality. As far as fanon goes, though, it's obviously Lyra. It's interesting that for a long time I really didn't care about background characters. When the first Lyra blindbag came out and there was the huge argument about her name being "Heartstrings," I didn't care at all and didn't see why it was such a big deal. I think I've come to realize how much potential there is for her human obsession, though. I like it best when she's pointing out inconsistencies in the show, like Pinkie's foam finger, or parodying the brony fandom and our obsession with/desire to become ponies.

How did you come up with your handle/penname?

My real name is Jason and I'm a human. Since I created my FiMFiction account in order to post Anthropology, I thought I'd make humans a part of my username. Some people wondered if it has anything to do with Adventure Time, but I actually don't watch that show.

Have you written in other capacities (other fandoms, professionally, etc)? When did you first start writing?

Before Anthropology, my claim to Internet fame was Gurren Jesus, a crossover of my favorite giant-mecha anime, the Bible, and World War II. That ended up resurfacing in the April Fool's chapter of Anthropology, by the way. I didn't do any serious fiction writing until Anthropology. I actually think that discovering how much I enjoyed writing is what made me switch my major to Journalism.

What do you like to do when you're not writing?

Video games and reading. It's not a creative answer. I've tried a little bit of customization work on blind bag ponies and brushables, but I'm not good enough at it to sell them.

Who is your favorite author (published or fanfiction)? Do you have a favorite story or novel?

Stephen King is my favorite author, and The Stand is his best work in my opinion. It's hard to make a story stay that good for over 1000 pages.

Stephen King believes that every author has an "ideal reader" - the one person who they write for, the one person whose reactions they care about. Do you have one, and if so, who is it?

I try to write things that are close to the show canon, so I like readers who are just looking for a fun character-driven story. I've had a few people say that they liked my story even though they typically never read fanfiction, and that means a lot to me since I don't typically read fanfiction either.

Do you have any tips for aspiring writers, or writers who are struggling with their own stories?

Read a lot. I read tons of novels in all sorts of different genres. You'll learn how to tell a story from reading them, whether they're good or bad. It's also worth studying the actual writing process. Stephen King has an excellent book called On Writing that covers everything from basic grammar to character development. I've also found a lot of good writing tips from professional authors or editors on StumbleUpon by choosing the "writing" category and browsing for a bit, even though the Internet is the worst thing to happen to productivity ever.

What is your typical writing process? (Do you work through multiple drafts, do you have any prereaders/editors, etc?)

It's very unorganized. I'll write scenes out of order as they come to me. I'll get through maybe 400-800 words in one sitting when I'm inspired. I might need a break to get past one line of dialogue or piece of description to move a scene forward, so I might skip chunks of story and just plan to fill it in later. Once I've got a chapter mostly completed, I'll read through it a few times and make small edits and fill in the blank spaces. I've gotten good at self-editing, but I should really find editors more often.

What inspired you to write Anthropology?

I'd started to see some Lyra comics and memes all over the place, and I thought that her interest in humans had good story potential. I checked a few fanfiction websites for Lyra stories, but I couldn't find many and I didn't like the ones that I got. Originally I was just going to do a one-shot trollfic, which would be written "as" Lyra, with all of the terrible Mary Sue and Human in Equestria cliches (except with Lyra going to Earth and making friends with all the humans). Then it turned into a more serious story, and I planned everything out and started writing.

Did you run into any tough spots or challenges when writing Anthropology?

I made the mistake of saying I would release a chapter every week. Somehow I did it, and I'm not sure how. There's definitely a reason why I didn't want to write anything else for several months afterwards. I had the intention of staying at least five chapters ahead of what I was releasing, which I managed to do for a while. By the end I usually had maybe the next two chapters started when a new one went up.

When you set out to write Anthropology, did you have any specific messages or themes in mind?

I pretty much just wanted to develop Lyra as a character, and have a human-centric story that avoided a lot of the cliches of humans being portrayed as either super-special or complete monsters in My Little Pony fics. Aside from that, it's still just a My Little Pony fanfiction, so I didn't have any grand messages in mind. It's just to have some fun and play with the characters.

Where can readers drop you a line?

I'm on FiMFiction often and read all my messages. I'm also on the Ohio Bronies forums occasionally.

Is there anything else you'd like to add?

To answer everyone's question, I don't have any plans for an Anthropology sequel at the moment, but I do want to continue writing stories about Lyra and Bon-Bon. I like the personalities I gave them and want to explore the possibilities there. I might attempt another long story at some point, but I don't know. Whatever happens, keep an eye out for me on FiMFiction.

Really enjoyed this story. Rather well done overall.

However...

Aside from that, it's still just a My Little Pony fanfiction, so I didn't have any grand messages in mind.

