This is my first blog post and I hope I am doing it right.

Anyway, I have an essay due soon, and I was wondering if anyone wanted to review it for any mistakes, if you find them please tell me.

Palm Oil

Palm oil is a dangerous substance to many things. Palm oil is the cause of the destruction of rain forests, it is endangering species, but it has health benefits when eaten. Palm oil has a negative effect on the environment. Everyone, including the young, should rise up against it and stop using products with palm oil.

Rain forests are getting destroyed by the continuous farming of palm oil. The demand of Palm oil is causing farmers to destroy rain forests for room to make plantations. Indonesia is a major producer of palm oil and the cutting down of rain forests is causing it to be a main CO2 emitter in the world. “In fact, deforestation causes eighty percent of Indonesia’s CO2 emissions, making the tropical nation the world’s third largest emitter of greenhouse gases.” (“Problem with Palm Oil Fact sheet”) Indonesia faces future problems with how many emissions it releases.

The dangers of palm oil aren't exclusive to the environment; it also threatens entire species and the humans living in the area. Animals are being pushed out of their natural habitats and into new areas, which they can’t adapt to fast enough to and eventually die. Even then, not even humans are immune to this, as their food and water sources are drying up they can’t find new places to live on. “A single palm oil plantation can destroy the forests, watersheds, and forest resources of thousands of Indonesians…” (“Problem with Palm Oil Fact sheet”) The production of palm oil in new countries is using forced labor to make people grow more of it.

Some people think that palm oil is good because it has health benefits and it seems useless to stop using it when it would make no impact on the companies making the products. This is wrong! Though palm oil has health benefits, the benefits are greatly reduced because almost all products with palm oil in it are over processed and they lose all of the effects they would have otherwise. Companies would be affected by somebody who stops using products with palm oil in it, if one person starts talking about it, and they talk to someone else, then eventually everyone will know about it. “…that these two tenacious young women have changed the face of the fight against palm oil forever…” (Girl Scouts and Palm Oil) These two young girls saw that something was wrong and tried to fix it, they peacefully made a change in the fight against palm oil.

Palm oil hurts everything around it, people need to push out palm oil from all products and stop buying palm oil. This plant is the cause for hundreds of thousands of trees getting destroyed every year. It hurts animals, it hurts people, and it even hurts the environment. Palm oil can and will hurt you if you let it. You can’t let this crime go unpunished you can’t make the suffering of thousands be equal to you washing your hair. Start now and find out some way you can help.
