Corollary, as this is a general rule of thumb, seeing as eight out of ten of self-inserts magically gain the favor and adulation of all the ponies within the first few chapters. Barring that, they gain magical powers that can only be justified as obtained from their rectum. Also the blind, whiny, self-pitying, asinine misanthropy that characterizes many of these self-inserts are annoying as hell. Most HIE fictions, sadly, tend to have not just one, but all three of these, which makes me a very sad pony.

Corollary, thumbsing a piece of fiction and making it a favorite because it has references kind of makes me mad. Not only because it's an extremely shitty way to write, it's also never believably incorporated. The vast majority of the writers who do this do it to please the fanbase and garner, frankly undeserved, attention. Stop that shit, please. Your story should be praised because it has noteworthy innovations, beautiful writing, artfully created heart pounding tension, a skillfully weaved complicated plot, and non-cardboard cut-out characters, specifically the lack of the last irritates the hell out of me. Having garbage pile up to the top of the ratings and into the featured box just because a bunch of people recognize a couple of over-used, tired memes in the story is fucking irritating. So stop it, stop it right now. I don't care how many fucks you don't give.