It's fine to not have any grand messages in mind. But to give your reason as, "It's just My Little Pony"? Well, sir, MLP happens to have a grand message in mind, namely the magic of friendship. So, uh, it makes perfect sense to have a grand message in mind. Because you make it sound like makes no sense.

i likw Jason's view on ..alot of stuff. anyways now i'll have to add anthropology to my 62 current read laters. sorry jason i'll get to it when i can

Well it's about dang time they interviewed this brilliant S.o.B.

You have trampled upon my hopes with your lack of following stories, but Anthropology was one of the highlights of my week when it updated. Thanks for all the memories, and I hope you change your mind soon.

Then that moment when I read The Stand shortly before starting Anthropology. Great interview; very interesting.

It's very unorganized. I'll write scenes out of order as they come to me. I'll get through maybe 400-800 words in one sitting when I'm inspired. Exactly like me :derpytongue2:

How could someone who says Stephen King is their favorite author not understand his application of the phrase 'ideal reader'? It bugs me every time these interviews are posted because no one understands the question. :ajbemused: READ 'ON WRITING', PEOPLE!

Edit: wait - he says in the interview that he's read 'On Writing'. SO HOW COULD YOU NOT UNDERSTAND THIS QUESTION?!

At first I felt badly that I obviously did a poor job paraphrasing what King took a page or two to explain because no one got it, but I've finally decided that I think it's interesting in its own right as a sort of Rorschach ink blot test - it's interesting to see how each author interprets the question.

But more people should definitely read On Writing regardless.

I was surprised and glad to see that I have pretty much the exact same writing process as this guy. Good interview, thanks for posting

Each time one of these interviews come on, I imagine myself as being interviewed. Not that it will happen since my fic is not popular, but I can dream...

610951
Nothing wrong with dreaming, as long as you keep trying to achieve those dreams.

I should work for Hallmarks.

Lol I write out of order too

It's good to see this got an interview, this as the first long story I ever read, and was probably what caused this site to dominate my life. Bravo, my man, bravo.

Glad that someone really popular has the same process as me.

One of my favorite fanfics of all time. This, of Project: Sunflower.

It's very unorganized. I'll write scenes out of order as they come to me. I'll get through maybe 400-800 words in one sitting when I'm inspired. Pretty much a more organized version of how I write. I've been coming up with an idea for a story, and the way things have been going, it's being written almost completely backwards, aside from a very rough draft of the very first chapter.

I write maybe like... 1000 words and then abandon the story. I think I need to get writing :applecry:

I tend to just think out the plot, characterizations, character development and personalitys for DAYS before I put anything down on paper. I'm an unorganized person, my head is better than paper. But what I really focus on before I write is character development. Sometimes I just come up with random challenges and what the characters would solve it.

Eventually, the plot, the characters and setting start forming, and then I write from the beginning. I don't like jumping around, writing chunks that come to me. Writing for me is as much of an adventure as it is for the readers.

Wow! Introduced to MLP's fandom through TF2! Fighting is truly magic.

610903
Catchy.

613319
Very very much so.

610052

It's definitely fine to have some sort of a message involved, and preferably there is some kind of point to a story when you write it, but I don't think it needs to go too deep. I got a little annoyed with people while I was writing Anthropology who were overanalyzing it, expecting me to explain everything about human nature. Besides, it's a comedy.

610537

It's been a while since I read the book. Plus, I was at college when I did the interview and my copy was at home.

613095

I wish I could write in sequence. Right now I'm attempting a fic (it'll probably get released, but no promises) and I just can't figure out some plot devices. Characters and scenes are my favorite part, but I hate having to explain things.

Also, I made the cover image for "Discoveries, Shenanigans, and No Way Home." The picture of Lyra crudely photoshopped onto the Ancient Aliens guy. You're welcome!

613242

I remember that I was on that server the night before high school graduation, and ponies hit as soon as I was at college (literally the first day I decided to watch episode 2 instead of going to a pep rally). It's as if the universe (or Valve) was giving me a sign that this would become my life in a few months.

613369
Comedies can have a lot of depth, actually. And overanalyzing is actually a lot of fun. But I do agree on that point; badgering you about it is quite unnecessary.

Kind of cool how it interlocked cannon and fannon in a streamlined way. I think thats one of the main things that made it enjoyable for so many people, including myself. It also did a great job of developing a background pony, which was awesome.

Sometimes I write things backards. :pinkiecrazy:

Props on the serious dedication to writing though. Long projects are haaaard.

Ohio? That's the way to go!

"I've always been a fan of quality animation"

" but I actually don't watch [Adventure Time] "

Its a paradox!

I absolutely loved your story. I believe it was the second or third fic on this site I read. Pretty long beginning, but still one awesome piece of work. Keep on writing!

Greetings from a fellow Ohioan!
